        A Study of the Yang-gyeong-gyu-il-ui (兩景揆日儀) in the Joseon Dynasty

        The Yang-gyeong-gyu-il-ui (兩景揆日儀) is a kind of elevation sundial using three wooden plates. Sang-hyeok Lee (李尙爀, 1810~?) and Byeong-cheol Nam (南秉哲, 1817~1863) gave descriptions of this sundial and explained how to use it in their Gyu-il-go (揆日考) and Ui-gi-jip-seol (儀器輯說), respectively. According to Gyu-il-go (揆日考) there are two horizontal plates and two vertical plates that have lines of season and time. Subseasonal (節候) lines are engraved between seasonal (節氣) lines, subdividing the interval into three equal lines of Cho-hu (初候, early subseason), Jung-hu (中候, mid subseason) and Mal-hu (末候, late subseason); there are 13 seasonal lines for a year, thus resulting in 37 subseasonal lines; also, there are 12 double-hour (時辰) lines for a day engraved on these plates. The only remaining artifact of Yang-gyeong-gyu-il-ui was made in 1849 (the $15^{th}$ year of Heon-jong) and is kept at the Korea University Museum. We have compared and analyzed Yang-gyeong-gyu-il-ui and similar western sundials. Also, we have reviewed the scientific aspect of this artifact and built a replica. Yang-gyeong-gyu-il-ui is a new model enhanced from the miniaturization development in the early Joseon Dynasty and can be applied to the southern part of the tropic line through a structure change.

        한국인 혀동맥의 형태

        연구자들은 한국인 어른 남녀 시신의 머리와 목 61 을 대상으로 깊은 층 육안해부를 시행하여 혀동맥의 형태를 조사하였다 혀동맥이 일어나는 유형은 위갑상동맥, 혀동맥, 그리고 얼굴동맥이 바깥목동액에서 따로 가지를 내어 나뉘는 경우가 563% 호 가장 않았으며, 얼굴동맥과 혀동맥이 강은 가지에서 얼어나 나뉘는 경우 (312%), 그리고 위 강상동액과 혀동맥이 같은 가지에서 나뉘는 경우 (12 5%) 등이 있었다. 혀동맥과 혀동맥의 둘째 부분은 덮는 목뿔혀근 과의 영대학적 관계는 각각 혀동맥의 첫째 부분이 목뿔혀근 뒤에서 심하게 휘어져 깊은 층으로 들어가는 유형 (41 2 %), 그리고 혀동맥의 첫째 부분이 목뿔혀근의 뒤쪽 근육모셔리 바로 뒤흘 지나 깊은 층으로 들어가는 경우가 661% 로 가장 많았다 목뿔혀근 깊은층에서 혀동맥의 둘째 부분이 달리는 양상은 급하게 위쪽으로 꺾역 달리다가 다시 앞쪽으로 꺾여 혀의 깊은 곳으로 들어가는 경우와 목뿔빼에서 혀쪽으로 완만한 굽이플 이루며 올라가는 경우가 비슷한 반도로 관찰되었다. 입안바닥에 분포하는 혀밑동맥이 혀동맥 셋째 부분에서 나오는 경우슨 전체의 590% 에서만 관창되었으며 그 외는 대부분 얼굴동맥의 턱끝 및동맥 가지가 턱옥뽕근응 옳고 입안바닥에 분포하였다. 따라서 연구자들은 한국인 업안바 닥에는 혀동액이 전체의 59%에서만 분포하며 그외는 영굴동액의 턱끝밑동맥 가지 , 그리고 기타 다른 동맥의 가지들이 분포한다는 사실을 확인하였다

      • Factors Associated with Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Primary Intraventricular Hemorrhage

        <P><B>Background</B></P><P>Primary intraventricular hemorrhage (PIVH) is an uncommon type of intracerebral hemorrhage. Owing to its rarity, the clinical and radiological factors affecting outcomes in patients with PIVH have not been widely studied.</P><P><B>Material/Methods</B></P><P>We retrospectively reviewed 112 patients (mean age 53 years) treated for PIVH at our institution from January 2004 to December 2014. Clinical and radiological parameters were analyzed 3 months after initial presentation to identify factors associated with clinical outcomes, as assessed by the Glasgow Outcome Scale (favorable ≥4, unfavorable <4).</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Of the 99 patients who underwent angiography, causative vascular abnormalities were found in 46%, and included Moyamoya disease, arteriovenous malformation, and cerebral aneurysm. At 3 months after initial presentation, 64% and 36% of patients were in the favorable and unfavorable outcome groups, respectively. The mortality rate was 19%. However, most survivors had no or mild deficits. Age, initial Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, simplified acute physiology score (SAPS II), modified Graeb score, and various radiological parameters reflecting ventricular dilatation were significantly different between the groups. Specifically, a GCS score of less than 13 (<I>p</I>=0.015), a SAPS II score of less than 33 (<I>p</I>=0.039), and a dilated fourth ventricle (<I>p</I>=0.043) were demonstrated to be independent predictors of an unfavorable clinical outcome.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>In this study we reveal independent predictors of poor outcome in primary intraventricular hemorrhage patients, and show that nearly half of the patients in our study had predisposing vascular abnormalities. Routine angiography is recommended in the evaluation of PIVH to identify potentially treatable etiologies, which may enhance long-term prognosis.</P>

      • Characterization of Mouse Interferon-Induced Transmembrane Protein-1 Expression in Mouse Testis

        Interferon induced transmembrane protein-1 (Ifitm-1) has been reported to have an important role in primordial germ cell formation, and it has expressed in female reproductive organ. In the present study, Ifitm-1 gene expression was identified in testes and all part of epididymis using western immunoblot and immunohistochemistry. Interestingly, Ifitm-1 expression was observed on the head of spermatozoa. To investigate the role of Ifitm-1 gene expression in behavior of spermatozoa after acrosome reaction, fresh sperm was incubated with calcium ionophore to induce acrosome reaction, whereas the expression of Ifitm-1 was not altered after the acrosome reaction. Then to identify the effect of Ifitm-1 in sperm motility and other seminal parameters, different concentration of Ifitm-1 antibody was incubated with spermatozoa, and seminal parameters were assessed using computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA). Interestingly, motility, progressive, and VAP were increased in the sperm with Ifitm-1 antibody treated compared to rabbit serum, however other parameters such as straightness were not changed. In order to identify the functional significance of Ifitm-1 in fertilization, capacitated spermatozoa were pre-incubated with anti-Ifitm-1 antibody and subsequently examined the ability to adhere to mouse oocytes. However, any defection or alteration in sperm-egg fusion was not found, Ifitm-1 antibody treated or non-treated spermatozoa showed a normal penetration. Although the precise role of Ifitm-1 in sperm motility and following fertilization need to be elucidated, this study suggests that the activation of Ifitm-1 on the sperm may enhance the motility of spermatozoa in mice.

        Analysis of the Aluminum Extrusion Process Equipped with the Continuous Heat Treatment System

        In this study, the heat flow of the plant scale aluminum extrusion process was investigated to establish optimum continuous heat treatment conditions. During the extrusion of 6061 aluminum alloy, processing parameters such as the extrusion pressure, speed and temperature histories of billets were logged as a function of time. The surface temperature of the billets increased at constant ram speed, while it decreased with decreases of the ram speed. In order to maintain the billet temperature within a solutionizing temperature range prior to the succeeding water quenching step, the ram speed or the temperature of the blower should be controlled. The temperature histories of the billets during the extrusion and hot air blowing processes were successfully simulated by using the velocity boundary model in ANSYS CFX. The methodology to design an optimum process by using a commercial simulation program is described in this study on the basis of the metallurgical validation results of the microstructural observation of the extrudates. The developed model allowed the advantages of taking into account the motion of the extrudate coupled with the temperature change based on empirical data. Calculations were made for the extrudate passing through the isothermal chamber maintained at appropriate temperature. It was confirmed that the continuous heat treatment system is beneficial to the productivity enhancement of the commercial aluminum extrusion industry.

        Ki67 Index Is the Most Powerful Factor for Predicting the Recurrence in Atypical Meningioma : Retrospective Analysis of 99 Patients in Two Institutes

        Objective : The primary objective of this study was to identify predicting factors for local control (LC) of atypical meningioma, and we validated them with comparing the predicting factors for recurrence-free survival (RFS). We also examined the rate of LC after surgical resection with or without adjuvant treatment and RFS. Methods : Clinical and radiological records of patients with atypical meningiomas diagnosed at two institutes from January 2000 to December 2018 were reviewed retrospectively. Histopathological features were also reviewed using formalin-fixed paraffin embedded samples from pathological archives. Results : Of the 99 atypical meningiomas eligible for analysis, 36 (36.4%) recurred during the follow-up period (mean, 83.3 months; range, 12-232 months). The rate of 3-year LC and 5-year LC was 80.8% and 74.7%, respectively. The mean time-to-recurrence was 49.4 months (range, 12-150). The mean RFS was 149.3 months (95% confidence interval, 128.8-169.8 months) during the mean follow-up duration of 83.3 months (range, 12-232 months). Multivariate analysis using Cox proportional-hazard regression model showed that the extent of resection (hazard ratio [HR], 4.761; p=0.013), Ki67 index (HR, 8.541; p=0.004), mitotic index (HR, 3.275; p=0.044), and tumor size (HR, 3.228; p=0.041) were independently associated with LC. These factors were also statistically associated with RFS. In terms of radiotherapy after surgical resection, the recurrence was not prevented by immediate radiotherapy because of the strong effect of proliferative index on recurrence. Conclusion : The present study suggests that the extent of resection, proliferative index (according to Ki67 expression) and mitotic index, and tumor size are associated with recurrence of atypical meningiomas. However, our results should be further validated through prospective and randomized clinical trials to overcome the inborn bias of retrospective nature of the study design.

        Analysis of Tropospheric Carbon Monoxide in the Northeast Asia from MOPITT

        The Measurement of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) instrument is an eight-channel gas correlation radiometer that launched on the Earth Observing System (EOS) Terra spacecraft in 1999. Its main objectives are to measure carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4) concentrations in the troposphere. This study analyzes tropospheric carbon monoxide distributions using MOPITT data and compare with ozone distributions in Northeast Asia. In general, seasonal CO variations are characterized by a peak in spring and decrease in summer. Also, this study revealed that the seasonal cycles of CO are maximum in spring and minimum in summer with average concentrations ranging from 118ppbv to 170ppbv. The monthly average of CO shows a similar profile to those of O3. This fact clearly indicates that the high concentration of CO in spring is caused by two possible causes: the photochemical CO production in the troposphere, or the transport of the CO in the northeast Asia. The CO and O3 seasonal cycles in the Northeast Asia are influenced extensively by the seasonal exchange of the different types of air mass due to the Asian monsoon. The continental air masses contain high concentrations of O3 and CO due to higher continental background concentrations and sometimes due to the contribution of regional pollution. In summer the transport pattern is reversed. The Pacific marine air masses prevail over Korea, so that the marine air masses bring low concentrations of CO and O3, which tend to give the apparent minimum in summer.

        A study on diffusion bonding of superplastic Ti–6Al–4V ELI grade

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Ti–6Al–4V ELI (extra low interstitials) grade alloy provides improved ductility and fracture toughness comparing to grade 5 Ti–6Al–4V alloy. In order to find the optimum superplastic forming and diffusion bonding (SPF/DB) condition, a series of tensile tests was carried out at the strain rate range of 10<SUP>−4</SUP> to 10<SUP>−2</SUP>s<SUP>−1</SUP> and temperature range of 1073–1223K. The maximum elongation of 1898% was obtained at the strain rate of 10<SUP>−3</SUP>s<SUP>−1</SUP> at 850°C. It was shown that the ELI grade alloy performs better than the grade 5 alloy in terms of the optimum superplastic condition for Ti–6Al–4V. Based on this result, diffusion bonding process of superplastic Ti–6Al–4V ELI sheet metals was developed. Bonding was completed by means of inert gas pressure applied in a bonding tool at high temperature. The microstructure of the bonding area was investigated and the bonding interface was microscopically undetectable. The evidence of nucleation of new grains and migration of grain boundaries at the interface proves the diffusion bonding process is successful. It is shown that the superplastic forming and diffusion bonding of Ti–6Al–4V ELI grade is possible at the temperature lower than those of conventional Ti–6Al–4V.</P>
