Pulmonary Embolism after Core Decompression of the Femoral Head Using Injectable Bone Graft Substitute: A Case Report

        ( Oriol Pujol ),( Marius Aguirre ),( Alberto Gargallo ),( Maria-luz Uria ),( Luis Riera ),( Daniel Pacha ) 대한고관절학회 2021 Hip and Pelvis Vol.33 No.3

The authors report a rare complication regarding the case of an 18-year-old female with bilateral osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) secondary to the treatment and hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) of an acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The patient underwent a bilateral necrotic bone debridement and core decompression (CD) surgery with injectable synthetic bone graft, which unfortunately caused a pulmonary injectable bone graft substitute embolism.

Comparative biogeography of the congener lilies Lilium distichum and Lilium tsingtauense in Korea

        Chung, M.Y.,Lopez-Pujol, J.,Chung, M.G. G. Fischer Verlag 2014 FLORA -JENA- Vol.209 No.8

The main Korean mountain range (the so-called ''Baekdudaegan''), which stretches from north to south across most of the Peninsula, has been thought to harbor glacial refugia for boreal and temperate plant species, where they likely found relatively stable habitats and maintained large population sizes. Under this scenario, high levels of genetic variation for plant populations can be anticipated. To test this hypothesis, we examined levels of allozyme diversity in the boreal herb Lilium distichum, which in Korea occurs largely along the Baekdudaegan and in its closely related congener L. tsingtauense, a temperate species that can occur from the coastal islands to high-altitude mountains in the Baekdudaegan. As expected, L. distichum harbored high levels of genetic variation within populations, and we found significant correlations between percentage of polymorphic loci (and allelic richness) and elevation. For L. tsingtauense we found moderate genetic variation, with its populations showing a significantly positive correlation between intra-population expected heterozygosity and elevation. Our results suggest that populations/species that occur within or near the main ridge of the Baekdudaegan probably endured the glacial periods in macrorefugia, whereas those populations/species located at low elevations (far away from mid- and high-elevation mountains) did it in microrefugia. Palaeodistribution modelling is in agreement with genetic data, indicating that the Baekdudaegan was suitable habitat for both species during the glacial (LGM) and interglacial periods (like the present). This study as well as the data from other studies compiled here provides strong evidence that the Baekdudaegan was a major refugial area for the East Asian flora throughout the Quaternary and, thus, meriting high priority for conservation biogeography.

Vibration control of hysteretic base-isolated structures: an LMI approach

Francesc Pozo,Gisela Pujol,Leonardo Acho 국제구조공학회 2016 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.17 No.2

Seismic isolation systems are essentially designed to preserve structural safety, prevent occupants injury and properties damage. An active saturated LMI-based control design is proposed to attenuate seismic disturbances in base-isolated structures under saturation actuators. Using a mathematical model of an eight-storied building structure, an active control algorithm is designed. Performance evaluation of the controller is carried out in a simplified model version of a benchmark building system, which is recognized as a state-of-the-art model for numerical experiments of structures under seismic perturbations. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is robust with respect to model and seismic perturbations. Finally, the performance indices show that the proposed controller behaves satisfactorily and with a reasonable control effort.

      • Genetic homogeneity between Korean and Japanese populations of the broad-leaved evergreen tree Machilus thunbergii (Lauraceae): A massive post-glacial immigration through the Korea Strait or something else?

Chung, M.Y.,Lopez-Pujol, J.,Chung, M.G. Pergamon Press ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2014 Biochemical systematics and ecology Vol.53 No.-

The warm-temperate vegetation of Korea, currently limited to southern coastal areas, shifted during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) towards glacial refugia, putatively located in southern Japan. We hypothesized two scenarios of post-glacial re-colonization of warm-temperate species in relation to current levels of genetic diversity within their populations. If extant Korean populations originated from a single source (a single glacial refugium), we expect significantly lower levels of genetic diversity relative to those from Japan due to founder effects. Alternatively, if they were derived from multiple source populations, levels of genetic diversity within Korean populations will not be significantly reduced compared to those of Japanese ones. To test which of these scenarios is more likely, we investigated the patterns of genetic diversity in 14 populations (seven from southern Korea and seven from southern Japan) of the broad-leaved evergreen tree Machilus thunbergii, employing 11 allozyme loci. High levels of genetic variation in M. thunbergii were found both in southern Korea and southern Japan, with a considerable genetic homogeneity not only between the two regions but also between populations within the two regions. These results suggest a pattern of re-colonization after the LGM fitting the second scenario (immigration from multiple refugia), probably through multiple waves and/or with large founder populations.

        Emission properties of hydrothermal Yb3 + , Er3 + and Yb3 + , Tm3 + -codoped Lu2O3 nanorods: upconversion, cathodoluminescence and assessment of waveguide behavior

<P>Yb3 + and Ln3 + (Ln3 + = Er3 + or Tm3 + ) codoped Lu2O3 nanorods with cubic <img SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0957-4484/22/7/075205/nano368878ieqn1.gif' ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='Ia\bar 3 '/> symmetry have been prepared by low temperature hydrothermal procedures, and their luminescence properties and waveguide behavior analyzed by means of scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM). Room temperature upconversion (UC) under excitation at 980 nm and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra were studied as a function of the Yb + concentration in the prepared nanorods. UC spectra revealed the strong development of <img SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0957-4484/22/7/075205/nano368878ieqn2.gif' ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='\mathrm {Er}^{3+}\,^{4}\mathrm {F}_{9/2}\to {}^4\mathrm {I}_{15/2} '/> (red) and <img SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0957-4484/22/7/075205/nano368878ieqn3.gif' ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='\mathrm {Tm}^{3+}\,{}^{1}\mathrm {G}_{4} \to {}^{3}\mathrm {H}_{6} '/> (blue) bands, which became the pre-eminent and even unique emissions for corresponding nanorods with the higher Yb3 + concentration. Favored by the presence of large phonons in current nanorods, UC mechanisms that privilege the population of 4F9/2 and 1G4 emitting levels through phonon-assisted energy transfer and non-radiative relaxations account for these observed UC luminescence features. CL spectra show much more moderate development of the intensity ratio between the <img SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0957-4484/22/7/075205/nano368878ieqn2.gif' ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='\mathrm {Er}^{3+}\, {}^{4}\mathrm {F}_{9/2} \to {}^4\mathrm {I}_{15/2} '/> (red) and 2H11/2, <img SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0957-4484/22/7/075205/nano368878ieqn4.gif' ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='^{4}\mathrm {S}_{3/2}\to {}^{4}\mathrm {I}_{15/2} '/> (green) emissions with the increase in the Yb3 + content, while for Yb3 + , Tm3 + -codoped Lu2O3 nanorods the dominant CL emission is <img SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0957-4484/22/7/075205/nano368878ieqn5.gif' ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='\mathrm {Tm}^{3+}\,{}^{1}\mathrm {D}_{2}\to {}^{3}\mathrm {F}_{4} '/> (deep-blue). Uniform light emission along Yb3 + , Er3 + -codoped Lu2O3 rods has been observed by using SNOM photoluminescence images; however, the rods seem to be too thin for propagation of light. </P>

Notes on genetic variation in Sedum sarmentosum (Crassulaceae): Implications for the origin of southern Korean populations

        정미윤,Jordi López-Pujol,정명기 한국식물분류학회 2016 식물 분류학회지 Vol.46 No.4

The succulent herbaceous perennial Sedum sarmentosum commonly grows in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. It is a species native to China, most likely introduced into Korea due to its edible and medicinal uses. If plants were introduced from a single source, we would expect no or low levels of genetic variation in Korean populations. Alternatively, if plants were introduced from multiple sources, we would expect, in contrast, high levels of genetic diversity. To test which is more likely, we surveyed the degree of allozyme variation in ten populations of this species from southern Korea. We found that S. sarmentosum was monomorphic at all fifteen allozyme loci. However, two congeners (S. polytrichoides and S. kamtschaticum) and two related species (Hylotelephium ussuriense and H. verticillatum) maintain moderate to high levels of genetic diversity (He = 0.144, 0.203, 0.201, and 0.204, respectively). We suggest that southern Korean populations of S. sarmentosum likely descended from a single introduction of a few plants and then became naturalized exclusively via vegetative spreading (as plants in Korea, but also as occurs in other parts of its native and naturalized range, are sterile).

Is the Baekdudaegan “"the Southern Appalachians of the East”"? A comparison between these mountain systems, focusing on their role as glacial refugia

        정미윤,Jordi López-Pujol,정명기 한국식물분류학회 2016 식물 분류학회지 Vol.46 No.4

Based on genetic studies and palaeoecological surveys, the main Korean mountain range, the socalled "Baekdudaegan" (BDDG), has been recently suggested to be a major glacial refugium at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) for the boreal and temperate flora of northeastern Asia. On the basis of its shared role as a glacial refugium, and on a series of striking similarities in floristic richness and orographic features, the BDDG would constitute a sort of “"eastern counterpart”" of the Southern Appalachians. Given its floristic, biogeographic, and cultural value, the BDDG merits high priority for conservation.

Polyploidy in Lilium lancifolium: Evidence of autotriploidy and no niche divergence between diploid and triploid cytotypes in their native ranges

        Chung, M.Y.,Lopez-Pujol, J.,Chung, J.M.,Kim, K.J.,Park, S.J.,Chung, M.G. G. Fischer Verlag 2015 FLORA -JENA- Vol.213 No.-

Lilium lancifolium, the tiger lily, constitutes a polyploid complex with both diploids (reproduced by seeds and bulbils) and triploids (propagated exclusively via bulbils). An autopolyploid origin for the triploid forms has been previously suggested based on classical cytogenetics, chromosome mapping techniques, ecological data, and geographic distribution in their native range (Korea and the Japanese Tsushima Island). Using 13 allozyme loci, we comparatively assessed clonal structure and levels of genetic diversity in four diploid and 11 triploid populations in South Korea to test the autopolyploid origin of the triploid cytotype and to infer which seedling recruitment strategy is operating within the diploid populations. We also employed ecological niche modeling and multivariate analysis to determine whether triploids of L. lancifolium occupy different and broader niches to those of diploids in Korea and Tsushima Island. The diploids harbored higher levels of within-population genetic diversity than triploids, and allele profiles found in triploids were exactly subsets of those in diploids. Repeated seedling recruitment was inferred for the diploids, whereas all the studied triploid populations were monoclonal since there is no seedling (sexual) recruitment. Although we found no niche divergence between cytotypes of L. lancifolium, the triploids have a broader niche breadth. Genetic data further confirm the autotriploid origin of L. lancifolium, and the lack of a clear, strong evidence for niche divergence between cytotypes of L. lancifolium supports the view that ecological differentiation is not a pre-requisite for the establishment of new polyploid lineages.
