Biological applications of microfluidic gradient devices

<P>Molecular gradients play an important role in diverse physiological and pathological phenomena such as immune response, wound healing, development and cancer metastasis. In the past 10 years, engineering tools have been increasingly used to develop experimental platforms that capture important aspects of cellular microenvironments to allow quantitative and reproducible characterization of cellular response to gradients. This review discusses the emergence of microfluidics-based gradient generators and their applications in enhancing our understanding of fundamental biological processes such as chemotaxis and morphogenesis. The principles and applications of microfluidic gradient generation in both 2D and 3D cellular microenvironments are discussed with emphasis on approaches to manipulate spatial and temporal distribution of signaling molecules.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>This review presents design principles for microfluidic gradient devices and their applications in diverse biological research fields. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c0ib00055h'> </P>
Network Analysis of the Disaster Response Systems in the Waste Resource Recycling Center

Since the waste recycling process generates dust and flammable gas during fragmentation, there is always a risk of fire resulting therefrom, and in fact, fire is also frequently occurring. However, research on disaster management at recycling facilities deals only with the problem of process systems from a technical point of view, but it does not suggest concrete alternatives from the management point of view. Therefore, in this study, we analyze the influence of disaster response network of waste resource recycling center by organizational level like decision makers' level, general managers' level, and practitioners' level based on the concept of cognitive accuracy of network in consideration of administrative aspect. The main results are summarized as follows. The waste resource recycling center network was shown high cognitive accuracy between perceived network and actual network. However, when degree centrality was taken into consideration, the network by organization level was not matched. Whole network of the waste resource recycling center was composed mainly of decision makers. The decision makers' level network was composed mainly of decision makers too, but it was slightly different from the whole network. The general managers' level network was composed of decision makers like the whole network. On the other hand, the practitioners' level network was shown high degree centrality of safety and health manager and appeared different from the aforementioned networks. Through this analysis, we could confirm that factors affecting the influence of the network exist such that the entire network and the positions' level networks are different. We can suggest that this can be improved by deploying members who perform formal tasks at the center of the network so that everyone can agree to it.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The as-cast Mg-9Li alloys with difference Al-Si addition were fabricated using induction casting method under the argon atmosphere and then warm rolling process was performed at 473 K. The Al-Si addition to Mg-9Li alloy leads to the formation of Mg<SUB>2</SUB>Si intermetallic compounds and microstructural evolutions such as increased volume fraction of α-Mg phases and changed morphology of α-Mg primary phase on the as-cast specimens. Moreover, the addition of 0.05 wt.% Ti elements on Mg-9Li-3(Al-Si) alloy raised the further microstructural evolutions, e.g. volume fraction of α-Mg phases, which bring about change in the microstructure after warm rolling process. The effects of this micro alloying influences the formation of fine microstructure after warm rolling process, which is the main factor in determining the mechanical properties. With these microstructural evolutions, tensile strength was increased from 101.71 MPa to 247.41 MPa by the minor alloying and warm rolling process. Moreover, the remarkably enhanced strength of Mg-9Li-3(Al-Si) alloy was the results of the addition of 0.05 wt.% Ti from 247 MPa to 412 MPa. Furthermore, the warm press-forming tests were carried out at 523 K to evaluate the applicability of this novel alloy for commercial products.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The as-rolled microstructure is distinctly alternated by minor alloying of Al, Si, and Ti. </LI> <LI> The Al-Si added Mg-9Li-based alloy indeed shows a highly increased strength and elongation. </LI> <LI> The Ti containing alloy with 0.05 wt.% shows the highest tensile strength of 412 MPa. </LI> <LI> This novel Mg-9Li-based alloy is capable of near-net shaping via simple press forming process. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

<P>We studied dispersants for exfoliating bulk V2Se9 into one dimensional chain units. V2Se9, with a negative zeta potential of −30.1 mV, was acidic and strongly anchored with the amine head of octadecylamine by charge transfer reaction. The steric hindrance by the octadecyl tail promoted the dispersion of V2Se9 to the nano level.</P>

In the present study, we designed a microfluidic flatform that generates monodisperse droplets with diameters ranging from hundreds of nanometers to several micrometers. To generate fine droplets, T-junction and flow-focusing geometry are integrated into the microfluidic channel. Relatively large aqueous droplets are generated at the upstream T-junction and transported toward the flow-focusing geometry, where each droplet is broken up into the targeted size by the action of viscous stresses. Because the droplet prior to rupture blocks the straight channel that leads to the flow-focusing geometry, it moves very slowly by the pressure difference applied between the advancing and receding regions of the moving droplet. This configuration enables very low flow rate of inner fluid and higher flow rate ratio between inner and outer fluids at the flow-focusing region. It is shown that the present microfluidic device can generate droplets with diameters about 1 micrometer size and standard deviation less than 3%.

<P>Ion-exchange chromatography can be used to effectively replace the lithium ion of LiMo3Se3 with a proton. The enlargement of the Stern layer distance caused by this ion exchange improves the dispersibility of (Mo3Se3<SUP>−</SUP>)∞ chains and also prevents the re-bundling and aggregation of nanowires in aqueous solutions, even at high concentrations (1 mg mL<SUP>−1</SUP>).</P>

본 론문은 방향을 나타내는 복합동사, 후항동사 가운데서 상하관계를 나타내는 타동사 “-上げる/~올리다” “-下げる/~내리다”를 중심으로 후항동사의 의미를 분석하였다. 상하관계를 나타내는 후항동사가 물리적방향을 나타내는 경우와 사회적방향을 나타내는 경우에 일본어와 조선어의 대응양상이 다르게 나타나고 이를 후항으로 하는 복합동사에 지향적은유가 반영됨을 알수 있다.

본 논문에서는 영역 분할과 영상의 움직임 정보를 이용한 깊이맵 생성에 관한 기법을 제안하였다. 2D/3D 변환 알고리즘에서 2차원 영상에서 얻은 깊이 정보는 2차원 영상을 3차원 영상으로 변환 가능하게 하는 핵심 기술이 된다. 영역을 분할하고 계산되어진 움직임 값 (intensity)을 분할된 각 영역에 부여함으로서 깊이맵을 얻을 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 초기 단계에서 영역을 분할한 뒤, 입력 영상을 그룹화 하여 양방향 탐색을 통한 움직임 추정 연산을 수행토록 하여 보다 정확한 깊이 정보를 획득하고, 최종적으로 얻은 결과에 각 화소에 해당 되는 확률적 통계에 의한 후처리 기법을 사용하였다. 보다 정확한 깊이정보를 영역별로 지정하고, 후처리 기법을 사용함에 따라 보다 신뢰도 높은 깊이맵 영상을 생성할 수 있었다.
