      • Culture in a Day?

        Li-Jiuan Lilie Tsay,Ruei King 세계문화관광학회 2008 Conference Proceedings Vol.9 No.0

Exposure to English culture and an authentic English speaking environment has always been regarded as one of the key elements to successful English language teaming. As a result, an increasing number of students go to English speaking countries to learn thc language as well as to explore the culture. For those who cannot afford the high tuition fees abroad, the parents of the students try all means to send their children to bilingual primary schools. In order to resolve this problem, and inspired by the An-San English Village in Seoul, Taiwan launched its "one-day study tour"English learning program in 2007. Different situational classrooms, such as airport customs, a hotel, a restaurant etc., are set up and manned with native speakers to teach students appropriate conversations within those scenarios. With the aim of providing an authentic English speaking environment and cultural settings, the learning results are expected to be boosted to optimum levels. The following questions therefore arise; what are the learning impacts of the one-day study tour upon the improvements of students' English abilities and levels of learning interest? Can culture and language be taught and learned in one day? The purposes of this research are to find out the answers to these questions through the analysis of 561 questionnaires from the students.

      • A Simulated Culture? : Cultural Learning Impact of the One-day Study Tour

Li-Jiuan Lilie Tsay,An-Wen Deng,Su-Yuan Lien 세계문화관광학회 2008 International Journal of Culture and tourism Resea Vol.1 No.1

One-day study tour in Taiwan began its establishment in early 2007, inspired by the An-San English Village in Seoul, in order to help students learn English quickly and efficiently. Different situational classrooms, such as a clinic, a hotel, a travel agency etc., are set up and manned with native teachers to teach students appropriate conversations accordingly. The main ideas of setting up such an English immersion program are to provide students with enough exposure to an English speaking environment and the culture related. In language learning, culture is one of the key elements which often determine students' learning interest and therefore cannot be neglected. In this study, based on the previous literature research, a model which suggests the relationships among learners' English ability (EA), learning interest (LI) and the situational classroom teaching (SCT) is discussed and explored. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether the simulated culture in different classroom settings could enhance students' English ability and their learning interest through the examination of the model suggested.
