중동 신학교 설립의 역사적 배경 연구

균두스(Muharrem Gunduz) 장로회신학대학교 세계선교연구원 2007 선교와 신학 Vol.20 No.-

Middle East is religiously highly condensed region where three monotheistic religions were born. The church of Christ in the Middle East has the longest history than the church histories in other part of the world. Therefore, to make the religious studies in this part of the world is relatively much complicated. Without knowing the religious traditions of the region, any attempt to make an institution for the theological studies will be building the house in the dust. For the strong foundation of an institution for theological studies among a specific people, you need to know their religious traditions. Understanding of their historical background will help us to understand what kind of difficulties we will have in establishing a theological seminary. A seminary is a need for the production of clergy and making academic studies. It seems to be understood as a need in places where religious freedom is granted. But, such places like Middle East where there is partial (sometimes none) religious freedom, establishing a Christian theological seminary is understood to be a treat to nations unity. It is because Christianity in this region has some historical limitations which is still affecting any new Christian attempt to spread the good news. It is not just the matter of non-Christians’ coming against Christian work because of their religious sentiments. It also includes Christians’ short comings and misunderstanding resulted in through the conflicts between Christians and Muslims. In the case of Turkey, establishing a theological seminary is therefore is not just the matter of religious freedom of faith communities. It is also closely related with their past. In the case of Heybeli Island Seminary, which has been closed for the last 36 years because of some political and legalistic reasons, the Greece Orthodox Church in Turkey has been facing so many complicated problems in reopening the seminary as in its former status. To solve the need of a theological seminary, Christians in Turkey should make every effort to make their needs clergy and the kind of a theological seminary to be known and understood by the Turkish government. Although Greece Orthodoxs Christians take the initiative in the matter, it is true that they are not alone in this need. So this must be done in cooperation and partnership with other Christian communities, namely Armenian Orthodoks and Turkish Protestants.
