The Clinical Factors for Predicting Severe Diverticulitis in Korea: A Comparison with Western Countries

( Sun Young Kim ),( Tae Hoon Oh ),( Ji Young Seo ),( Tae Joo Jeon ),( Dong Dae Seo ),( Won Chang Shin ),( Won Choong Choi ),( Myeong Ja Jeong ) 대한소화기기능성질환·운동학회 2012 Gut and Liver Vol.6 No.1

Background/Aims: It is unclear whether the risk factors associated with complicated diverticulitis in Asian and Western countries are the same. We evaluated the risk factors associated with severe diverticulitis (SD) in Korea and compared the clinical characteristics of diverticulitis according to location. Methods: A retrospective review of 190 patients hospitalized with acute diverticulitis from January 2005 to June 2010 was conducted. SD was defined as one of the following: perforation, abscess, obstruction, sepsis, or peritonitis that required an urgent operation. Results: Twenty-four patients (12.6%) were diagnosed with SD. SD was significantly associated with older age, a fever over 38oC, changes in bowel habits and a high visceral adipose tissue (VAT)/total adipose tissue (TAT) ratio. Multivariate analysis showed that the risk factors for developing SD were an age of 40 years or more (odds ratio [OR], 3.2; p=0.032), male gender (OR, 4.0; p=0.021) and left-sided diverticulitis (OR, 6.2; p=0.017). Right-sided diverticulitis (n=175, 92.1%) was signifi cantly associated with younger ages, fewer changes in bowel habits, fewer comorbidities and non-SD. Conclusions: This study suggests that the risk factors for developing SD in Korea, where right-sided diverticulitis is predominant, are the male gender, an age of more than 40 years old, and left-sided diverticulitis. Given that there are different risk factors for developing SD in Western countries, different strategies for the treatment of diverticulitis in the Korean population seem to be needed. The Interactional Patterns of Socializing into Reading Strategy Development in an ESL Reading Class

        ( Sun Young Kim ) 경희대학교 언어연구소 2008 언어연구 Vol.25 No.2

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the different patterns of interaction ESL Korean students engaged in while learning reading strategies through the classroom interaction in the context of a TOEFL reading class. From a perspective of L2 socialization, this study explored how interactional patterns could constrain or promote the opportunities to develop reading strategies. This paper examined the sequences of peer interactions to observe to what extent the students` utterances were organized in the way to facilitate their learning of reading strategies. Using the strategy-related utterances and interviews with students, the researcher identified two different sequences of interactions that helped to understand the learner differences in reading strategy use. The results showed that the Korean students were better able to negotiate difficulties and expertise under the complete sequence of interaction described as asking questions, helping behaviors by others, and returning the initial task. On the contrary, under the incomplete sequence of interaction, the opportunities to develop students` own strategies often went awry in the middle of the classroom practices. The present study argues for the important role of the socially organized activity in reading strategy development in L2 reading classes. (Catholic University)

Health Effects of Ozone on Respiratory Diseases

( Sun-young Kim ),( Esther Kim ),( Woo Jin Kim ) 대한결핵 및 호흡기학회 2020 Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Vol.83 No.-

Ozone is known to cause bronchial inflammation and airway hyper-responsiveness via oxidative injury and inflammation. While other ambient air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen dioxide showed decreasing trends in mean annual concentrations, ozone concentrations have not declined recently in most countries across the world. Short-term exposure to high concentrations of ozone has been associated with increased mortality and cardiovascular and respiratory morbidity in many regions of the world. However, the long-term effects of ozone have been less investigated than the short-term exposure due to the difficulty in modeling ozone exposure and linking between individual exposures and health outcome data. A recently developed model of ozone exposure enabled the investigation of long-term ozone effects on health outcomes. Recent findings suggested that long-term exposure to ozone was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and respiratory mortality. Longitudinal studies using large cohorts also revealed that long-term exposure to ozone was associated with a greater decline in lung function and the progression of emphysema. The development of long-term standards for ozone as well as PM should be considered to protect the respiratory health of the general population and people with chronic respiratory diseases.

The Variation in the Use of Reading Strategies: A Case Study of Two Korean ESL Learners

        ( Sun Young Kim ) 경희대학교 언어연구소 2007 언어연구 Vol.24 No.2

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the difference in adaptability between two learners and its relationship to the success of learning in the context of the TOEFL reading class. Interviews with students were conducted to understand the different ways of using reading strategies. Using a case study approach, I explored how two Korean learners revised or reshaped the existing reading strategies over time to get insight into the changing dynamics of the strategy use. The variation in the use of reading strategies was captured by reclassifying the strategies as same, mixed, and new strategies at the end of the tutoring project. As prior studies suggested, a successful learner used a wider range of reading strategies than did a less able learner. However, the changing patterns of the strategy use were quite different across the learners, suggesting the nature of reading strategies that is learner specific. This study shows that the relationship of the strategy use to the success of L2 learning is complex and unpredictable, suggesting an important implication applicable to L2 classroom. A Study on the Model of English Reading and Writing Integration with the Use of Intermediate Texts

        Sun-Young Kim 한국영어학학회 2014 영어학연구 Vol.20 No.2

EFL college students produce various types of intermediate texts (i.e., support texts used as a means to compose essays) through the engagement in reading practices in connection to their writing purposes and incorporate these texts into their writing. This study examined patterns of engaging in reading practices in connection to writing purposes by focusing on the use of intermediate texts in the context of the EFL college composition classroom. From a cognitive and social perspective of reading-writing integration, the patterns of using intermediate texts were examined using L2 proficiency as a variable to explain the students' behaviors of using intermediate texts in their writing. Multiple sources of data (i.e., essays, reading materials, class notes, and interviews) collected over the semester are analyzed using a mixed-methods approach combining two different methods. The findings are as follows. First, the students produced a wide range of intermediate texts during the composing process although the quantity and quality of these texts differed across the three proficiency groups. Students with higher L2 proficiency produced more intermediate texts and effectively used those in light of their writing purposes than students with lower L2 proficiency. Second, patterns of using intermediate texts differed across the proficiency groups in selecting, organizing, and allocating reading sources. The 'surface reading-a few intermediate texts-writing' pattern described the students' behaviors of composing their essays with little interaction with types of intermediate texts. On the other hand, the students with higher proficiency revealed the 'purpose reading-elaborated intermediate texts-writing' pattern, which continued to help seek support through an elaboration of their intermediate texts during the composing process. This study provides specific ways to develop the instructional models of reading-writing integration differentially applicable to reading-to-write classrooms.

The role of online written communication channels for reading-writing connection

        Sun-Young Kim,Jiwon Paek 경희대학교 언어정보연구소 2019 언어연구 Vol.36 No.S

Linguistic Research 36(Special Edition), 81-105. This study developed an empirical model that could test reading-writing connection theory by examining the mediating role of online written communication channels. A set of hypotheses, drawn on a socio-cognitive theory of reading-writing connection, was developed to examine how reading-writing practices influenced literacy development through online written communication. Factor analysis was conducted to examine empirical relationships among the theoretical variables obtained from survey data. The results showed a significant role of online written communication in reinforcing the relationship between literacy practices and development. First, the individual and social practices of reading and writing had little impact on the development in both areas. Second, online written communication channels had a significant interaction effect on reading-writing practices both at the individual and social dimensions. Third, online written communication channels, such as SNS-based interaction using mobile devices, served as the mediating variable that empowered the relationship between reading-writing practices and development. The empirical results suggest that, to encourage L2 students toward a more integrative continuum of reading-writing practices, practitioners should incorporate online written communication channel into teaching practices. Effects of Land Surface and Atmospheric Synoptic Conditions on the Asian Dust observed over South Korea

        Sunyoung Kim,Eungul Lee,Seungho Lee 건국대학교 기후연구소 2019 기후연구 Vol.14 No.1

We explored the transporting processes for the Asian dust observed over South Korea. The frequency of Asian dust days (ADDs) were used to analyze the associations of the ADDs with land surface conditions over the four source regions, including inner-Mongolia, the Gobi Desert, Manchuria, and Loess Plateau, and atmospheric synoptic variables over central and eastern Asia. Precipitation and Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) in the source regions during the previous summer were negatively correlated with the ADDs in South Korea. Statistically and physically more significant processes were found in the associations of atmospheric synoptic conditions with the ADDs. The intensified winds of northwesterly-northerlynorthwesterly over a pathway of the Asian dust from the source regions to South Korea were identified during high ADDs years in South Korea. A dipole pattern of anti-cyclonic and cyclonic anomalies over central and eastern Asia, respectively, supported the Asian dust pathway.

Dissociation of the Phenylarsane Molecular Ion: A Theoretical Study

Sun Young Kim,최중철 대한화학회 2010 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.31 No.9

The potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the primary and secondary dissociations of the phenylarsane molecular ion (1a) were determined from the quantum chemical calculations using the G3(MP2)//B3LYP method. Several pathways for the loss of H• were determined and occurred though rearrangements as well as through direct bond cleavages. The kinetic analysis based on the PES for the primary dissociation showed that the loss of H2 was more favored than the loss of H•, but the H• loss competed with the H2 loss at high energies. The bicyclic isomer, 7-arsa-norcaradiene radical cation, was formed through the 1,2 shift of an α-H of 1a and played an important role as an intermediate for the further rearrangements in the loss of H• and the losses of As• and AsH. The reaction pathways for the formation of the major products in the secondary dissociations of [M-H]+ and [M-H2]+• were examined. The theoretical prediction explained the previous experimental results for the dissociation at high energies but not the dissociation at low energies.
