Design and Vibration Analysis of Tri-axis Linear Vibratory MEMS Gyroscope

In this study, the design of a tri-axis micromachined gyroscope is proposed and the vibration characteristic of the structure is analyzed. Tri-axis vibratory gyroscopes that utilize Coriolis effect are the most commonly used micromachined inertial sensors because of their advantages, such as low cost, small packaging size, and low power consumption. The proposed design is a single structure with four proof masses, which are coupled to their adjacent ones. The coupling springs of the proof masses orthogonally transfer the driving vibrational motion. The resonant frequencies of the gyroscope are analyzed by finite element method (FEM) simulation. The suspension beam spring design of proof masses limits the resonance frequencies of four modes, viz., drive mode, pitch, roll and yaw sensing mode in the range of 110 Hz near 21 kHz, 21173 Hz, 21239 Hz, 21244 Hz, and 21280 Hz, respectively. The unwanted modes are separated from the drive and sense modes by more than 700 Hz. Thereafter the drive and the sense mode vibrations are calculated and simulated to confirm the driving feasibility and estimate the sensitivity of the gyroscope. The cross-axis sensitivities caused by driving motion are 1.5 deg/s for both x- and y-axis, and 0.2 deg/s for z-axis.

동북아시아 초미세먼지의 희토류 원소 특성 비교: 북경과 광주

희토류 원소(rare earth elements, REEs)는 유사한 물리적·화학적 성질을 가지고 있어 지질학적 환경변화를 해석하는 유용한 도구로 사용되고 있다. 이번 연구에서는 2018년 1월 한 달간 북경 및 광주광역시에서 포집된 초미세먼지 내 희토류 원소의 특성을 비교하였다. 북경 및 광주 초미세먼지 내 총 희토류 원소 농도는 북경이 광주보다 약 16배 높았으며 두 지역 모두 경희토류가 중희토류에 비해 8-10배 이상 부화되었다. Post Archean Australian Shale (PAAS) 표준화 분포 패턴을 통해 북경과 광주 초미세먼지는 Eu, Tb, Er이 다른 원소보다 부화된 양상을 보였고, 두 지역 모두 양(+)의 Eu 이상치와 음(-)의 Ce 이상치가 나타났다. 희토류 원소 간 상관관계를 통해 북경과 광주의 초미세먼지는 중국 사막 및 황토 고원과 북경 주변 도시(Zhangbei, Fengning, Miyun)의 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 이번 연구를 통해 초미세먼지 내 희토류 원소는 국가 간 미세먼지의 차이를 밝힐 수 있는 중요한 지시자로 활용될 수 있으며, 국내 미세먼지 기원 및 이동에 대한 보다 명확한 정보를 제공하는 유용한 도구로 활용될 것으로 판단된다. Rare earth elements (REEs) have been used as one of power tracers for understanding geological and environmental changes due to their similar physico-chemical properties. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of rare earth elements in atmospheric particulates (PM<sub>2.5</sub>) collected in Beijing and Gwangju during January 2018. The total concentrations of REEs in the Beijing samples were about 16X higher than those in Gwangju samples, and both samples are enriched in light REE than heavy REE, up to 8-10 times. The Post Archean Australian Shale (PAAS)-normalized pattern showed that both samples are enriched in Eu, Tb, and Er, and displayed positive Eu but negative Ce anomalies. The elemental correlations indicate that both samples originated from China desert and Loess plateau as well as cities surrounding Beijing. This study suggests that REEs in PM<sub>2.5</sub> can be used as a powerful proxy of revealing the difference between China and Korea, and provide basic information on the source and transport of PM<sub>2.5</sub>.

The purpose of this study is to develop a business model that efficiently converts diesel power generation systems to renewable energy microgrids (MG) in large-scale islands. Most of the previous studies on the conversion of renewable energy MG in islands had limitations dealing with efficiency from the perspective of suppliers. However, the microgrid has the characteristic of getting benefits through the interaction between the consumer and the supplier. In addition, the efficient MG business model from the perspective of new institutional economics is a structure in which consumers and suppliers jointly participate. Therefore, this study assumed that the MG business model in which the supplier’s MG and the consumer’s community solar participated would benefit all participants, and verified the assumptions using domestic island data. In terms of supplier investment, the cost of power supply (LCOE) of assumed model was calculated to be 14.0% lower than that of the diesel model and 3.7% lower than that of the supplier-only MG model. From the perspective of consumer investment, electricity bills are expected to be reduced by more than 200,000 won per household per year through self-generation of solar power. Social benefits are expected to reduce external environmental costs. The CO₂ emissions of the assumed model were calculated to be 39.5% lower than the diesel model and 1.5% lower than the supplier-only MG model. Therefore, the MG business model with consumer participation proposed in this study is expected to be an efficient alternative to renewable energy MG conversion in domestic islands, and is meaningful as an energy plan that improves the benefits of local residents.
Algorithm for environmental risk assessment of cosmetics to reduce their environmental impact

Cosmetics, especially rinse-off personal care products (PCPs), such as shampoo, facial cleanser, and body wash, are composed of various chemicals and are one of the sources of chemicals released into aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, the cosmetic industry strives to reduce the impact of their products on the aquatic environment. In this study, we proposed an algorithm based on persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity (PBT) for the environmental risk assessment of cosmetics. PBT features are generally used in the evaluation of the environmental impact of chemicals. Based on the PBT assessment, it is possible to predict the short- and long-term effects of chemicals on the environment. Our algorithm derives substance and product scores from PBT features, allowing for the risk assessment of each ingredient in the product. Furthermore, we proposed a criterion for the environmental impact grade through which each component can be classified. We intend to use this grade and factors determined through the algorithm to manufacture products with low environmental impact.

The survival and growth of epithelial cells depends on adhesion to the extracellular matrix. An adhesion signal may regulate the initiation of differentiation, since epidermal keratinocytes differentiate as they leave the basement membrane. A metabolically dead cornified cell envelope is the end point of epidermal differentiation so that this process may be viewed as a specialized form of programmed cell death. In order to investigate the precise cellular signaling events leading to terminal differentiation of keratinocytes, we have utilized HaCaT cells to monitor the biological consequences of Ca²? stimulation and numerous downstream signaling pathways, including activation of the extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK) pathway and activation of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K). The results presented in this study show that Ca²? function as potent agents for the differentiation of HaCaT keratinocytes, and this differentiation depends on the activation of ERK, Protein kinase B (PKB) and p70 ribosomal protein S6 kinase (p70S6K). Finally, the results show that the expression of Activator protein 1 (AP-1; c-Jun and c-Fos) increased following Ca²?-mediated differentiation of HaCaT cells, suggesting that ERK-mediated AP-1 expression is critical for initiating the terminal differentiation of keratinocytes.
