        Upregulation of heme oxygenase-1 by ginsenoside Ro attenuates lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation in macrophage cells

        Background: The beneficial effects of ginsenoside species have been well demonstrated in a number of studies. However, the function of ginsenoside Ro (GRo), an oleanane-type saponin, has not been suffi- ciently investigated. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of GRo in vitro using the Raw 264.7 mouse macrophage cell line treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and to clarify the possible mechanism of GRo involving heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), which itself plays a critical role in self-defense in the presence of inflammatory stress. Methods: Raw 264.7 cells were pretreated with GRo (up to 200mM) for 1 h before treatment with 1 mg/ mL LPS, and both cell viability and inflammatory markers involving HO-1 were evaluated. Results: GRo significantly increased cell viability in a dose dependent manner following treatment with LPS, and decreased levels of reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide. GRo decreased inflammatory cytokines such as nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 induced by LPS. Moreover, GRo increased the expression of HO-1 in a dose dependent manner. Cotreatment of GRo with tin protoporphyrin IX, a selective inhibitor of HO-1, not only inhibited upregulation of HO-1 induced by GRo, but also reversed the anti-inflammatory effect of GRo in LPS treated Raw 264.7 cells. Conclusion: GRo induces anti-inflammatory effects following treatment with LPS via upregulation of HO-1.

      • EFFECT OF AEROBIC EXERCISES ON BRAIN SCAN AND BLOOD IN SENIOR

        Effect of dance sports on testosterone and brain blood in senior men. It is known that as for the old people, the hormones change caused by exercises has an effect on the blood vessel of a brain and that it also plays an important role in the prevention and medical treatment of senile dementia. The "MMSE-K" test report was used in this study. So the sex hormones(testosterone)) was analyzed in the blood for 2 weeks, divided into 4 terms. By selecting one male subject, the SPECT was used to take pictures of their brain. The results are as followings. Dance sport didn't cause detectable changes in the testosterone of man. When the integrating the results, is was possible to notice the testosterone in men didn't show significant changes until the 4th term. We consi! der that the short term exercise didn't affect the changes of testosterone. However, after adapting to the long term exercise, it seemed to be partial effective. So the increase of maintenance of testosterone, which is the cause of vessel expansion, is thought to increase the brain blood and effective in preventing brain vein diseases. When the integrating the results, it was possible to notice the testosterone in men didn't show significant changes. So the increase of maintance of testosterone, which is the cause of vessel expansion, is thought to increase the brain blood and effect in preventing brain vein disease.       • 단시간 서킷트레이닝이 허리 근기능 개선에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study was to how the strength exercise program affected the lumbar functional improvement of lumbar pain patients. Subjects were consisted of 30~40 years old male and female with lumbar pain that have trained in 8 weeks, 2 times a week, 60 minutes per session. The lumbar strengths were measured by flexion and extension of MedX lumbar extension machine. The results were as results; The significant improvement was founded on the angle from 0 to 72 in lumbar strength after 8 weeks training in all group. Especially, angle of 24, 48, 60 have improved in the female group compared to pre-exercise (p<.001). And angle of all have improved in the male group compared to pre-exercise (p<.01). The results suggested that the strength exercise program has a positive effect on improvement of lumbar strength, and further study need to like to degenerative diseases of different back type for more effects.         This study shows that the quality standard prescribed in STCW 1955 is a kind of the quality system similar to ISO9000 series, ISO14000 series, and ISM code, and closely related to SOLAS and MARPOL by comparison with each other in various respects. And developing scheme of quality system for maritime educational institution is then also proposed for giving instructions to the concerned. This work is carried out for the first time in the maritime education field, and is thus expected to be very useful and helpful to personnels employed in developing and operating the quality system in the point of practice.

        Image compression techniques have been necessary to transfer and save a great amount of image data in an efficient way. Because the compression and decompression of image signal require the real time processing, various hardware implementation methods have been studied. In this paper we propose the algorithm which is parallel form of processing 2 dimensional 8*8 blocks simultaneously, so increase speeds. It outputs compressed bit sequences 8 clocks later for the input data synchronized to clocks. Proposed algorithm is designed using VHDL. Simulation and circuit synthesis has been performed by the Powerview CAD Tool on the SUN Sparc-10 workstation. Results shows that maximum operating frequency is up to 15㎒. The final schematic circuit and comparison of processing speed are shown.

      • 일부농촌 지역노인들의 유병상태와 일상생활 능력

        This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence rate, activity of daily living of rural elderly. The study group was composed of 820 old people aged 65 or more, living in Chungnam provincial area. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The prevalence rate rise rapidly with increasing age and that of male was 65.9%, and female was 70.8%. The prevalence rate of chronic diaseses were the highest in muscular disease and arthropathy as 51.5%, 16.8% in cerebrovascular disease and 12.6% in respiratory disease. 2. The ability score of daily living of male as 76.3% was similar that of female as 74.7%. The ability score of daily living went down with increasing age and statistically significant(P<0.01). The ability score of daily living of those who were not ill were higher than that of those who were ill. The ADL of those who have been a spouse was higher than that of those who were single. The number of family member and alcohol drinking influenced to the score of ADL, but level of education and smoking didn't influenced to that. The diseases that influenced to the score of ADL were cerebrovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes mellitus. The factors that influenced to the ADL were age, the presence of chronic disease, alcohol drinking, and the number of family members. 3. The score of cognitive function of male as 89.3% was higher than that of female as 86.1%. The score of cognitive function was the highest in 65-69 years of age. The presence of ill didn't influence the score of cognitive function. The score of cognitive function of those who have been a spouse was higher than that of those who were single. The number of family member, alcohol drinking, level of education, and smoking didn't influence the score of cognitive function. The score of cognitive function were high in renal disease, hepatic disease, and cancer, but that were low in cerebrovascular disease, muscular disease and arthropathy, and respiratory disease. The factors that influenced to the cognitive function were age, marital status.
