Fluoxetine, a serotonin-selective reuptake inhibitor, exerts antidepressant and antianxiety effects on major depressive and anxiety disorders. Previous studies suggest that treatment with fluoxetine influences the expression of various proteins that are involved in proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis in the neuronal cells of the brain. However, many aspects of the molecular pathways that modulate antidepressant action are not well understood. Here, with the aim of identifying proteins involved in antidepressant action, we examined the protein expression profile of human embryonic carcinoma (NCCIT) cells in response to fluoxetine treatment using proteomic techniques such as two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). We found several upregulated and downregulated proteins in fluoxetine-treated NCCIT cells, and then biochemically confirmed the increased expression of heat shock protein 90 and 14-3-3&epsis;, which play an essential role in many cellular mechanisms including cell cycle control and other signaling pathways. Our data suggest that the regulated expression of heat shock protein 90, 14-3-3&epsis;, and other identified proteins may be associated with the therapeutic action of fluoxetine.

Abstract

Polyvinylpyrrolidone, PVP, stabilized Pd–M (M=Ag, Au, Cu, Ni and Pt) alloy colloids are successfully prepared by γ-irradiation in aqueous solution. PVP-stabilized Pd–M colloids are characterized by field-emission transmission electron microscopy (FE-TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS). The catalytic efficiency of Pd and Pd–M alloy colloids is analyzed for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol in aqueous solution at room temperature. The catalytic efficiency of Pd–M alloy nanoparticles takes the following order: Pd>Pd–Cu∼Pd–Ni>Pd–Ag∼Pd–Au>Pd–Pt.

Reflections with Phase Angle 0 or π in Noncentric Space Groups

The phase angles for certain reflections in 159 noncentric space groups are shown to be either 0 or π for certain conditions just like those in centric space groups. Those special reflections might offer an important clue for crystal structure analyses.
The CRP-to-Transthyretin Ratio Predicts Infectious Complications after Gastrectomy for Gastric Cance

Introduction: Acute phase proteins play important role in systemic inflammatory reaction and have been used to quantify severity of illness and prognosticate clinical outcomes. Especially, combination of prognostic inflammatory and nutritional index, such as a C-reactive protein-to-Transthyretin ratio (C/T ratio), was revealed may be less costly and more efficient than complex formulas. We aimed to evaluate the predictability of infectious complications after gastrectomy using the C/T ratio. Methods: From January 2013 to December 2014, total of 1005 patients who had undergone gastrectomy for gastric cancer and had routinely collected data of transthyretin were included. The CRP and transthyretin were measured within 24 hours of admission and on postoperative (POD) 1st, 3rd, 5th day. Postoperative infectious complications have been prospectively recorded using predefined definitions based on Accordion Severity Grading System. Results: The study subject consisted of 653 males and 352 females with mean age of 61.9±11.7 years. Postoperative infectious complications occurred in 73 patients (7.3%). Among perioperative biomarkers, C/T ratio on POD1 was revealed as only relatively accurate test for prediction of postoperative infectious complications (AUC, 0.703; 95% CI, 0.639-0.767; p=0.000). The patients were dichotomized by cut-off value of 0.1831 which based on the highest Youden`s J index. In multivariate analyses, higher C/T ratio on POD1 was consistently identified as significant predictor of infectious complications after adjusting for other significant risk factors including age, sex, ASA score, ECOG performance status, extent of resection, and estimated blood loss (OR, 3.505; 95% CI, 1.518-8.091; p=0.003). Conclusion: Our study suggests that the C/T ratio on POD1 could be a useful early predictor of infectious complications after gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Large scaled prospective studies are warranted to confirm our result
