Growth hormone and receptor gene mutations in Chinese Banna miniature pig

        Deng, J.Z.,Hao, L.L.,Li, M.T.,Lang, S.,Zeng, Y.Z.,Liu, S.C.,Zhang, Y.L. The Korean Society for Integrative Biology 2011 Animal cells and systems Vol.15 No.4

The Banna miniature pig (BNMP) is a representative miniature pig breed in China. Even though BNMP dwarfism is obvious, its underlying causative mutations remain unknown. In this study, the BNMP and Large White pig (LWP) serum growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) levels were detected by ELISA and compared. BNMP serum IGF-1 levels were significantly lower than LWP levels (P<0.05). The miniature condition may arise from mutations in the GH and GH receptor (GHR) genes. Therefore, GH and GHR cDNA from the BNMP were cloned into a pMD18-T vector by RT-PCR using the total RNA obtained from the BNMP's pituitary and liver tissues. Sequencing results indicated that the open reading frame of the BNMP GH gene is composed of a 26-residue signal peptide and a 191-residue mature peptide. The coding sequence of the BNMP GHR gene contained 639 amino acids, including a signal peptide that is 18 amino acids long. Two amino acid substitutions, A09V and R22Q, were found in the signal peptide of the GH gene. Additionally, the S104P mutation was found in the BNMP's mature GH protein. Four mutations in the cytoplasmic domain of GHR may influence the downstream signal transduction of GHR, which needs further experimental evidence.

      • Theoretical and experimental determination of optical and magneto-optical properties of LuFe₂single crystal

        Hong, S,Zollner, S,Lynch, D.W,Canfield, P.C,Lee, S.J,Lange, R.J,Harmon, B.N,Panchula, A.F 公州大學校 基礎科學硏究所 1998 自然科學硏究 Vol.7 No.-

We have studied the diagonal and off-diagonal optical conductivity of a LuFe2 single crystal grown by the flux method. Using spectroscopic ellipsometry we have measured the dielectric function from 1.5 to 5.5 eV. The magneto-optical parameters (Kerr rotation and ellipticity) from 1.4 to 4.0 eV were obtained using a magneto-optical polar Kerr spectrometer at temperatures between 7 and 295 K and applied magnetic fields up to 1.2T which fully saturates the magnetic moment of LuFe2. We describe the apparatus and evaluate the off-diagonal conductivity components from the data. Theoretical calculations of optical conductivities and magneto-optical parameters were performed using the tight binding-linear muffin tin orbitals method within the local spin density approximation. When lifetime broadening is included, the calculations agree well with the experimental data.

Implementation and Performance Evaluation of a Firm's Green Supply Chain Management under Uncertainty

Lin, Yuanhsu,Tseng, Ming-Lang,Chiu, Anthony S.F.,Wang, Ray Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers 2014 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.13 No.1

Evaluation of the implementation and performance of a firm's green supply chain management (GSCM) is an ongoing process. Balanced scorecard is a multi-criteria evaluation concept that highlights implementation and performance measures. The literature on the framework is abundant literature but scarce on how to build a hierarchical framework under uncertainty with dependence relations. Hence, this study proposes a hybrid approach, which includes applied interpretive structural modeling to build a hierarchical structure and uses the analytic network process to analyze the dependence relations. Additionally, this study applies the fuzzy set theory to determine linguistic preferences. Twenty dependence criteria are evaluated for a GSCM implemented firm in Taiwan. The result shows that the financial aspect and life cycle assessment are the most important performance and weighted criteria.

      • Resonances in QCD

<P>We report on the EMMI Rapid Reaction Task Force meeting 'Resonances in QCD', which took place at GSI October 12-14,2015. A group of 26 people met to discuss the physics of resonances in QCD. The aim of the meeting was defined by the following three key questions: What is needed to understand the physics of resonances in QCD? Where does QCD lead us to expect resonances with exotic quantum numbers? What experimental efforts are required to arrive at a coherent picture? For light mesons and baryons only those with up, down and strange quark content were considered. For heavy-light and heavy-heavy meson systems, those with charm quarks were the focus. This document summarizes the discussions by the participants, which in turn led to the coherent conclusions we present here. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.</P>

Collective Force Regulation in Anti-parallel Microtubule Gliding by Dimeric Kif15 Kinesin Motors

        Reinemann, Dana N.,Sturgill, Emma G.,Das, Dibyendu Kumar,Degen, Miriam Steiner,,,s, Zsuzsanna,Hwang, Wonmuk,Ohi, Ryoma,Lang, Matthew J. Elsevier 2017 Current biology Vol.27 No.18

<P><B>Summary</B></P> <P>During cell division, the mitotic kinesin-5 Eg5 generates most of the force required to separate centrosomes during spindle assembly. However, Kif15, another mitotic kinesin, can replace Eg5 function, permitting mammalian cells to acquire resistance to Eg5 poisons. Unlike Eg5, the mechanism by which Kif15 generates centrosome separation forces is unknown. Here we investigated the mechanical properties and force generation capacity of Kif15 at the single-molecule level using optical tweezers. We found that the non-motor microtubule-binding tail domain interacts with the microtubule’s E-hook tail with a rupture force higher than the stall force of the motor. This allows Kif15 dimers to productively and efficiently generate forces that could potentially slide microtubules apart. Using an in vitro optical trapping and fluorescence assay, we found that Kif15 slides anti-parallel microtubules apart with gradual force buildup while parallel microtubule bundles remain stationary with a small amount of antagonizing force generated. A stochastic simulation shows the essential role of Kif15’s tail domain for load storage within the Kif15-microtubule system. These results suggest a mechanism for how Kif15 rescues bipolar spindle assembly.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Kif15 transports microtubules in bundles through motor and non-motor coordination </LI> <LI> Kif15’s non-motor microtubule-binding site (Coil-1) is stronger than stall force </LI> <LI> Kif15 generates force in anti-parallel bundles and has a force-feedback mechanism </LI> <LI> Coil-1 tethering is needed for the force ramp and plateau in anti-parallel bundles </LI> </UL> </P>

Membrane for the Removal of Volatile Organic Compounds from Air

        Deng, S.,Lang, K.,Wang, J.,Tremblay, A.,Matsuura, T. The Membrane Society of Korea 1997 멤브레인 Vol.7 No.1

Porous asymmetric membranes were prepared from polyetherimide polymer by the phase-inversion technique under different conditions. The performance of the membranes was tested for the removal of acetone vapour from nitrogen. A membrane which showed a high acetone permeability and a high selectivity was chosen and tested further for the separation of different organic vapours from nitrogen. The molecular structure of organic vapours and the selectivity were correlated. A strong correlation was also found between the chromatographic retention time of the organic vapour and the selectivity. These experimental results led to the conclusion that the sorption is the factor governing the separation of volatile organic compounds from nitrogen. A membrane was also prepared by coating the surface of a porous polyetherimide membrane with silicone rubber. The performance of membranes with and without silicone rubber coating was compared.
