Efficient Simulation Method for Dielectric Barrier Discharge Load
Kudryavtsev Oleg,Tarek Ahmed,Mutsuo Nakaoka 전력전자학회 2004 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.4 No.3
The dielectric barrier discharge is recognized as one of the efficient methods of ultraviolet light generation and ozone production. As well, it is widely utilized for gaseous wastes neutralization and other technological processes in industry. This electrochemical reaction is electrically equivalent to a nonlinear capacitive load that represents some difficulties for designing the power supply. Therefore, a conventional power supply is designed for a drastically simplified model of the load and generally is not optimal. This paper presents a fast simulation approach for the nonlinear capacitive model representation of the dielectric barrier discharge load lamp. The main idea of the proposed method is to use analytical solutions of the differential state equations for the load and find the unknown initial conditions for the steady state by an optimization method. The derived expressions for the analytical solutions are rather complicated, however they greatly reduce the calculation time, which make sense when a deeper analysis is performed. This paper introduces the proposed simulation method and gives some examples of its application such as estimation of the load equivalent parameters and load matching conditions.

Background: The purpose of the work is to develop a system that allows processing of information for analysis and industrial risk management, to monitor the level of industrial safety and to perform necessary measures aimed at the prevention of accidents, casualties, and development of professional diseases for effective management of industrial safety at hazardous industrial sites. Methods: Risk assessment of accidents and incidents is based on expert evaluations. Based on the lists of criteria parameters and their possible values, provided by the experts, a unified information and analytical database is compiled, which is included in the final interrogation questionnaires. Risk assessment of industrial injuries and occupational diseases is based on statistical methods. Results: The result of the research is the creation of Guidelines for risk management on hazardous industrial sites of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Guidelines determine the directions and methods of complex assessment of the state of industrial safety and labor protection and they could be applied as methodological basis at the development of preventive measures for emergencies, casualties, and incidents at hazardous industrial sites. Conclusion: Implementation of the information-analytical system of risk level assessment allows to analyze the state of risk of a possible accident at industrial sites, make valid management decisions aimed at the prevention of emergencies, and monitor the effectiveness of accident prevention measures.

The efficient power MOSFET inverter applied for a simple and low cost power supply is proposed for driving the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) lamp load. For decades, the DBD phenomenon has been used for ozone gas production in industry. In this research, the ultraviolet and visible light sources utilizing the DBD lamp is considered as the load for solid-state high frequency power supply. It is found that the simple voltage-source single-ended quasi-resonant ZVS inverter with only one active power switch could effectively drive this load with the output power up to 700 W. The pulse density modulation based control scheme for the single-ended quasi-resonant ZVS inverter using a low voltage and high current power MOSFET switching device is proposed to provide a linear power regulation characteristic in the wide range 0-100% of the full power as compared with the conventional control based Royer type parallel resonant inverter type power supplies.

When Do Opening Stock Returns Tend to be Higher?
Andrey Kudryavtsev 한국국제경제학회 2014 International Economic Journal Vol.28 No.3
In this study, I make an effort to formulate a trading rule that would make use of some systematic interday patterns in individual stocks’ opening returns. I analyze intraday price data on all the stocks that were S&P 500 Index constituents during the period from 1993 to 2012. I document that if the general market direction of the previous day's opening session is controlled for, then a stock's opening return tends to be higher if, on the previous trading day, its opening return was relatively high (either positive, or higher than the same day's opening market return) and its open-to-close return was relatively low (either non-positive, or lower than or equal to the same day's open-to-close market return). Finally, for the sampling period, I construct two different investment portfolios involving a long position in the stocks on the days when, according to the findings, their opening returns are expected to be high and a short position in the stocks on the days when, according to the findings, their opening returns are expected to be low. Both portfolios are found to yield significantly positive returns, providing evidence for the practical applicability of the documented patterns in opening stock prices.
