In this study, silver (Ag)-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofiber photocatalysts were synthesized using electrospinning method. To understand the effect of Ag doping on the photocatalytic efficiencies, ZnO nanofibers were prepared with diff erent load- ing ratios (0, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0 at.% Ag). The synthesized nanofibers were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy techniques. The photocatalytic performances of the fibers were first evaluated by measuring the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) under the UV light irradiation. It was found that the amount of dopant ions has a crucial effect on the degradation process of MB. The results show that 0.5 at.% Ag dopant dosage is the ideal to achieve maximum catalytic efficiency against MB dye molecules with nearly complete decolorization just after 75 min UV light irradiation. During the degradation process, the substitutional incorporation of dopant ions provides better photocatalytic efficiency due to forming higher number of charge carriers and so delaying the recombination process. The recycling experiments for MB dye degradation were performed to determine the conservation of the catalytic efficiency and chemical stability of the nanofibers. To compare the photocatalytic efficiency of nanofibers against different dye molecules, the degradation performance of 0.5 at.% Ag-doped ZnO nanofibers was also experimentally examined by the measuring the photocatalytic degradation rates of various harmful organic dyes such as Rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene orange (MO) under the UV light irradiation. It was found that the photodegradation rates of RhB and MO synthetic dye solutions are determined as follows: ~ 66% and ~ 51% decomposition after 120 min UV light irradiation, respectively. A possible mechanism for the improvement of the photocatalytic performance of ZnO nanofibers by Ag loading is proposed.

We carried out a retrospective analysis of 74 patients who were presented to our center with histopathological diagnosis of primary gastro-intestinal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma between 1990 and 2001. All patients have been staged according to Lugano Staging System. For histopathological classification, International Working Formulation was applied. The treatment choice concerning the surgical or non-surgical management was decided by the initially acting physician. Treatment modalities were compared using the parameters of age, sex, histopathological results, stage, and the site of disease. Of the 74 patients, 31 werefemale and 43 were male, with a median age of 49 years (range 15-80). The stomach was the most common primary site and was seenin 51 of 74 patients (68.9%). The intermediate and high grade lymphomas constituted 91.9% of the all cases. In a median follow-up of 29 months (range 2-128), 20 out of 74 patients died. There was a three year overall survival rate in 65.4% of all patients. The three year overall survival rate was better in stage I and II1 patients who were treated with surgery plus chemotherapy (+/-RT) than those treated with chemotherapy alone (93.7% vs. 55.6%, p 0.05). The stage and presence of B symptoms affected the disease free survival and overall survival significantly, but the histopathologic grade only affected the overall survival. On the basis of these results, we suggest that surgicalresection is necessary before chemotherapy in early stage (stage I and II1) patients with gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin's lymphomas because of the significant survival advantage it would bring to the patient.
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Associated with Brucellosis in Two Patients with Fever and Pancytopenia

Brucellosis is a disease involving the lymphoproliferative system, which may lead to changes in the hematological parameters; however, pancytopenia is a rare finding. However, malignant diseases in association with brucellosis are rarely the cause of pancytopenia. Herein, two cases with fever and pancytopenia, diagnosed as simultaneous acute lymphoblastic leukemia and brucellosis are presented. Anti-leukemic therapy and brucellosis treatment were administered simultaneously, and normal blood parameters obtained. The first patient is in complete remission; the other recovered from the brucellosis, but later died due to a leukemic relapse.

The present study aimed to determine the effect of oral ${\beta}$-glucan on mucositis and leukopenia in 62 consecutive patients with colorectal cancer treated with an adjuvant FOLFOX-4 regimen. The patients were retrospectively evaluated in 2 groups: one group received ${\beta}$-glucan and the other did not (control group). Leucocytes, neutrophils, and platelets were evaluated before and 1 week after chemotherapy and oral mucositis and diarrhea were noted. Leucocyte and neutrophil counts after chemotherapy in the ${\beta}$-glucan group were $7,300/mm^3$ and $3,800/mm^3$, respectively, and the reductions, as compared to baseline, were not significant (p=0.673 and 0.784). The median platelet count was $264,000/mm^3$ after chemotherapy in the ${\beta}$-glucan group and the reduction, as compared to baseline, was borderline significant (p=0.048). In the control group, reduction in leucocyte, neutrophil, and platelet counts was statistically significant. Oral mucositis and diarrhea were less common in the ${\beta}$-glucan group. We conclude that ${\beta}$-glucan can be used to reduce the adverse effects of chemotherapy.
