Two novel technologies were evaluated for their effects on growth in young ruminants. Nine trials evaluated the effect of dietary melatonin on growth performance and carcass composition in growing cattle. Additionally, four trials evaluated dietary antibodies against interleukin-10 (aIL-10) on growth performance in both cattle and sheep. Feeding melatonin to non-implanted beef heifers increased growth performance by 3.5% and hot carcass weight by 6 kg. However, when melatonin was fed to implanted beef steers, no difference in any growth parameter was observed. A meta-analysis of seven of the trials suggested feeding melatonin increased weight gain and gain efficiency each by 2%, however neither effect was less than P < 0.15. Further research is needed to re-assess the 2% difference in growth rate and gain efficiency, as the technology could aid in the production of livestock. Maintaining health of food producing animals without the use of antibiotics is a concern for both farmers and consumers. Three trials that utilized grazing cattle or lambs were analyzed to assess if dietary aIL-10 fed for 14 d would alter animal growth rate. In two trials, when nematode infection was high, feeding aIL-10 increased animal growth rate compared to animals that had not received a de-worming agent. Furthermore, feeding aIL-10 for 14 d after steers arrived to the feedlot increased gain efficiency by 6% and antibiotic usage was numerically lower for the aIL-10 fed steers compared to the control treatment. Data reported in this dissertation are foundational for both of the aforementioned technologies. Both technologies appear to aid in the production of livestock for human consumption by increasing animal growth parameters.

      • Flow theory for flocks of autonomous mobile physical agents

This research is a study of fuzzy rules which could be used to model autonomous entities and the development of a theory to describe the traffic flow of autonomous mobile physical agents. Pedestrians, autonomous vehicles, or terrain-searching robots could be modeled as autonomous mobile physical agents. For this research, an object-oriented architecture was developed to implement simulations of agents for analyzing their emergent behavior. In an agent system, agents execute their own set of rules during each iteration. The architecture in this research is a framework that can be used for experimenting with variations of rule sets to assist in discovering a rule set that results in desirable system-level behavior. The architecture was used to simulate a flock of mobile agents which navigate in 2-dimensional space. The output of the simulation (effective speed and collision probability) was regressed to develop flow theory equations to calculate the expected output as a function of several variables that affect the agent system. The flow theory equations describe the emergent behavior of the system, or system-level behavior resulting from interactions at the level of the parts of the system. The fuzziest rule set consistently gave the best results in terms of collision avoidance for this study. The improved collision avoidance is gained at the cost of a lower effective speed. However, the fuzziest rule set also has more complex rules, which means it takes longer to execute. In systems with agents traveling in scattered patterns, there were potential collisions among agents even at low utilization rates. This may indicate that a “traffic control” policy may be desirable when congestion reaches a limit.

My purpose for this dissertation is to develop an analytic informed by Sense-Making's communication-as-procedure framework in order to amplify theoretical understanding of dialogic activity within electronic public spheres that connects agency to structure. I suggest that current theory based upon Habermas' theories of communicative action and the public sphere may be too limited for describing grounded communicative practice within online environments. Rather, I posit that the nouns of electronic public spheres can be reconceptualized as verbs, resulting in the development of communicative theory focusing on grounded human practice within CMC environments. To this end, I analyzed 1,360 postings contributed to three pedagogical online discussion groups by 124 participants in 1999 and 2000. Using a customized communication-as-procedure coding template, I coded each posting for the presence of eleven verbings: nine predictors (emotings, situatings, self-growings, engagings, perspectivings, empathyings, generalizings, reflectings, and conscientizings) and two criterions (consensusings and dissensusings). Through factor analysis, these predictors loaded on four factors: Selfings, Otherings, Societyings, and Actings. Among the major findings, Otherings demonstrated a strong conjoint relationship with consensusings/dissensusings; postings that included Otherings featured very high percentages of consensusings/dissensusings (86.4%), while postings that did not include Otherings featured very low levels of consensusings/dissensusings (2%). The other three factors—Selfings, Societyings, and Actings—demonstrated almost no relationship with the consensusing/dissensusing outcomes. Second, based upon qualitative analysis exploring subthemes within the postings, I suggest that two communicative modes were operating within the electronic public spheres: (a) a contemplative mode in which participants focused primarily upon their own life struggles, self-learnings, and actings to change social structures, and (b) a dialogic mode, where participants primarily engaged other participants through supportive, confrontational, and consensual/dissensual communicative practices. In particular, contemplative postings appeared to create dialogic spaces that allowed participants to offer their own thoughts/musings/ideas into the public spheres relatively free from consensual/dissensual structural forces. I conclude that electronic public sphere theory should be reconceptualized to take both modes into account.
