      • Tourism in Maldives

        S,C,Bagri,S,K,Gupta,Reena Sharma 세계문화관광학회 2009 Conference Proceedings Vol.10 No.0

The paper includes the growth of tourism since years in Maldives. The paper examines tourist development in Maldives. This will include the tourism indicators and impacts of tourism economically, socially and culturally. Although social/cultural impacts from coastal tourism development have been widely recognized in a great number of cases, it is relatively, difficult to develop technical criteria, for evaluating these impacts in quantitative terms. According to the Ministry of Tourism website, the emergence of tourism in 1972 transformed the economy of the Maldives, moving rapidly from the dependence on the fisheries sector to the tourism sector. Just in three and a half decades, the industry has become the main source of income and livelihood of the people of the Maldives. Tourism is also the country's biggest foreign currency earner and the single largest contributor to the GDP. Today, there are 89 resorts in the Maldives with a bed capacity of over 17,000, providing world class facilities for tourists whose annual arrival figure exceeds 600,000.

Outcomes of Surgical Treatment for Patients With Mild Scoliosis and AgeAppropriate Sagittal Alignment With Minimum 2-Year Follow-up

        Justin K. Scheer,Justin S. Smith,Peter G. Passias,Han Jo Kim,Shay Bess,Douglas C. Burton,Eric O. Klineberg,Virginie Lafage,Munish Gupta,Christopher P. Ames 대한척추신경외과학회 2023 Neurospine Vol.20 No.3

Objective: The goal of this study was to determine if patients with mild scoliosis and ageappropriate sagittal alignment have favorable outcomes following surgical correction. Methods: Retrospective review of a prospective, multicenter adult spinal deformity database. Inclusion criteria: operative patients age ≥18 years, and preoperative pelvic tilt, mismatch between pelvic incidence and lumbar lordosis (PI–LL), and C7 sagittal vertical axis all within established age-adjusted thresholds with minimum 2-year follow-up. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scores: Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), 36-item Short Form health survey (SF-36), Scoliosis Research Society-22R (SRS22R), back/leg pain Numerical Rating Scale and minimum clinically important difference (MCID)/substantial clinical benefit (SCB). Two-year and preoperative HRQoL radiographic data were compared. Patients with mild scoliosis (Mild Scoli, Max coronal Cobb 10°–30°) were compared to those with larger curves (Scoli). Results: One hundred fifty-one patients included from 667 operative patients (82.8% women; average age, 56.4 ± 16.2 years). Forty-two patients (27.8%) included in Mild Scoli group. Mild Scoli group had significantly worse baseline leg pain, ODI, and physical composite scores (p < 0.02). Mean 2-year maximum coronal Cobb angle was significantly improved compared to baseline (p < 0.001). All 2-year HRQoL measures were significantly improved compared to (p < 0.001) except mental composite score, SRS activity and SRS mental for the Mild Scoli group (p > 0.05). From the mild Scoli group, 36%–74% met either MCID or SCB for the HRQoL measures. Sixty-four point three percent had minimum 1 complication, 28.6% had a major complication, 35.7% had reoperation. Conclusion: Mild scoliosis patients with age-appropriate sagittal alignment benefit from surgical correction, decompression, and stabilization at 2 years postoperative despite having a high complication rate.

Interactions of methylated $\beta$-cyclodextrin and hydrophobically modified alkali-soluble emulsion (HASE) polymers: a rheological study

        Gupta, R.K.,Tam, K.C.,Ong, S.H.,Jenkins, R.D. The Korean Society of Rheology 2000 Korea-Australia rheology journal Vol.12 No.2

The interactions between methylated $\beta$-cyclodextrin (CD) and hydrophobically modified alkali-soluble associative polymers (HASE) were examined by a rheological technique. The effect of "capping" of hydrophobes by methylated $\beta$-cyclodextrin on the viscosity and modulus was evaluated. Model HASE polymers with $C_1$to $C_{20}$ alkyl hydrophobic groups ethoxylated with~10 moles of ethylene-oxide (EO 10) and at concentrations up to 3 wt% were examined. With the addition of methylated $\beta$-CD, the steady shear viscosity profiles shift from a Newtonian profile to one that display a shear-thinning characteristic. Significant "capping" of the hydrophobes occurs for HASE polymers with $C_{l2}$, $C_{16}$ and $C_{20}$ hydrophobes as reflected by the large reduction in the viscosity. However, the steady shear viscosity remains constant when the concentration of $\beta$-CD exceeds 1 wt%, suggesting that $\beta$-CD is not able to fully encapsulate the hydrophobes of the HASE polymer. The temperature variation plots indicate that the activation energy of the HASE-EO10-$C_{20}$ system and $\beta$-CD is dependent on the magnitude of the applied shear stress. These results further reinforce the hypothesis that $\beta$-CD is not able to completely remove all the hydrophobic associations.phobic associations.

Radiative and seesaw threshold corrections to the S 3 symmetric neutrino mass matrix

        Gupta, Shivani,Kim, C.S.,Sharma, Pankaj North-Holland Pub. Co 2015 Physics letters. Section B Vol.740 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We systematically analyze the radiative corrections to the S 3 symmetric neutrino mass matrix at high energy scale, say the GUT scale, in the charged lepton basis. There are significant corrections to the neutrino parameters both in the Standard Model (SM) and Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with large tan ⁡ β , when the renormalization group evolution (RGE) and seesaw threshold effects are taken into consideration. We find that in the SM all three mixing angles and atmospheric mass squared difference are simultaneously obtained in their current 3<I>σ</I> ranges at the electroweak scale. However, the solar mass squared difference is found to be larger than its allowed 3<I>σ</I> range at the low scale in this case. There are significant contributions to neutrino masses and mixing angles in the MSSM with large tan ⁡ β from the RGEs even in the absence of seesaw threshold corrections. However, we find that the mass squared differences and the mixing angles are simultaneously obtained in their current 3<I>σ</I> ranges at low energy when the seesaw threshold effects are also taken into account in the MSSM with large tan ⁡ β .</P>

Photo-physics of PTB7, PCBM and ICBA based ternary solar cells

        Sharma, R.,Lee, H.,Gupta, V.,Kim, H.,Kumar, M.,Sharma, C.,Chand, S.,Yoo, S.,Gupta, D. Elsevier Science 2016 Organic Electronics Vol.34 No.-

<P>Indene-C(60)bisadduct (ICBA) is one of the rare acceptors which can supersede commonly used phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM70) in enhancing the performance of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells owing to its shallower lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level. However, ICBA tends to decrease the photocurrent for most of the low band-gap polymers synthesized to date. Here we examine the interaction of ICBA with the one of the popular low band-gap polymers poly[[4,8-bis[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl][3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl)carbonyl]thieno[3,4-b]thio-phenediyl]] (PTB7), at femtosecond level, to explore key dynamics governing the operation of BHJ cells involving ICBA. The photo-physics of binary and ternary systems based on PTB7 coupled with PCBM70 and/or ICBA are studied by means of transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and supported by morphology analysis. Our study suggests that both inefficient charge-separation and poor charge transport of ICBA is responsible for relatively low photocurrent generation. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. CYTOGENETIC EFFECTS OF ORGANOPHOSPHATE PESTICIDES ON GOAT LYMPHOCYTES IN CULTURE

Gupta, S.C.,Sahal, R.,Gupta, N. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1996 Animal Bioscience Vol.9 No.4

Cytogenetic effects of malathion and parathion, the organophosphorus pesticides were studied on goat lymphocytes in culture. The mitotic indices (% of blast cells + cells at metaphase) of goat lymphocytes showed corresponding decrease with the increase in dose of pesticides. Malathion had significant effect only at $150{\mu}g/ml$ or higher dosages while, parathion caused antimitotic effects even at the lowest dose ($5{\mu}g/ml$) tested. The clastogenic effects of malathion were significant ($p{\leq}0.05$) at $100{\mu}g/ml$. In higher doses, the effects were highly significant ($p{\leq}0.01$). The frequency of metaphase plates with chromosomal abnormalities were highest (22.0%) at $200{\mu}g/ml$. The incidences of chromosomal abnormalities were significant ($p{\leq}0.05$) in parathion treated series even at $5{\mu}g/ml$ dose level. At $10{\mu}g/ml$ or higher dose levels the difference between treatment groups and controls were more pronounced ($p{\leq}0.01$). Various types of chromosomal abnormalities were encountered in goat lymphocytes treated by malathion and parathion. However, the incidence of gaps, breaks, acentric fragments, dicentric chromosomes were higher than other types of structural and numerical abnormalities.

Developmental Ability of Bovine Embryos Nuclear Transferred with Frozen-thawed or Cooled Donor Cells

        Hong, S.B.,Uhm, S.J.,Lee, H.Y.,Park, C.Y.,Gupta, M.K.,Chung, B.H.,Chung, K.S.,Lee, H.T. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2005 Animal Bioscience Vol.18 No.9

This study was designed to investigate the in vitro developmental ability and apoptosis of bovine embryos nucleartransferred (NT) with frozen-thawed or cooled donor cells. Cultured adult bovine ear cells were used as donor cells after sub-culturing to confluence (CC), cooling to 4$^{\circ}C$ for 48 h, or freezing-thawing (FT). Apoptotic cells in blastocysts were evaluated for apoptosis by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) method. Fusion, cleavage and blastocyst rates were 69.0 (167/242), 68.8 (115/167), and 29.9 (50/167) with CC cells, 70.4 (88/125), 69.3 (61/88), and 29.6 (26/88) with cooled cells and 66.1 (117/177), 70.1 (82/117), and 13.7 (16/117) with FT cells, respectively. Blastocyst rates of NT embryos derived from FT cells were significantly lower than those from CC or cooled cells (p<0.05). In addition, NT blastocysts produced by using FT cells showed significantly higher apoptosis rates (6.4${\pm}$4.0%) than those produced by CC (2.8${\pm}$1.7%) or cooled (2.3${\pm}$1.3%) cells. However, cooling of donor cells had no significant adverse effect on blastocyst rate as well as apoptosis rate. Therefore, our results suggest that cooled cells may be used as an alternative to freshly cultured confluent culture cells, as donor cells, for the production of Somatic nuclear cloned cattle.

Analysis of a discrete-time queue with load dependent service under discrete-time Markovian arrival process

        U.C. Gupta,S.K. Samanta,V. Goswami 한국통계학회 2014 Journal of the Korean Statistical Society Vol.43 No.4

In the study of normal queueing systems, the server’s average service times are generallyassumed to be constant. However, in numerous applications this assumption may notbe valid. To prevent congestion in overload control telecommunication networks, thetransmission rates vary depending on the number of packets waiting in the queue. Astraffics in telecommunication networks are of bursty nature and correlated, we assumethat arrivals follow the discrete-time Markovian arrival process. This paper analyzes aqueueing model in which the server changes its service times (rates) only at the beginningof service depending on the number of customers waiting in the queue. We obtain thesteady-state probabilities at various epochs and some performance measures. In addition, varieties of numerical results are discussed to display the effect of the system parameterson the performance measures.

Subfertility in Males: An Important Cause of Bull Disposal in Bovines

        Mukhopadhyay, C.S.,Gupta, A.K.,Yadav, B.R.,Khate, K.,Raina, V.S.,Mohanty, T.K.,Dubey, P.P. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2010 Animal Bioscience Vol.23 No.4

The study had two objectives, namely, to estimate the andrological disorders leading to disposal of Karan Fries (KF), Sahiwal cattle and Murrah buffalo bulls and to study the effect of various factors (species/breeds, season of birth and period of birth) on male reproductive parameters. Records on occurrence of subfertility problems and disposal pattern of bulls maintained at the National Dairy Research Institute herd were collected for 15 years (1991 to 2005). Percentage of bulls producing freezable semen was less in the crossbred cattle (58.46%) as compared to Sahiwal (81.69%) and Murrah bulls (81.05%). Various subfertility traits like poor libido and unacceptable seminal profile were found to be the significant reasons (p<0.01) for culling of the breeding bulls. Inadequate sex drive was the main contributing factor for bull disposal in Sahiwal (22.55%) and Murrah bulls (15.12%) whereas poor semen quality and freezability were most frequently observed in KF bulls (24.29 and 7.29 percent, respectively). Least squares analyses of different male reproductive parameters showed that species/breeds had significant effect (p<0.05) on all traits except for frozen semen production periods (FSPP). Periods of birth were significantly different (p<0.05) for all traits except for semen volume. Age at first semen collection (AFSC), age at first semen freezing (AFSF) and age at disposal (AD) were highest in Murrah, while frozen semen production period (FSPP) and semen production period (SPP) were highest in KF and lowest in Sahiwal. The age at first semen donation and breeding period could be reduced by introducing the bulls to training at an early age. These results revealed a declining trend in AFSC, AFSF, FSPP, SPP and AD, thereby indicating an improvement in reproductive performance over the years. The age at first semen donation in bovines can be reduced by introducing the young male calves to training at an early age, which could increase the dosage of semen obtained from each male.
