Utilizing the n-back Task to Investigate Working Memory and Extending Gerontological Educational Tools for Applicability in School-aged Children

        Chih-Chin Liang,Si-Jie Fu 한국데이터전략학회 2024 Journal of information technology applications & m Vol.31 No.1

In this research, a cohort of two children, aged 7-8 years, was selected to participate in a specialized three-week training program aimed at enhancing their working memory. The program consisted of three sessions, each lasting approximately 30 minutes. The primary goal was to investigate the impact and developmental trajectory of working memory in school-aged children. Working memory plays a significant role in young children’s learning and daily activities. To address the needs of this demographic, products should offer both educational and enjoyable activities that engage working memory. Digital educational tools, known for their flexibility, are suitable for both older individuals and young children. By updating software or modifying content, these tools can be effectively repurposed for young learners without extensive hardware changes, making them both cost-effective and practical. For example, memory training games initially designed for older adults can be adapted for young children by altering images, music, or storylines. Furthermore, incorporating elements familiar to children, like animals, toys, or fairy tales, can increase their engagement in these activities. Historically, working memory capabilities have been assessed predominantly through traditional intelligence tests. However, recent research questions the adequacy of these behavioral measures in accurately detecting changes in working memory. To bridge this gap, the current study utilized electroencephalography (EEG) as a more sophisticated and precise tool for monitoring potential changes in working memory after the training. The research findings were revealing. Participants showed marked improvement in their performance on n-back tasks, a standard measure for evaluating working memory. This improvement post-training strongly supports the effectiveness of the training program. The results indicate that such targeted and structured training programs can significantly enhance the working memory abilities of children in this age group, providing promising implications for educational strategies and cognitive development interventions.

Highly Uniform Core/Shell Structured CoFe2O4/MIL-100(Fe) Nanofibers for Efficient Visible Light Photocatalysis

        Jun Liu,Meng Sun,Meng-Jie Chang,Si-Meng Fan,Qian Hui,Fu-Rong Ni,Bin Yuan 한국섬유공학회 2021 Fibers and polymers Vol.22 No.2

Novel CoFe2O4/MIL-100(Fe) (CFO/MIL-100(Fe)) core/shell nanofibers were prepared by successive ionic layeradsorption and reaction (SILAR) assembly of MIL-100(Fe) on electrospun CoFe2O4 nanofibers. The MIL-100(Fe) shellswere constructed on the dispersed CoFe2O4 fiber surface with high uniformity, homogeneous thickness and high stability. Due to the inherent porosity of MIL-100(Fe), a higher specific surface area of 225.77 m2/g is achieved for the CFO/MIL-100(Fe)-10 sample. The formed CFO/MIL-100(Fe) catalysts exhibit high catalytic activity towards degradation of rhodamineB (RhB) under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity remains above 77 % within 60 min illumination after fourcycles. Due to the simple synthetic method, highly uniform structure, strong magnetic recoverable, as well as goodphotocatalytic performance, the obtained CFO/MIL-100(Fe) core/shell nanofibers could be promising photocatalysts forpractical application.

      • ST6Gal-I Predicts Postoperative Clinical Outcome for Patients with Localized Clear-cell Renal Cell Carcinoma

        Liu, Hai-Ou,Wu, Qian,Liu, Wei-Si,Liu, Yi-Dong,Fu, Qiang,Zhang, Wei-Juan,Xu, Le,Xu, Jie-Jie Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.23

Hyperactivated ${\alpha}2$-6-sialylation on N-glycans due to overexpression of the Golgi enzyme ${\beta}$-galactoside: ${\alpha}2$-6-sialyltransferase (ST6Gal-I) often correlates with cancer progression, metastasis, and poor prognosis. This study was aimed to determine the association between ST6Gal-I expression and the risk of recurrence and survival of patients with localized clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) following surgery. We retrospectively enrolled 391 patients (265 in training cohort and 126 in validation cohort) with localized ccRCC underwent nephrectomy at a single center. Tissue microarrays were constructed for immunostaining of ST6Gal-I. Prognostic value and clinical outcomes were evaluated. High ST6Gal-I expression was associated with Fuhrman grade (p<0.001 and p=0.016, respectively) and the University of California Los-Angeles Integrated Staging System (UISS) score (p=0.004 and p=0.017, respectively) in both cohorts. Patients with high ST6Gal-I expression had significantly worse overall survival (OS) (p<0.001 and p<0.001, respectively) and recurrence free survival (RFS) (p<0.001 and p=0.002, respectively) than those with low expression in both cohorts. On multivariate analysis, ST6Gal-I expression remained associated with OS and RFS even after adjusting for the UISS score. Stratified analysis suggested that the association is more pronounced among patients with low and intermediate-risk disease defined by the UISS score. High ST6Gal-I expression is a potential independent adverse predictor of survival and recurrence in ccRCC patients, and the prognostic value is most prominent in those with low and intermediate-risk disease defined by the UISS score.
