Tactile Comfort Prediction of Functional Fabrics from Instrumental Data Using Intelligence Systems

        Melkie Getnet Tadesse,Yan Chen,Lichuan Wang,Vincent Nierstrasz,Carmen Loghin 한국섬유공학회 2019 Fibers and polymers Vol.20 No.1

Subjective and objective evaluations of the handle of textile materials are very important to describe its tactile comfort for next-to-skin goods. In this paper, the applicability of artificial neural-network (ANN) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) modeling approaches for the prediction of the psychological perceptions of functional fabrics from mechanical properties were investigated. Six distinct functional fabrics were evaluated using human subjects for their tactile score and total hand values (THV) using tactile and comfort-based fabric touch attributes. Then, the measurement ofmechanical properties of the same set of samples using KES-FB was performed. The RMSE values for ANN and ANFIS predictions were 0.014 and 0.0122 and are extremely lower than the variations of the perception scores of 0.644 and 0.85 for ANN and ANFIS, respectively with fewer prediction errors. The observed results indicated that the predicted tactile score and THV are almost very close to the actual output obtained using the human judgment. Fabric objective measurement technology, therefore, provides reliable measurement approaches for functional fabric quality inspection, control, and design specification.

Elimination of Grapevine leafroll associated virus-3, Grapevine rupestris stem pitting associated virus and Grapevine virus A from a Tunisian Cultivar by Somatic Embryogenesis and Characterization of the Somaclones Using Ampelographic Descriptors

        Bouamama-Gzara, Badra,Selmi, Ilhem,Chebil, Samir,Melki, Imene,Mliki, Ahmed,Ghorbel, Abdelwahed,Carra, Angela,Carimi, Francesco,Mahfoudhi, Naima The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2017 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.33 No.6

Prospecting of local grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) germplasm revealed that Tunisia possesses a rich patrimony which presents diversified organoleptic characteristics. However, viral diseases seriously affect all local grapevine cultivars which risk a complete extinction. Sanitation programs need to be established to preserve and exploit, as a gene pool, the Tunisian vineyards areas. The presence of the Grapevine leafroll associated virus-3 (GLRaV-3), Grapevine stem pitting associated virus (GRSPaV) and Grapevine virus A (GVA), were confirmed in a Tunisian grapevine cultivar using serological and molecular analyses. The association between GRSPaV and GVA viruses induces more rugose wood symptoms and damages. For this reason the cleansing of the infected cultivar is highly advisable. Direct and recurrent somatic embryos of cv. 'Hencha' were successfully induced from filament, when cultured on $Ch{\acute{e}}e$and Pool (1987). based-medium, enriched with $2mg1^{-1}$ of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and $2.5mg1^{-1}$ of Thidiazuron, after 36 weeks of culture. After six months of acclimatization, RT-PCR carried on 50 somaplants confirmed the absence of GVA, GRSPaV as well as GLRaV-3 viruses in all somaplants. Ampelographic analysis, based on eight OIV descriptors, was carried out on two years acclimated somaplants, compared to the mother plant. Results demonstrated that the shape and contours of 46 somaclones leaves are identical to mother plant leaves and four phenotypically off-type plants were observed. The healthy state of 100% 'Hencha' somaclones and the high percentage of phenotypically true-to-type plants demonstrate that somatic embryogenesis is a promising technique to adopt for grapevine viruses elimination.

A unique histone deacetylase inhibitor alters microRNA expression and signal transduction in chemoresistant ovarian cancer cells.

        Balch, Curt,Naegeli, Kaleb,Nam, Seungyoon,Ballard, Brett,Hyslop, Alan,Melki, Christina,Reilly, Elizabeth,Hur, Man-Wook,Nephew, Kenneth P Landes Bioscience 2012 Cancer Biology & Therapy Vol.13 No.8

<P>Previously, we demonstrated potent antineoplastic activity of a distinctive histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACI), AR42, against chemoresistant CP70 ovarian cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Here, in follow-up to that work, we explored AR42 global mechanisms-of-action by examining drug-associated, genome-wide microRNA and mRNA expression profiles, which differed from those of the well-studied HDACI vorinostat. Expression of microRNA genes in negative correlation with their 'target' coding gene (mRNA) transcripts, and transcription factor genes with expression positively correlated with coding genes having their cognate binding sites, were identified and subjected to gene ontology analyses. Those evaluations showed AR42 gene expression patterns to negatively correlate with Wnt signaling (> 18-fold induction of SFRP1), the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (40% decreased ATF1), and cell cycle progression (33-fold increased 14-3-3σ). By contrast, AR42 transcriptome alterations correlated positively with extrinsic ('death receptor') apoptosis (> 2.3-fold upregulated DAPK) and favorable ovarian cancer histopathology and prognosis. Inhibition of Wnt signaling was experimentally validated by: (1) > 2.6-fold reduced Wnt reporter activity; and (2) 36% reduction in nuclear, activated β-catenin. Likely AR42 induction of multiple (type I or type II autophagic) cell death cascades was further supported by 57% decreased reliance upon reactive oxygen, increased mitochondrial membrane disruption, and caspase independence, as compared with vorinostat. Taken together, we demonstrate distinct antineoplastic pathway alterations, in aggressive ovarian cancer cells, following treatment with a promising HDACI, AR42. These combined computational and experimental approaches may also represent a straightforward means for mechanistic studies of other promising antineoplastics, and/or the identification of agents that may complement epigenetic therapies.</P>
