표현의 자유란 서구 모더니즘의 기본 개념 중 하나일 뿐만 아니라 이미 오래 전부터 동아시아 전통 미술에서도 존재해 온 것으로서, 보편적이고 근본적인 개념이라고 할 수 있다. 표현의 자유는 회화와 같은 2차원 매체에서 가장 잘 이루어 지는데, 최근 몇십 년간 드로잉 분야에서도 두드러지게 나타나고 있다. 드로잉은 현재 동시대 미술에서 주요 매체로서의 지위를 차지하고 있다. 그러나 드로잉이 가지고 있는 사회적이고 이론적인 영향력에 대해서는 명확하게 밝혀지지 않았다. 더욱 중요하게 여길 만한 점은 자유로운 표현이 용이한 드로잉이라는 방식이 갖는 정치적인 영향력이 아직 폭넓게 인식되지 않았다는 것이다. 공과 사, 표현과 절제, 정보와 직관, 개인과 정치에서의 다양한 담론을 일으킬 수 있는 드로잉의 특유한 능력은 좀더 깊이 탐구될 만한 가치가 있다. 추상표현주의에서의 자유로운 표현이라는, 당시 논쟁거리였던 개념을 비판하기 위해 1960년대 개념 미술가들은 드로잉의 미약한 지위를 이용하면서 처음으로 드로잉의 가능성을 확장시켰다. 핸드 드로잉 애니메이션 작업으로 잘 알려진 남아프리카 공화국의 윌리엄 켄트리지 같은 동시대 실천가들은 드로잉을 새로운 방향으로 이끌었다. 켄트리지는 20세기 초반 모더니즘에서 개척된 드로잉의 표현적인 가능성을 활용하여 드로잉을 확장된 사회적 장으로서 개념화시켰다. 그것은 매체를 역사적으로 정의해 온 정치적 문맥에 의문을 제기하기 위해, 그리고 미술계라는 제한된 영역을 넘어 세상의 복잡성을 기록하기 위해서였다. Freedom of expression is a foundational concept of Western modernism. It is closely associated with the two-dimensional mediums of painting and, it has become especially clear in the past few decades, drawing. Drawing has now achieved the status of a major medium in contemporary art; yet the social and theoretical implications of this remain unclear. More importantly, the political implications of its association with free expression have not been widely recognized. Drawing’s unique ability to evoke divergent discourses of public and private, expression and control, information and intuition, the personal and the political, deserves exploration in depth. Conceptual artists first expanded the possibilities for drawing in the 1960s, making use of its marginal status to critique the polemical free expression of abstract expressionism. Contemporary practitioners such as South African artist William Kentridge, known for his hand-drawn animations, have taken drawing in a new direction. Making use of the expressive possibilities pioneered in early 20th-century modernism, Kentridge conceptualizes drawing as an expanded social field to question the political contexts that have defined the medium historically and explore its possibilities for registering the complexity of recent events beyond the limited scope of the art world.
