      • WebCrawler: Finding what people want

Pinkerton, Brian University of Washington 2000 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

WebCrawler, the first comprehensive full-text search engine for the World-Wide Web, has played a fundamental role in making the Web easier to use for millions of people. Its invention and subsequent evolution, spanning a three-year period, helped fuel the Web's growth by creating a new way of navigating hypertext. Before search engines like WebCrawler, users found Web documents by following hypertext links from one document to another. When the Web was small and its documents shared the same fundamental purpose, users could find documents with relative ease. However, the Web quickly grew to millions of pages making navigation difficult. WebCrawler assists users in their Web navigation by automating the task of link traversal, creating a searchable index of the web, and fulfilling searchers' queries from the index. To use WebCrawler, a user issues a query to a pre-computed index, quickly retrieving a list of documents that match the query. This dissertation describes WebCrawler's scientific contributions: a method for choosing a subset of the Web to index; an approach to creating a search service that is easy to use; a new way to rank search results that can generate highly effective results for both naive and expert searchers; and an architecture for the service that has effectively handled a three-order-of-magnitude increase in load. This dissertation also describes how WebCrawler evolved to accommodate the extraordinary growth of the Web. This growth affected WebCrawler not only by increasing the size and scope of its index, but also by increasing the demand for its service. Each of WebCrawler's components had to change to accommodate this growth: the crawler had to download more documents, the full-text index had to become more efficient at storing and finding those documents, and the service had to accommodate heavier demand. Such changes were not only related to scale, however: the evolving nature of the Web meant that functional changes were necessary, too, such as the ability to handle naive queries from searchers.

      • The development of new ruthenium-catalyzed reactions and a new strategy for cyclopentenone synthesis

Pinkerton, Anthony Bruce Stanford University 2001 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

A number of new ruthenium catalyzed carbon-carbon bond forming reactions have been developed. Cyclopentadienyl ruthenium (II) complexes catalyze the addition of a halide, an alkyne and an enone to form vinyl halides in a three component coupling process. Depending on the conditions utilized, either the Z or E isomer can be formed selectively. If sterically bulky alkynes are used, completely selective formation of the Z isomer of the vinyl halide is seen. When an aldehyde is added to the reaction mixture, a four component coupling is achieved, wherein a highly functionalized aldol adduct is obtained with control of both olefin selectivity and diastereoselectivity in the aldol reaction. The synthetic utility of the vinyl halides is demonstrated by their use as cross coupling partners in Suzuki-type reactions, as synthons for α-hydroxy ketones via epoxidation or dihydroxylation, or as precursors to 2,3-disubstituted cyclopentenones via a Nozaki-Kishi reaction followed by an oxidative rearrangement. The efficiency of this strategy for cyclopentenone synthesis is demonstrated by the total syntheses of tetrahydrodicranenone B, an antimicrobial fatty acid (in 7 linear steps and 14% overall yield), rosaprostol, an antiulcer drug (in 7 linear steps and 31% overall yield) and a potent COX-2 inhibitor (in 5 linear steps and 30% overall yield). Cyclopentadienyl ruthenium (II) complexes also catalyze the addition of an allene and an enone to form 1,3-dimes in a two component coupling. When allenes bearing a hydroxyl group juxtaposed 4 or 5 carbons from the internal terminus of the allene are used, cyclic ethers are obtained. A wide variety of bicyclic ethers can also be formed from this reaction. When strong Lewis acid cocatalysts are added, secondary amines can function as nucleophiles, giving. both pyrrolidine and piperidine products.

      • Learning the culture of natural family living through participation in an online community of practice

Pinkerton, Carolyn M University of Virginia 2010 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

The purpose of this study was to examine how mothers participate in an online community, MotheringDotCommunity (MDC), to learn the culture of natural family living (NFL) through an ethnographic case study. Natural family living (NFL) is a lifestyle that promotes holistic well-being. Families focus on nurturing their physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Attachment parenting (AP) is part of NFL. In AP, parents quickly and consistently respond to their children's needs in order to promote a strong parent-child attachment; this involves practices such as always responding to a child's cries, keeping children within close proximity, and practicing gentle discipline. MDC is an online forum where women can both provide and receive information and support regarding NFL. Data were collected through daily online observations of MDC, archived messages, and interviews with 12 MDC participants. In addition, four MDC member profiles were created in order to highlight the learning process and patterns of activity that occur within the online community. Data were analyzed using the framework of communities of practice, the idea that people learn a practice by interacting within a community. The findings revealed three major themes: (1) by creating and sharing information and receiving community support, MDC members are empowered and encouraged to challenge institutions, (2) through their participation at MDC, women both learn and adapt their identities as NFL mothers, and (3) MDC serves different roles for different members; for some members, MDC is a community of practice, while for others, the forum solely serves as an information resource.

      • Educational Leadership Model: An Historical Analysis of Arne Duncan (2001-2015) as Chief Executive Officer of the Chicago Public Schools and as Secretary of Education of the United States of America, and Impact of His Leadership Style on Implementation of Educational Initiatives

Pinkerton, M. Jodilyn Loyola University Chicago ProQuest Dissertations & 2020 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

This research is a historical examination of Arne Duncan’s leadership styles as Chief Education Officer of the Chicago Public Schools and as U.S. Secretary of Education. This analysis highlights the correlation between Ronald Heifetz’s Adaptive Leadership (2009) and Arne Duncan’s leadership style as he implements initiatives to expand educational opportunities for students in the Chicago Public Schools and his national reform initiatives to improve college readiness among high school graduates. This research also presents Arne Duncan’s challenges and successes in the implementation of the Renaissance 2010 program that closed 70 schools, Chicago Public Schools exit from the Consent Decree, the No Child Left Behind Act, the amendment of the NCLB Act called Every Student Succeeds Act, and the execution of the Race to the Top initiatives. The study concludes with reflections on Arne Duncan’s styles as a leader, so as to suggest effective leadership for future education administrators.
