Engineering magnetic type radio-absorbers based on composites with a dual-phase polymer matrix

        Marek Gořalík,Marek Jurča,Constantin Bubulinca,Vladimír A. Babayan,Jarmila Vilčáková,Natalia E. Kazantseva,Petr Sáha 대한금속·재료학회 2022 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.18 No.4

This work is focused on the optimization of electromagnetic and mechanical properties of magnetic polymer composites forEMI applications as radio absorbers (RAs). Polymer composites with a dual-phase polymer matrix, vinyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) in epoxy (ER), were investigated for fabricating highlyfilled manganese zinc ferrite (MnZn) andcarbonyl iron (CI) composites with respect to radio-absorption and mechanical properties. The dielectric and magnetic propertiesof the composites were determined by the type, concentration as well as the polymer matrix composition. Increase ofthe filler and the PDMS concentration leads to an increase in magnetic losses due to a decrease in the demagnetizing field. Theelectromagnetic properties of the composites were evaluated in the RF band using the impedance method (1 MHz–3 GHz). Based on the complex permittivity (ε*) and the complex permeability (μ*), the reflection loss RL (dB) of single-layer metalbackedRAs were calculated. The RAs with a MnZn ferrite demonstrated a larger bandwidth to thickness ratio in comparisonwith the CI-based RAs due to a proper ratio between ε* and μ* which leads to the better impedance matching conditions. According to the mechanical analyses (DMA, Charpy impact strength) the significant increase of stiffness up to 125% andthe impact strength up to 150% was achieved due to the optimal composition of the polymer matrix and the filler.

Eicosanoid Mediators in the Airway Inflammation of Asthmatic Patients: What is New?

2016 Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research Vol.8 No.6

Lipid mediators contribute to inflammation providing both pro-inflammatory signals and terminating the inflammatory process by activation of macrophages. Among the most significant biologically lipid mediators, these are produced by free-radical or enzymatic oxygenation of arachidonic acid named “eicosanoids”. There were some novel eicosanoids identified within the last decade, and many of them are measurable in clinical samples by affordable chromatography-mass spectrometry equipment or sensitive immunoassays. In this review, we present some recent advances in understanding of the signaling by eicosanoid mediators during asthmatic airway inflammation. Eicosanoid profiling in the exhaled breath condensate, induced sputum, or their metabolites measurements in urine is complementary to the cellular phenotyping of asthmatic inflammation. Special attention is paid to aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease, a phenotype of asthma manifested by the most profound changes in the profile of eicosanoids produced. A hallmark of this type of asthma with hypersensitivity to non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is to increase biosynthesis of cysteinyl leukotrienes on the systemic level. It depends on transcellular biosynthesis of leukotriene C4 by platelets that adhere to granulocytes releasing leukotriene A4. However, other abnormalities are also reported in this type of asthma as a resistance to anti-inflammatory activity of prostaglandin E2 or a robust eosinophil interferon-γ response resulting in cysteinyl leukotrienes production. A novel mechanism is also discussed in which an isoprostane structurally related to prostaglandin E2 is released into exhaled breath condensate during a provoked asthmatic attack. However, it is concluded that any single eicosanoid or even their complex profile can hardly provide a thorough explanation for the mechanism of asthmatic inflammation.

Kipling and Conrad: A Look from Different Angles of Empire

Vol.9 No.3

A short and passing remark on the difference between his and Kipling's writing made by Conrad in the letter to Henri D. Davray of 26th January 1908 gives one food for thought. Conrad says there that Kipling is “a national” writer and that he “tells about his compatriots,” but he himself, he “writes for them.” This remark of Conrad's I examine in my essay. The difference between Kipling's “talking” and Conrad's “writing” is located in rhetorical level, but what is rhetorical gains philosophical dimension. The difference between Kipling's “speaking” and Conrad's “writing” captures the difference of their discourses and seals the literary rank of their writings. This difference is visible in the modes of narratives they use: in Kipling's it manifests itself in the way he affirms the symbols and rites of the community, in Conrad's in the manner he puts them in doubt or questions them. Just as Rudyard Kipling's Anglo-Indianness saved him from being a die-hard imperialist, so Joseph Conrad's distrust of conventional wisdom made him alien to the idea of Empire. “Imperial” Kipling shows himself to be a proponent and a precursor of the melting pot community theory. New readings of Kipling's texts change opinions of his writing commonly expressed by some established critics of imperial discourse. I discuss this discourse on Conrad's writings too, to conclude that it is impossible to regard Heart of Darkness to be a novella written “from the imperialists' point of view.”

        O diachronii w pragmalingwistyce

Vol.14 No.1

Seven Steps to the Diagnosis of NSAIDs Hypersensitivity: How to Apply a New Classification in Real Practice?

2015 Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research Vol.7 No.4

Frequent use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has been paralleled by increasing occurrence of adverse reactions, which vary from mild local skin rashes or gastric irritation to severe, generalized symptoms and even life-threatening anaphylaxis. NSAID-induced hypersensitivity reactions may involve both immunological and non-immunological mechanisms and should be differentiated from type A adverse reactions. Clinical diagnosis and effective management of a hypersensitive patient cannot be achieved without identifying the underlying mechanism. In this review, we discuss the current classification of NSAID-induced adverse reactions and propose a practical diagnostic algorithm that involves 7 steps leading to the determination of the type of NSAID-induced hypersensitivity and allows for proper patient management.

Comparison of Tactile and Optical Measurement Methods Using Precise Geometrical Shape

Marek Vozár,Boris Pätoprstý,Róbert Hrušecký 한국정밀공학회 2024 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.25 No.3

The presented article deals with the comparison of accuracy different measuring methods, in order to determine the achievable level of measurement accuracy as well as to evaluate deviations that may occur when measuring the identical component on different machine. The measured component was cemented carbide rod of 10 mm diameter manufactured by the company Ceratizit. Two measurement systems with various degrees of reported accuracy were utilized—coordinate measurement machine Zeiss Prismo Ultra and optical microscope Zoller Genius 3 s. Data obtained by the measurement were evaluated and compared. The experiment was carried out so that appropriate measuring system can be chosen when measuring cutting tools based on the various specific requirements depending on the currently conducted experiments, reducing the time it takes to have the tools measured as well as the load on measuring machines operators. Another reason for the experiment was to determine whether used measurement systems are capable of measuring micro-geometry of the cutting tools, which turned out to be not possible due to the technical limitations of both methods. Comparing the values of deviations between the measuring devices used in the experiment it can be concluded that the accuracy of optical measurement method is sufficient for use in other ongoing experiments when measuring basic tool geometry.
