Coupled experimental phase diagram study and thermodynamic optimization of the Li2 O-MgO-SiO2 system

Konar, Bikram,Kim, Dong-Geun,Jung, In-Ho Wiley (Blackwell Publishing) 2018 Journal of the American Ceramic Society Vol.101 No.4

<P>A coupled key phase diagram study and critical evaluation and optimization of all available experimental data of the Li2O-MgO-SiO2 system was performed to obtain a set of Gibbs energy functions to reproduce all the reliable phase equilibria and thermodynamic data. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements and equilibration/quenching experiments were performed in the Li2SiO3-MgO and Li4SiO4-Mg2SiO4 sections, respectively, using sealed Pt capsules to prevent the volatile loss of Li. According to the present experimental results, Li2MgSiO4 is the only compound present in the Li4SiO4-Mg2SiO4 isopleth, which shows a peritectic melting at 1465 +/- 6 degrees C (1738 +/- 6 K). The Modified Quasichemical Model, which considers short-range ordering in the melt, was employed to describe the thermodynamic properties of the liquid phase. The Li4SiO4-Li2MgSiO4 and Mg2SiO4-rich solid solutions were modeled using the Compound Energy Formalism.</P>

Two-component spatial holographic solitons supported by cross-phase modulation

        Konar, S,Jana, Soumendu,Hong, Woo-Pyo Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences 2007 Physica scripta Vol.76 No.5

<P>We have investigated two-component spatial holographic optical solitons supported solely by cross-phase modulation of two copropagating mutually coherent optical beams in the absence of the self phase modulation effects. We have identified a wide parameter space of power and spatial widths which captures the existence of a plethora of these stationary composite solitons including a bistable variety. Additionally, we have shown that these bistable solitons can exist only if their widths are above a certain minimum value. Our analytical results have been verified by direct numerical simulation of the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations.</P>

      • Critical thermodynamic optimization of the Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 system and its application for the thermodynamic analysis of the glass-ceramics

        Konar, Bikram,Kim, Dong-Geun,Jung, In-Ho Elsevier 2018 Journal of the European Ceramic Society Vol.38 No.11

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A critical evaluation and thermodynamic optimization of all available experimental data of the Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 system at 1 atm pressure was performed for the first time to obtain a set of consistent Gibbs energy functions of all phases in the system. The Gibbs energy of liquid oxide solution was described using the Modified Quasichemical Model considering the formation of LiAlO2 associate component for charge compensation effect. Various solid solutions were modeled based on their crystal structures. The obtained Gibbs energy functions can reproduce all available and reliable experimental data from 298 K to above liquidus temperatures. With the Gibbs energy description for each phase, any phase diagram and thermodynamic properties of this system and its sub-binaries can be calculated. The present thermodynamic database was applied to the thermodynamic analysis of the selective crystallization in glass-ceramics.</P>

      • Coupled experimental phase diagram study and thermodynamic modeling of the Li2O-Na2O-SiO2 system

        Konar, Bikram,Hudon, Pierre,Jung, In-Ho Elsevier 2018 Journal of the European Ceramic Society Vol.38 No.4

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A coupled experimental phase diagram study and thermodynamic modeling of the Li2O-Na2O-SiO2 system was conducted at 1atm total pressure. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements and equilibrium/quenching experiments along the Na2SiO3-Li4SiO4 isopleth were conducted using sealed Pt or Au-Pd crucibles to obtain the phase diagram data in the alkali-rich region. It is found that Li3NaSiO4 is the only compound present in the ternary system. Using all available and reliable phase diagram data in the literature and the present new phase diagram results, the thermodynamic optimization of the Li2O-Na2O-SiO2 system was carried out to obtain a set of Gibbs energy functions for the liquid phase and all solid phases to reproduce the phase equilibria of the present system.</P>

Passive control of seismically excited structures by the liquid column vibration absorber

Konar, Tanmoy,Ghosh, Aparna Dey Techno-Press 2010 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.36 No.5

The potential of the liquid column vibration absorber (LCVA) as a seismic vibration control device for structures has been explored in this paper. In this work, the structure has been modeled as a linear, viscously damped single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system. The governing differential equations of motion for the damper liquid and for the coupled structure-LCVA system have been derived from dynamic equilibrium. The nonlinear orifice damping in the LCVA has been linearized by a stochastic equivalent linearization technique. A transfer function formulation for the structure-LCVA system has been presented. The design parameters of the LCVA have been identified and by applying the transfer function formulation the optimum combination of these parameters has been determined to obtain the most efficient control performance of the LCVA in terms of the reduction in the root-mean-square (r.m.s.) displacement response of the structure. The study has been carried out for an example structure subjected to base input characterized by a white noise power spectral density function (PSDF). The sensitivity of the performance of the LCVA to the coefficient of head loss and to the tuning ratio have also been examined and compared with that of the liquid column damper (LCD). Finally, a simulation study has been carried out with a recorded accelerogram, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the LCVA.

      • Gynecological Malignancies: Epidemiological Characteristics of the Patients in a Tertiary Care Hospital in India

Sarkar, Madhutandra,Konar, Hiralal,Raut, D.K. Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.6

Background: This cross-sectional observational study was undertaken to identify the epidemiological characteristics of patients with gynecological malignancies in India, in relation to gynecological cancer risk. Methods: In the gynecology out-patient clinic of a tertiary care hospital in Kolkata, India, the patients with suggestive symptoms of gynecological malignancies were screened. One hundred thirteen patients with histopathologically confirmed gynecological malignancies were interviewed. Results: More than two-thirds of the cases (69.0%) occurred in the age range of 35-64 years and the same proportion of patients was from rural areas. Almost all the patients were "ever-married" (96.5%). More than half (54.9%) were illiterate/just literate. Nearly two-thirds (64.6%) were parity 3 or higher. Among the 18 patients with history of multiple sexual partners of the husband, 94.4% (17) were suffering from cervical malignancy, along with all the 3 patients with history of STD syndromes (sexually transmitted diseases) of their husbands. No one had given a history of condom use by her husband. Most of the patients (91.1%) used old / reused cloth pieces during menstruation. Conclusions: There is a need to increase awareness among women and the broader community about different epidemiological factors that may be responsible for increased risk of gynecological malignancies.

      • Clinico-pathological Features of Gynecological Malignancies in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Eastern India: Importance of Strengthening Primary Health Care in Prevention and Early Detection

Sarkar, Madhutandra,Konar, Hiralal,Raut, Deepak Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.6

Background: This cross-sectional observational study was undertaken to establish clinico-pathological characteristics of patients with gynecological malignancies, focusing mainly on symptoms, histological type and stage of the disease at presentation, in a tertiary care setting in Eastern India. Materials and Methods: In the gynecology out-patient clinic of a tertiary care hospital in Kolkata, India, the patients with suggestive symptoms of gynecological malignancies were screened. Their diagnoses were confirmed by histopathology. One hundred thirteen patients with histopathologically confirmed gynecological malignancies were interviewed. Results: The most frequently reported symptoms by the patients with histopathologically confirmed gynecological malignancies were excessive, offensive with or without blood stained vaginal discharge (69.0%), irregular, heavy or prolonged vaginal bleeding (36.3%) and postmenopausal bleeding (31.9%). The majority of the patients (61.0%) had squamous cell carcinoma on histopathological examination, followed by adenocarcinoma (30.1%). Nearly half of the patients (48.7%) were suffering from the Federation Internationale des Gynaecologistes et Obstetristes (FIGO) stage III, followed by stage II (40.7%) malignancy. Conclusions: This study highlights that most of the patients with gynecological malignancies present late at an appropriate health care facility. Ovarian cancer may often have non-specific or misleading symptomatic presentation, whereas cervical cancer often presents with some specific symptoms. These observations point to the need for increasing awareness about gynecological malignancies in the community and providing easily accessible adequate facilities for early detection and treatment of the disease by optimal use of available resources, i.e. strengthening the primary health care system.
