      • Differences in the Amino Acid Sequences of CPD Photolyases of UV-sensitive and UV-resistant Rice Cultivars

        Teranishi, Mika,Hidema, Jun,Fujino, Takana,Hirouchi, Tokuhisa,Yamamoto, Kazuo,Kumagai, Tadashi Korean Society of Photoscience 2002 Journal of Photosciences Vol.9 No.2

There is a difference in the inhibitory effects to supplemental UVB (wavelengths 280 to 320 nm) among Japanese rice (Oryza sativa L.), the cultivar Norin I is less resistant while the cultivar Sasanishiki is resistant. UVB induces photodamage in DNA. Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD) is a major UV-induced DNA lesion. Photorepair, which is mediated by photolyase, is the major pathway in plants for repairing CPD. We have analyzed CPD induction and repair in Sasanishiki and its close relative Norin I using alkaline agarose gel electrophoresis. Norin I is deficient in CPD photoreactivation and excision, thus UV sensitivity correlates with deficient dimer repair [I]. The photorepair deficiency in Norin I results from a functionally altered photolyase with a photoflash analysis [2]. In this paper, we examined the UVB-sensitivity of several other UV-sensitive and -resistant cultivars and found that the CPD photolyase activity was deficient in UV-sensitive ones. It was also evident that there was a variation in the deduced amino acid sequences of CPD photolyases of the UV-sensitive and -resistant cultivars, whereas each deduced amino acid sequence of the UV-sensitive cultivars and of the UV-resistant ones was the same. These results suggest that the difference in the CPD photolyases of UV-sensitive and -resistant rice might be due to the structural alteration of CPD photolyase.

Progressive Change in Joint Degeneration in Patients with Knee or Hip Osteoarthritis Treated with Fentanyl in a Randomized Trial

        Tatsuya Fujii,Seiji Ohtori,Koshi Takana,Sumihisa Orita,Gen Inoue,Nobuyasu Ochiai,Kazuki Kuniyoshi,Yasuchika Aoki,Tetsuhiro Ishikawa,Masayuki Miyagi,Hiroto Kamoda,Miyako Suzuki,Yoshihiro Sakuma,Gou Kub 연세대학교의과대학 2014 Yonsei medical journal Vol.55 No.5

Purpose: Opioids improve pain from knee and hip osteoarthritis (OA) and decreasethe functional impairment of patients. However, there is a possibility that opioids induce analgesia and suppress the physiological pain of OA in patients, thereby inducing the progression of OA changes in these patients. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the possibility of progressive changes in OA among patients using opioids. Materials and Methods: Two hundred knee or hip OA patients were evaluated in the current prospective, randomized, active-controlledstudy. Patients were randomized 1:1:1 into three parallel treatment groups: loxoprofen, tramadol/acetaminophen, and transdermal fentanyl groups. Medicationwas administered for 12 weeks. Pain scores and progressive OA changes on X-ray films were evaluated. Results: Overall, pain relief was obtained by all three groups. Most patients did not show progressive OA changes; however, 3 patients in the transdermal fentanyl group showed progressive OA changes during the 12 weeks of treatment. These 3 patients used significantly higher doses than others in the transdermal fentanyl group. Additionally, the average pain score for these 3 patientswas significantly lower than the average pain score for the other patients in the transdermal fentanyl group. Conclusion: Fentanyl may induce progressive changes in knee or hip OA during a relatively short period, compared with oral Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs or tramadol.

Numerical Analysis of Thermal Flow Characteristics Inside Waste Combustion Chamber with Multiple Thermal Plasma Jets

        Hyeokjun Kang,Jeong-Hwan Oh,Daeun Choi,Hidemasa Takana,Sooseok Choi 한국진공학회(ASCT) 2021 Applied Science and Convergence Technology Vol.30 No.6

Presently, the use of bituminous coals as a heating source in the cement industry has led to an increase in carbon dioxide emissions. In this study, the thermal flow characteristics inside a waste combustion chamber constituting multiple thermal plasma jets was numerically analyzed. The waste combustion process was applied as a heating source to produce the raw materials of cement. The design and operation of the waste combustion process were optimized through numerical analysis using the magnetohydrodynamics and computational fluid dynamics code. The thermal flow characteristics inside the waste combustion chamber were numerically analyzed in accordance with adjusting the chamber width, injection angle of the torch, and combustion air temperature. As a result, the temperature in the range of 1,600–2,200 K was widely distributed at the center of the chamber. The optimized conditions are as follows: 400 mm chamber width, 20° injection angle, and 1,000 K combustion air temperature. The waste combustion chamber constituting multiple thermal plasma jets was constructed based on the numerical results. It was concluded that plasma jets generate a sufficient temperature to treat waste plastics.

Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among Emirati Residents in Ajman, United Arab Emirates

        Jayadevan Sreedharan,Jayakumary Muttappallymyalil,Shatha al Sharbatti,Sana Hassoun,Rawda Safadi,Iehab Abderahman,Wathib Abdulsamad Hameed,Abdul Mohsen Ibrahim,Mohamed Tahir Takana,Ahmad Mohammad Fouda 대한가정의학회 2015 Korean Journal of Family Medicine Vol.36 No.5

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM), particularly type-2 is a major public health concern worldwide. Not much information is available with regard to the incidence of DM in United Arab Emirates (UAE). This study aimed at determining the incidence rate of diabetes mellitus among Emirati population in Ajman, UAE. This is a retrospective cohort study. Methods: This study was conducted in all primary health care centers and Shaikh Khalifa and GMC Hospitals, Ajman, UAE where the Emirati population primarily go for diagnosis and treatment. The incident cases of diabetes mellitus were collected during the period 2010 January to December. Results: A total of 158 cases newly detected in 2010, 54 were among non-Emiratis and one was type-1 diabetes. Eliminating these, the remaining 101 were included in the analysis. The age of the patients ranged from 23 years to 78 years; 35 (34.7%) males and 66 (65.3%) were females. The overall incidence observed was 4.8/1,000 person-years (PY) with a female predominance of 6.3/1,000 PY against incidence among males of 3.3/1,000 PY. With regard to age specific incidence rate among males, it increases with age till 60 years and then showed a decreasing trend. Among females also the same trend was observed but not as similar to males. Conclusion: The highest incidence rate was observed in the 55–59 age group among males, 23.4/1,000 PY and females, 32.4/1,000 PY. Among males the incidence rate was much less compared to females in—the age groups older than 59 years.
