Biological Potential of Bioorganic Fertilizer Fortified with Bacterial Antagonist for the Control of Tomato Bacterial Wilt and the Promotion of Crop Yields

( Kai Wu ),( Zhiying Fang ),( Lili Wang ),( Saifei Yuan ),( Rong Guo ),( Biao Shen ),( Qirong Shen ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2016 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.26 No.10

The application of Bacillus sp. in the biological control of plant soilborne diseases has been shown to be an environmentally friendly alternative to the use of chemical fungicides. In this study, the effects of bioorganic fertilizer (BOF) fortified with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SQY 162 on the suppression of tomato bacterial wilt were investigated in pot experiments. The disease incidence of tomato wilt after the application of BOF was 65.18% and 41.62% lower at 10 and 20 days after transplantation, respectively, than in the control condition. BOF also promoted the plant growth. The SQY 162 populations efficiently colonized the tomato rhizosphere, which directly suppressed the number of Ralstonia solanacearum in the tomato rhizosphere soil. In the presence of BOF, the activities of defense-related enzymes in tomato were lower than in the presence of the control treatment, but the expression levels of the defense-related genes of the plants in the salicylic acid and jasmonic acid pathways were enhanced. It was also found that strain SQY 162 could secrete antibiotic surfactin, but not volatile organic compounds, to suppress Ralstonia. The strain could also produce plant growth promotion compounds such as siderophores and indole-3-acetic acid. Thus, owing to its innate multiple-functional traits and its broad biocontrol activities, we found that this antagonistic strain isolated from the tobacco rhizosphere could establish itself successfully in the tomato rhizosphere to control soilborne diseases.

      • Refining and Validating a Two-stage and Web-based Cancer Risk Assessment Tool for Village Doctors in China

        Shen, Xing-Rong,Chai, Jing,Feng, Rui,Liu, Tong-Zhu,Tong, Gui-Xian,Cheng, Jing,Li, Kai-Chun,Xie, Shao-Yu,Shi, Yong,Wang, De-Bin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.24

The big gap between efficacy of population level prevention and expectations due to heterogeneity and complexity of cancer etiologic factors calls for selective yet personalized interventions based on effective risk assessment. This paper documents our research protocol aimed at refining and validating a two-stage and web-based cancer risk assessment tool, from a tentative one in use by an ongoing project, capable of identifying individuals at elevated risk for one or more types of the 80% leading cancers in rural China with adequate sensitivity and specificity and featuring low cost, easy application and cultural and technical sensitivity for farmers and village doctors. The protocol adopted a modified population-based case control design using 72, 000 non-patients as controls, 2, 200 cancer patients as cases, and another 600 patients as cases for external validation. Factors taken into account comprised 8 domains including diet and nutrition, risk behaviors, family history, precancerous diseases, related medical procedures, exposure to environment hazards, mood and feelings, physical activities and anthropologic and biologic factors. Modeling stresses explored various methodologies like empirical analysis, logistic regression, neuro-network analysis, decision theory and both internal and external validation using concordance statistics, predictive values, etc..

      • Sliding Mode Control Design Based on New Approaching Criteria for Linear Lipschitz Switching Surface

        Kai Zheng,Tielong Shen,Yu Yao 제어로봇시스템학회 2009 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2009 No.8

A new design method of sliding mode control (SMC) is proposed to generalize the conversional procedure which is usually based on Filippov’s approaching conditions for only smooth surface. As the fundamental result, the new approaching criteria are developed to show the sufficient conditions on the relation between the trajectories and a nonsmooth surface in state space, if the dynamics of the trajectories can be described by Filippov’s differential inclusion. According to the new approaching criteria, the approaching phase design of SMC can be relaxed, through the switching surface may be nonsmooth. Furthermore, for a class of nonlinear single-input single-output (SISO) systems, the sliding mode controller with a linear Lipschitz continuous switching surface can be systemically designed. From the viewpoint of SMC, it provides a new path to realize the different requirements of the sliding motion according to the partitioned regions.

Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility of the Late Cretaceous-Eocene sediments in the southeastern Fenwei Graben and its tectono-sedimentary significance

        Kai Jiang,Guanzuo Wu,Guohao Si,Jiangang Li,Boyang Zheng,Qi Shen,Shida Song 한국지질과학협의회 2023 Geosciences Journal Vol.27 No.4

The Fenwei Graben located in the conjoint region between the Neo-Tethys tectonic domain and the western Pacific tectonic domain is key to understanding the tectonic evolution of the East Asian interior. Extensive Late Cretaceous–Paleogene fluvial and lacustrine deposits within the southeastern Fenwei Graben, provide ideal archives of early tectono-sedimentary evolution in Fenwei Graben. Recently, we find two complete Late Cretaceous–Cenozoic sections in the Lingbao Basin. These unique sections provide an excellent opportunity to investigate regional tectono-sedimentary evolution and its potential dynamic mechanisms in Fenwei Graben. The anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) is an effective and economic method to obtain information about tectonic and/or sedimentary evolution recorded in deposits. To this end, we present an integrated rock magnetism and AMS study of 36 sampling sites from these two sections that span the interval from the Late Cretaceous to the Early Eocene. Our rock magnetism results suggest that hematite and magnetite are the main magnetic carriers of remanence, and paramagnetic minerals and hematite are major contributors to AMS in the Lingbao Basin. In addition, the reverse, intermediate and anomalous magnetic fabrics are found in these two sections, which may result from the contribution of iron-bearing carbonates in deposits. The AMS of the Lingbao Basin is a primary sedimentary fabric with the K1 direction antiparallel to the preferential paleocurrent direction. During the Paleocene, the clockwise rotation of the paleocurrent directions in both sections is more likely to be caused by the rotation of the Lingbao basin or the relatively rapid uplift of western provenance under the influence of the India–Eurasia convergence. Moreover, the inferred early evolution of the Fenwei Graben is likely controlled by both the western Pacific plate subduction and India–Eurasia convergence.

MED1 induces M2 polarization of tumor-associated macrophages to aggravate breast cancer

        Shen Ye,Zhou Lianming,Xu Meiyu,Tan Zhanhai,Yao Kai,Wang Wenjie 한국유전학회 2023 Genes & Genomics Vol.45 No.12

Background Breast cancer is a common malignant tumor in female, and its 5-year survival rate remains low. The correlation between mediator subunit 1 (MED1) gene and macrophage phenotypic transformation may be a key factor affecting the therapeutic effect on cancer. Objective The present study intended to explore the role of MED1 in macrophage polarization and its further influence on the malignant behaviors of breast cancer. Methods Bioinformatics analysis was carried out to predict the expression pattern of MED1 in breast cancer. Flow cytometry was conducted to detect the effect of MED1 overexpression or silencing on macrophage polarization. ELISA was applied to analyze the effect of abnormal MED1 expression on cytokine secretion of macrophages. CCK-8, colony formation, Transwell and scratch healing assays were applied to investigate the effects of macrophage conditioned medium on the malignant behaviors of breast cancer cells. Results MED1 expression was prominently increased in M2 macrophages, and overexpression of MED1 significantly increased M2 polarization of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and IL-10 cytokine level. Meanwhile, M2 macrophages with MED1 overexpression could significantly promote the malignant behaviors of breast cancer cells. Dasatinib rescue experiment further confirmed that MED1-induced M2 macrophage polarization could facilitate the malignant progression of breast cancer cells. Conclusion In summary, MED1 could induce M2 macrophage polarization and thus regulate the malignant behaviors of breast cancer cells.

Eclosion hormone functions in larva-pupa-adult ecdysis in Leptinotarsa decemlineata

        Shen Chen-Hui,Jin Lin,Fu Kai-Yun,Guo Wen-Chao,Li Guo-Qing 한국응용곤충학회 2021 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.24 No.1

In Drosophila melanogaster, ecdysis-triggering hormone (ETH) and eclosion hormone (EH) mutually enhance the release of each other through a positive feedback loop. Both are involved in the stimulation of ecdysis behavior series and molting-related physiological preparations. However, whether 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) controls eh expression and whether EH plays a similar role in non-Drosophilid insects remain to be determined. In Lep tinotarsa decemlineata, we found that Ldeh mRNA levels were high in the early and/or late stages and low in the intermediate period within each larval instar, indicating that the mRNA peaks positively correlate with 20E pulses. Consistent with the indication, we confirmed that 20E signaling stimulated the transcription of Ldeh. RNA interference (RNAi)-aided knockdown of Ldeh at the final instar stage slightly impaired pupation and signifi cantly affected wing expansion. Around 20% of the Ldeh RNAi larvae remained as prepupae, completely wrapped in the old larval cuticles. These prepupae gradually darkened, dried and withered, and finally died. The remaining (about 80%) Ldeh hypomorphs became pupae and emerged as abnormal adults, bearing smaller and wrinkle elytra and hindwings. The adult tracheae in the Ldeh hypomorphs were full of liquid. In addition, the low pupation rate and high deformed adult proportion cannot be rescued by ingestion of either 20E or juvenile hormone. Thus, EH is critical for ecdysis and trachea clearance in L. decemlineata. The failure of trachea clearance may disenable air-swallowing during larva-pupa-adult transition and thus impacts wing growth and expansion.
