The aerial parts of Gomphocarpus sinaicus Boiss. yielded four flavonoids that were identified asisorhamnetin 3-O-rhamnoglucoside (1), luteolin-7-O-glucoside-3-O-rhamnoside (2), rutin (3) and rutin-7-O-rhamnoside (4). All of the isolated flavonoids were identified by spectroscopic methods (UV, FAB-MS, 1H-NMR& 13C-NMR) and in comparison with the literature data. The isolated flavonoids 1, 2 and 4 are reported here forthe first time from Gomphocarpus sinaicus Boiss. Three sets of experiments were carried out using the defattedalcoholic extract of Gomphocarpus sinaicus Boiss: the 1st experiment indicated that the LD50 was 49.82 mg/100 gb.wt. of intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected mice. The toxic signs were recorded within the first 24 hr post-injection.The 2nd experiment revealed that the extract of the plant exhibited significant anti-inflammatory effects in normalrats. The 3rd experiment was found that the tested doses of the extract in diabetic rats induced a significant decreasein serum glucose, AST, ALT, triglycerides, cholesterol and LDL, while HDL caused a significant increase.

Synthetic coumarin and furocoumarin derivatives were evaluated for anticoagulant activity and the effect on liver and kidney function. It was found that all of the compounds under investigation proved to be neither toxic nor lethal up to 500 mg/100 g body weight as a single dose for 24 hrs. All tested compounds showed a significant increase in prothrombin time (PT) in the acute model but failed to show a significant action in the chronic model. Furthermore, all tested compounds revealed a significant increase in activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) as compared to control value in both acute and chronic model. Also, all tested compounds did not cause any significant changes on liver and kidney functions in rats.

specimens of sponges collected from Red Sea, Egypt, were investigated f or their contents ofsecondary metabolites. The crude extracts of the sponges were tested for their anti-inflammatory and analgesiceffects. The toxic effects of the extracts of the two marine sponges were studied. LD50 determination revealed thatthe investigated extracts of ‘Igernella and Ircinia spp’ were 4.69 and 134.7mg/100g b.wt., respectively, whentwo marine sponges extracts showed significant anti-inflamatory and analgesic eff ects.
