There are factors that condition the evolution of regional disparities in a country. In Mexico, the manufacturing sector has moved towards a regionalization of production. The objective of this research is to analyze theoretically the integration, evolution and interregional competition in the Mexican manufacturing sector, the disparities in its socioeconomic development and the measurement of the economic and social transformation from 1993 to 2008. The results show that the dynamism of the sector was based on the use of the conjunctures generated by the convergence of the productivity levels of the Japanese and European North American industries, resulting in increased competitive pressures. The productivity and growth of the sector does not ensure that social and economic levels are reached that indicate a sustained regional development process; hence, it is necessary to initiate a de-localization process or to establish new industries with a certain degree of spatial dispersion.
