        Present Status of Fisheries Wealth in Angola

        Angola has a coastline of about 1,650 km long. Two diverging current namely, the Angola current with its warm water from the north and the cold Benguella Current in the south create a strong up-welling with a high productive ecosystem for marine resources. The area from Lobito to the mouth of the Cunene River, also known as the Southern fishing zone is by far the most productive of Angola's fishing zones. In 1977, the total potential of its marine fisheries sector was estimated at more than 700,000 tonnes per annum. In 2003, the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) established for demersal species was 57,600 tonnes and 160,000 tonnes for pelagic species. The most important resources are various marine demersal and pelagic fish including pilchard and the Cape and Cunene horse Mackerel (Tranchurus capensis and T. trecae). Sardinellas (Sardinella aurita and S. maderensis) are fished in parallel with horse mackerel. The rest of the catches are mainly demersal spp. and some deep water crustaceans. The demersal sppecies consist of Hake (Merluccius polli and M. capensis) and the large eye dentex spp. Tunas are caught at certain times of the year whilst some marine shrimp are also harvested from the Angolan waters. Angola also has several high value freshwater fish species, exploited by about 255 fishers. Tilapia sp. is among the most important and abundant fresh water fish found in Angola. Other species include the catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and fresh water prawns (Macrobrachuin rosenbergii). Some aquaculture ponds have been established in the country side, but due to lack of investment, proper training and the impact of civil war have seriously limited developments in the sub sector.

        Development of Fatigue Test Method and Improvement of Fatigue Life by New Functional Steel Plates for Welding of Trough Rib and Deck Plate of Orthotropic Decks

        Under heavy traffic conditions, some fatigue cracks have been found at welding joints between U-shaped ribs “trough ribs”and deck plates. Fatigue cracks along thickness direction of deck plate from root tip are important because visual crack detection from outside is limited. In this paper, new functional steel plates with initiation resistance of fatigue crack at weldment and propagation resistance at base material are applied to deck plate to evaluate improvement of fatigue life. We conducted fixed-point fatigue tests with real scale partial models consisted with one trough rib and a transverse girder, and the elastic FEM (Finite Element Method) analysis corresponding to the fatigue test specimen. Based on these results, we studied the fatigue properties which focused on the difference between conventional steel plates and newly developed steel plates, FCA (Fatigue Crack Arrester). Fatigue cracks were initiated from root tip of welded joints between a trough rib and a deck plate. It is clarified that FCA steel plates instead of conventional steel plates can improve the fatigue life under the same welding conditions. This improvement effect becomes much clearer in the high cycle region, which is noticeable at the operation and management stage of bridges.

        Assessment of Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions for the Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillations in CMIP5 Models over the Indian Monsoon Region

        The boreal summer intraseasonal oscillations (BSISO) are the prominent features of South Asian summer monsoon and mainly governed by the internal atmospheric dynamics and air-sea interactions. The present study aims to understand and evaluate the relationship between the convection and the associated air-sea interactions during the BSISO over the Indian monsoon region. To accomplish this, the present study utilizes observations and the 22 general circulation model (GCM) simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). Representation of Indian monsoon season rainfall, sea surface temperature (SST) and latent heat fluxes in CMIP5 models such as climatological and intraseasonal are assessed using Global Precipitation Climatology Project rainfall by Taylor diagram metric. Results suggest that the majority of CMIP5 models simulated the northward propagation of precipitation and zonal wind at 850 hPa. However, models bias of BSISO variance shows significant spatial heterogeneity over the regions of the Arabian Sea (AS), Sub-Continent of India (SCI) and Bay of Bengal (BoB). The CMIP5 model which shows large biases in the mean state is degrading the northward propagation of BSISO. The phase relationship of ocean (land) and atmospheric interactions are diagnosed with lead-lag regression analysis. On ISO timescales over north Indian Ocean (NIO) convection leads the turbulent fluxes and westerly winds by a week. However, the majority of the models shows large uncertainty to represent this prominent feature over AS and SCI. Further, improper representation of the lead-lag relationship of SST and precipitation on ISO scales over the AS, BoB, and NIO in the CMIP5 models are attributing for significant bias variances. The present study advocates that BSISO propagation in CMIP5 models is mainly attributing from the internal atmospheric dynamics and air-sea interactions. However, for the realistic amplitude simulation of BSISO, proper representation of air-sea feedback mechanisms is crucial in CMIP5 models. The present study further suggests that the oceanic feedback processes of the CMIP5 models need to be improved for the accurate prediction of the intraseasonal variations.

        The common goals of designing a routing algorithm are not only to reduce control packet overhead, maximize throughput and minimize the end-to-end delay, but also take into consideration the energy consumption. Scalability is an important factor in designing an efficient routing protocol for wireless sensor networks (WSN's). Three metrics (power consumption, time of transmission and packet loss rate) are used in order to compare three routing protocols which are AODV, DSDV and LEACH.

      • The Study on Vegetation Structure Index using BRF Property

        In this study, I suggest a new vegetation index to express 3 dimensional structure of vegetation. I measured BRF every real vegetation type with the observation system which utilized a RC helicopter. I made clear a difference of BRF every vegetation type from this measurement result and suggested a new vegetation index (BSI). As a result, the suggestion index was able to show a difference of shape of canopy in vegetation type of the same vegetation cover rate.

      • ROS-based control for a robot manipulator with a demonstration of the ball-on-plate task

        Robotics and automation are rapidly growing in the industries replacing human labor. The idea of robots replacing humans is positively influencing the business thereby increasing its scope of research. This paper discusses the development of an experimental platform controlled by a robotic arm through Robot Operating System (ROS). ROS is an open source platform over an existing operating system providing various types of robots with advanced capabilities from an operating system to low-level control. We aim in this work to control a 7-DOF manipulator arm (Robai Cyton Gamma 300) equipped with an external vision camera system through ROS and demonstrate the task of balancing a ball on a plate-type end effector. In order to perform feedback control of the balancing task, the ball is designed to be tracked using a camera (Sony PlayStation Eye) through a tracking algorithm written in C++ using OpenCV libraries. The joint actuators of the robot are servo motors (Dynamixel) and these motors are directly controlled through a low-level control algorithm. To simplify the control, the system is modeled such that the plate has two-axis linearized motion. The developed system along with the proposed approaches could be used for more complicated tasks requiring more number of joint control as well as for a testbed for students to learn ROS with control theories in robotics.
