      • A comparative review between amines and ammonia as sorptive media for post-combustion CO2 capture

        Shakerian, Farid,Kim, Ki-Hyun,Szulejko, Jan E.,Park, Jae-Woo Elsevier 2015 APPLIED ENERGY Vol.148 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In recent decades, the accelerating economic and social developments have led to exponentially increasing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. As a result, much research efforts have been directed toward more effective measures for the carbon capture and storage (CCS). In this review, we first briefly described the general background on the various techniques available for the abatement of CO2 emissions worldwide. Then, we provided an in-depth discussion regarding the two comparable control technologies, i.e., the amine- vs. ammonia-based capture approaches; ammonia has lower energy costs than monoethanolamine (MEA). The applicability of each method was described further with an emphasis on their advantages and disadvantages. We also briefly discussed the available options for post-absorption processing such as recovery of absorbed CO2, compression, and storage. Many immobilized amines as adsorbents can only be regenerated a few times or are a ‘once-through process’. This may deplete the global supply of those materials if CCS is scaled up in excess of Mton CO2 captured per year. Ideally, the captured CO2 should be isolated from the atmosphere indefinitely and/or photochemically reduced (either biologically or industrially). Finally, we explored future challenges in this field of study to envision and suggest more optimized solutions.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Only a few reagents are available to facilitate the capture CO2 on a large scale. </LI> <LI> CCS is basically employed for both pre-combustion and/or post-combustion. </LI> <LI> We focused on CCS technologies available for both pre- and post-combustion stages. </LI> <LI> The common sorption methods used for CCS are amines and aqueous ammonia. </LI> <LI> In our review, each method for CCS is analyzed and compared on parallel basis. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Advanced polymeric materials: Synthesis and analytical application of ion imprinted polymers as selective sorbents for solid phase extraction of metal ions

        Shakerian, F.,Kim, K.H.,Kwon, E.,Szulejko, J.E.,Kumar, P.,Dadfarnia, S.,Haji Shabani, A.M. Elsevier Scientific Pub. Co 2016 Trends in analytical chemistry Vol.83 No.2

<P>Over the past several decades, much progress has been made in the development of ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) with the aid of novel types of tailored polymeric materials (e.g., nanomaterials and hybrid materials). Because of such efforts, IIPs are now widely employed as advanced analytical tools in a variety of sectors (e.g., as sorbents for solid phase extraction of metal ions). Recently, due to the advancement of polymeric materials (PMs), an increased number of studies have been made to expand the practical applicability of IIPs. In this review, the basic theories involved in the polymerization methods of IIPs are described along with their synthesis and diverse fields of applications (e.g., solid phase extraction (SPE), sensors, and membrane separators). The outcomes of marginal donor hearts compared with ideal donors: a single-center experience in Iran

        Behnam Shakerian,Sanaz Dehghani,Haleh Ashraf,Shahrokh Karbalai,Abbas Soleimani,Atieh Rezaeefar,Zahra Shajari,Hamidreza Hekmat,Marzieh Latifi,Azadeh Sadatnaseri 대한이식학회 2022 Korean Journal of Transplantation Vol.36 No.2

Background: Heart transplantation has been considered the gold-standard treatment for patients with end-stage heart failure. This study assessed the survival outcomes of mar- ginal donor hearts compared with ideal donor hearts in Iran. Methods: This retrospective study is based on the follow-up data of heart donors and recipients in the Sina Hospital Organ Procurement Unit. Among the 93 participants, 75 were categorized as ideal donors (group A) and 18 as marginal donors (group B). Group C included heart recipients who received a standard organ, and group D included heart recipients who received a marginal one. To analyze differences in patient character- istics among the groups, posttransplant heart survival was assessed in all groups. All data were obtained from the hospital records. Results: The mean age of the donors was 26.27±11.44 years (median age, 28 years). The marginal age showed a significant association with donor age. The age of recipients had a significant effect on survival days in the ideal group. Most patients survived for at least 1 year, with a median of 645 days in recipients from marginal donors and 689 days in re- cipients from ideal donors. Conclusions: Considering the lack of organ availability in Iran, it may be possible to use marginal donors for marginal recipients, therefore reducing the number of people on the waitlist. We also recommend establishing a national marginal donor system specifically for Iranian patients to extend the donor pool.

Service Design by Identification and Prioritization of Customer Demands in Kano Model

        Ali Sarafraz Ardakani,Shima Baradaran Ghannad,Mohammad Mirmohammadi Sadrabad,Hamed Shakerian 대한산업공학회 2018 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.17 No.3

Rail Transportation is the best option of transport in many countries of the world. One of the factors that increase the share of rail passenger transportation is developing rail transportation of passenger by increasing level of customer satisfaction in this type of service. The main purpose of this paper is service design by identification and prioritization of customer demands in Kano model. The statistical population consisted of travelers who used the Iran South-East Railway services. To determine the sample size, as there was not any certain statistical test as research requirement, we used the saturated sample, so that we selected samples as long as the opinions became converged. Semi-structured interviews, interviews with experts and a questionnaire for a two-week period in January 2014 were used to collect data. The final questionnaire was compiled and its validity was confirmed after obtaining the expert’s points of view and fixing deficiencies and problems. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to assess the reliability of questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the obtained information from the questionnaires. Kano model, QFD method in the SPSS and Excel were used for the inferential statistics. Data analysis in the Kano model and QFD method was done in Excel software; and Spss16 software was used to measure the reliability. After identifying the characteristics of service with the help of experts, quality Function Development (QFD) was used to prioritize them and finally, required services has been ranked and proper selection of personnel, upgrade facilities of rail and the exact timing of train schedules are 3 first priority, if first six priorities are done, almost half of the costumers will be satisfied.
