        Increased Expression of EMMPRIN and VEGF in the Rat Brain after Gamma Irradiation

        The extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) has been known to play a key regulatory role in pathological angiogenesis. A elevated activation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) following radiation injury has been shown to mediate blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown. However, the roles of EMMPRIN and VEGF in radiation-induced brain injury after gamma knife surgery (GKS) are not clearly understood. In this study, we investigated EMMPRIN changes in a rat model of radiation injury following GKS and examined potential associations between EMMPRIN and VEGF expression. Adult male rats were subjected to cerebral radiation injury by GKS under anesthesia. We found that EMMPRIN and VEGF expression were markedly upregulated in the target area at 8-12 weeks after GKS compared with the control group by western blot,immunohistochemistry, and RT-PCR analysis. Immunofluorescent double staining demonstrated that EMMPRIN signals colocalized with caspase-3 and VEGF-positive cells. Our data also demonstrated that increased EMMPRIN expression was correlated with increased VEGF levels in a temporal manner. This is the first study to show that EMMPRIN and VEGF may play a role in radiation injuries of the central nervous system after GKS.

      • Toward Anomaly Detection in IaaS Cloud Computing Platforms

        In order to monitor the running status of IaaS cloud computing platforms, performance metric data are collected to perform anomaly detection for IaaS cloud computing platforms and determine whether the IaaS cloud computing platforms fail to run normally. However, it is challenging to effectively detect performance anomalies from a large amount of noisy and high dimensional performance metric data. In this paper, an efficient anomaly detection scheme is proposed for IaaS cloud computing platforms. The proposed scheme first designs a global locality preserving projection algorithm to perform feature extraction on performance metric data, and then introduces a local outlier factor algorithm to detect anomalies. A series of experiments are conducted on a private cloud computing platform. Experimental results show that our proposed global locality preserving projection algorithm outperforms the principal components analysis algorithm and the locality preserving projection algorithm and our proposed anomaly detection scheme is better than the state-of-the-art schemes for IaaS cloud computing platforms.

      • Data-driven Anomaly Detection Method for Monitoring Runtime Performance of Cloud Computing Platforms

        Cloud computing platforms are complex system, which consist of a lot of software working together. Because of software defects, cloud computing platforms may has performance anomaly during runtime. In this paper, a data-driven anomaly detection method is proposed to monitor runtime performance for cloud computing platforms. The proposed method can not only detect the performance anomaly of cloud computing platforms during runtime, but also find out which performance metric results in the anomaly. A series of experiments are conducted on a real private cloud computing platform based on OpenStack and experimental results show the proposed method is better than previous anomaly detection methods for cloud computing platforms.

        A New Kaempferol-based Ru(II) Coordination Complex, Ru(kaem)Cl(DMSO)3: Structure and Absorption–Emission Spectroscopy Study

        Recent interest in developing a new anticancer drug with low side effects has led to the study of the combination of two new anticancer drugs. Although both kaempferol (kaem) and Ru-based metal complexes have not been proven as effective drugs, their unique anticancer activities with reduced side effects have drawn our attention to the need for further studies on their potential in anticancer application. Herein, we report the synthesis, characterization, structure, and spectroscopic properties of a kaem-based Ru (II) complex, RuCl(kaem)(DMSO)3 (1). Because of the presence of a catechol-like functional group in its dihydropyran ring, kaem can strongly bind to the Ru(II) metal center in a basic medium. The molecular structure of the complex was characterized by spectroscopic studies and X-ray crystal structure analysis. In addition, the complex forms a molecular dimer as a result of the cooperative effect of H-bonding and π–π stacking interactions. Moreover, the molecular dimer forms a ladder-like one-dimensional network structure by water mediated H-bonding that further extended into a three-dimensional packing structure. UV–Vis spectroscopy studies of the complex demonstrated the appearance of a strong metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) band in the visible region with strong fluorescence emission derived from the MLCT. Further studies are now in progress to demonstrate synergetic anticancer activity.

      • A Virtual Machine Instance Anomaly Detection System for IaaS Cloud Computing

        Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is one of the three important fundamental service models provided by cloud computing. It provides users with computing resource and storage resource in terms of virtual machine instances. Because of the rapid development of cloud computing, more and more application systems have been deployed on the IaaS cloud computing platforms. Therefore, once anomalies incur in the IaaS cloud computing platforms, all the application systems cannot work normally. In order to enhance the dependability of IaaS cloud computing platform, a virtual machine instance anomaly detection system is proposed for IaaS cloud computing platform to detect virtual machine instances that exhibit abnormal behaviors. The proposed virtual machine instance system consists of four modules that are the data collection, the data transmission, the data storage, and the anomaly detection. In order to reduce the computing complexity and improve the detection precision, the anomaly detection module introduces the principal components analysis to reprocess the collected data and then adopts the Bayesian decision theory to detect the abnormal data. Experimental results show that the proposed virtual machine instance anomaly detection system is effective.

        Incorporating Nonverbal Delivery into Spoken English Assessment: A Preliminary Study

        In assessing communicative language ability (CLA), nonverbal communication strategy, as an indispensable component under the category of strategic competence, plays a pivotal role that exerts influence on candidates’ overall oral performance. Previous studies not only attached importance to nonverbal delivery in communication but also indicated its applicability as one of the measures against which candidates’ spoken English can be assessed. However, there is no immediate applicable framework to which the assessment with such considerations can refer. Taking the strategic competence of CLA model as the theoretical basis and Jungheim’s (1995) Nonverbal Ability Scale as the operationalised taxonomy, the present study put forward four most representative forms of nonverbal delivery and applied them to transcribe the performance of 32 advanced college EFL candidates in group discussion. By aligning nonverbal delivery occurrences and durations with the holistic and analytic scores assigned by raters, this study proved the rationality, reliability and validity of the observed nonverbal delivery forms. Some initial research findings concerning how Chinese EFL learners’ performance of nonverbal delivery interacts with verbal utterances were also presented to show their relations. Based on the above, it is suggested that nonverbal delivery be incorporated into the assessment of spoken English, especially in the context where more detailed feedback or assessment domains are expected, and that the findings on the nonverbal delivery characteristics should inform the design of a rating scale with nonverbal delivery as a dimension.

      • An Efficient Portable Navigation Device with GPS and BDS Positioning Capabilities

        A portable navigation device is a portable electronic product, which has an important function in terms of positioning capability. In order to improve the positioning performance, an efficient portable navigation device is proposed in this paper. The proposed portable navigation device integrates the GPS receiver module and BDS receiver module, and then owns the GPS and BDS positioning capabilities simultaneously. In order to improve the performance of displaying the electronic maps, an efficient strategy based on the levels of detail is designed to display the electronic maps. A series of experiments are conducted and the experimental results show that the proposed portable navigation device can receive and analyze both the BDS and GPS data correctly, as well as the proposed strategy for displaying the electronic maps is better than the traditional strategy that displays all the map files at the same time.

      • A Data Transmission Model based on Adaptive Periodic Push Strategy for IaaS Cloud Computing Platforms

        In this paper, a data transmission model is proposed to simulate the way of transmitting resource status information in IaaS cloud computing platforms. An adaptive periodic push strategy is also proposed to improve the performance of the data transmission model. The time interval in the adaptive periodic push strategy is dynamically updated by considering the change degree of resource status information. A series of experiments are conducted on a cloud computing testbed and experimental results show that the adaptive periodic push strategy performs better than previous data transmission strategies in terms of the number of data transmissions and data coherence.

        Quantitative Analysis of Critical Limitation in Using Extended State Observer

        Active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) has been successfully widely applied. The extended stateobserver (ESO) is a crucial component of ADRC to deal with uncertainties in many control systems. Althoughthe nominal stability of ADRC was proved by adopting a sufficiently fast observer with a performance recoveryprinciple, it is difficult to be employed in practice because severe oscillation or even instability might be triggeredif the fast observer was used. This paper investigates the reason behind this phenomenon within the frameworkof input time-delay sensitivity for a typical first-order system, which can provide an insightful understanding ofADRC. The positive root of the polynomial which determines the maximal input time-delay maintaining closed loopstability is quantitatively analyzed and the relationship among the bandwidth of ESO, other control parametersand the allowable input time-delay is thoroughly studied. Finally, numerical examples are presented to validate thecorresponding theoretical results.

        Thermodynamic analysis and phase characterization of hercynite with TiO2 addition

        Analytically pure Fe2O3, Al2O3 and TiO2 were used as raw materials, batched in the TiO2: Fe2O3: Al2O3 mass ratio of 0: 44:56 and 2: 44:56, respectively, and pressed into specimens with size of Φ25 mm × 30 mm. The green specimens were firedin a CO2 and CO mixing atmosphere at 1550 oC for 6hrs. The fired specimens were characterized by XRD, Rietveldrefinement, SEM, EDS, and XPS to investigate the existing state of TiO2 in the synthesized specimens. The resultsshow that after firing at 1550 oC for 6 hrs, the specimen added with TiO2 has a homogeneous structure andas its phase. The introduced TiO2 participates in the synthesis reaction ofhercynite and enters into crystal lattices of hercynite in the form of Ti4+. Ti4+ occupies the tetrahedron and octahedronpositions, increasing the lattice constant.
