This study aimed to measure the levels of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 1 (IL-1), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and nitrite/nitrate (NOx) in serum of dogs experimentally infected with Rangelia vitalii. Twelve female mongrel dogs were divided into 2 groups; group A (uninfected controls) composed by healthy dogs (n=5) and group B consisting of dogs inoculated with R. vitalii (n=7). Animals were monitored by blood smear examinations, which showed intraerythrocytic forms of the parasite on day 5 post-infection (PI). Blood samples were collected through the jugular vein on days 0, 10, and 20 PI to determine the serum levels of IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-1, IL-6, and NOx. Cytokines were assessed by ELISA quantitative sandwich technique, and NOx was measured by the modified Griess method. Cytokine levels (IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-1, and IL-6) were increased (P<0.01) in serum of infected animals. Serum levels of NOx were also increased on days 10 PI (P<0.01) and 20 PI (P<0.05) in infected animals. Therefore, the infection with R. vitalii causes an increase in proinflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide content. These alterations may be associated with host immune protection against the parasite.

There is a small group of patients with cerebral palsy who can be benefited by reconstructive surgery on the upper extremity. In cerebral palsy long standing muscle imbalance, which can be improved only by surgical treatment, may prevent a hand from reaching its full potential for function. This case is a 18 yrs old girl had a flexed wrist, swan neck deformity of the fingers and a clasped thumb. She was treated by surgical measure of the tenodesis of the flexor sublimis tendon at the proximal interphalangeal joints of the index; transference of flexor carpi radialis to abductor pollicis brevis: and myotomy of adductor pollicis. We obtained very good result without other complication.

Although genomic tools have proven to be very useful for plant breeding, most bread wheat breeding programs at developing countries still rely solely on phenotypic selection. Controversially, applied studies on this theme are gradually becoming scarce worldwide, especially the ones focusing on specifc traits, such as plant height and spike number. The present study aimed to depict the genetic efects of selecting for both decrease and increase of plant height and spike number on a set of Brazilian wheat populations at early segregating generations, bringing information for the development of efective breeding strategies. Five populations in F2 were subjected to fve selection criteria, including no selection. Eight agronomic traits were assayed. Plant height has shown the highest broad-sense heritability coefcients, selection diferentials, selection gain estimates, and real selection gains. On the other hand, the means for spike number for these parameters were low to moderate. Selection for these traits impacted on indirect selection gains for all other traits. Early selection for increasing both plant height and spike number per plant has positive efects on grain yield per plant and its components on the segregating populations assayed, according to selection gain estimates. Cystic Fibrosis: Clinical Phenotypes in Children and Adolescents

Purpose: The objective of this study was to describe the clinical phenotypes of children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF); and to assess the role of pancreatic insufficiency and neonatal screening in diagnosis.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, which included 77 patients attending a reference center of CF between 2014 and 2016. Epidemiological data, anthropometric measurements, and the presence of pulmonary, pancreatic, gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary manifestations were evaluated based on clinical data and complementary examinations.Results: Of the 77 patients, 51.9% were male, with a median age of 147 months (7.0-297.0 months), and the majority showed adequate nutritional status. The most common phenotype was pulmonary (92.2%), followed by pancreatic (87.0%), with pancreatic insufficiency in most cases. Gastrointestinal manifestation occurred in 46.8%, with constipation being the more common factor. Hepatobiliary disease occurred in 62.3% of patients. The group with pancreatic insufficiency was diagnosed earlier (5.0 months) when compared to the group with sufficiency (84.0 months) (p=0.01). The age of diagnosis was reduced following implementation of neonatal screening protocols for CF (6.0 months before vs. 3.0 months after, p=0.02).Conclusion: The pulmonary phenotype was the most common, although extrapulmonary manifestations were frequent and clinically relevant, and should mandate early detection and treatment. Neonatal screening for CF led to earlier diagnosis in patients with pancreatic failure, and therefore, should be adopted universally.
