As the rising attention to the medical and healthcare issue, Bio-MEMS (Micro electro mechanical systems) platform such as bio sensor, cell culture system, and microfluidics device has been studied extensively. Bio-MEMS platform mostly has high resolution structure made by biocompatible material such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). In addition, three dimension structure has been applied to the bio-MEMS. Lithography can be used to fabricate complex structure by multiple process, however, non-rectangular cross section can be implemented by introducing optical apparatus to lithography technic. X-ray lithography can be used even for sub-micron scale. Here in, we demonstrated lines with round shape cross section using the tilted gold absorber which was deposited on the oblique structure as the X-ray mask. This structure was used as a mold for PDMS. Molded PDMS was applied to the cell culture platform. Moreover, molded PDMS was bonded to flat PDMS to utilize to the sub-micro channel. This work has potential to the large area bio-MEMS.
파장가변형 레이저 흡수 분광법을 이용한 대기압에서의 N₂O 농도 실시간 측정에 관한 연구

지구온난화를 야기하는 가스 중 이산화탄소(CO₂)를 제외한 가스(Non-CO₂ greenhouse gas)는 메탄(CH₄), 아산화질소(N₂O), 불화 가스 류(PFCs, HFCs, SF6, NF₃) 등이 있다. Non-CO₂ gas의 경우, CO₂보다 실질적인 배출량은 적지만, 지구온난화지수가 높아 지구온난화에 큰 영향을 끼치고 있는 가스들로 저감기술을 통해 오히려 더 큰 효과를 볼 수 있는 가스들이다. N₂O는 지구온난화지수(Global Warming Potential, GWP) 310이며, 국내 온실가스 배출량의 2.6%를 차지하는 가스다. 우리나라 반도체/디스플레이 기술은 세계적으로 인정받고 지속적인 성장세를 이어가고 있지만, 동시에 환경오염 등의 문제점 또한 야기하고 있다. 특히 반도체 산업에서는 N₂O를 증착공정(Deposition process) 등 다양한 공정에서 사용하며, 공정에서 배출되는 가스는 스크러버(Scrubber)를 통해 저감시킨다. 이때 N₂O의 농도를 효과적으로 저감시키기 위해서는 실시간 측정을 통해 스크러버를 제어하는 기술이 필요하다. 파장가변형 레이저 흡수 분광법(Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy, TDLAS)은 실시간으로 정량적인 농도 및 온도 측정이 가능한 비접촉식 측정법으로, 실시간 측정을 통해 스크러버의 성능을 향상시킬 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 상압에서 TDLAS를 이용하여 N₂O를 측정하기 위해, 비교적으로 선강도가 강하고 다른 가스들의 간섭이 없는 중적외선 영역대의 파장 8.31㎛ Laser를 이용하여 실시간으로 측정 및 분석하였다.
Prosthetic management of a growing patient with Russell-Silver syndrome: a clinical report

Russell-Silver syndrome (RSS) is a congenital disease characterized by short stature due to growth hormone deficiency, physical asymmetry, inverted triangular face, micrognathia, prominent forehead, and hypodontia. This case report presents a prosthetic management of a 6-year-old patient with Russell-Silver syndrome treated with overdentures on the maxilla and the mandible using the remaining primary teeth. Subsequent and comprehensive dental management considering the growth and development of a young patient will be necessary.

<P><I>Abies koreana</I> Wilson (<I>A. koreana</I>) is a shrub or broadly pyramidal evergreen tree endemic in the mountainous regions of South Korea. We obtained the essential oil (EO) from alpine needle leaves of <I>A. koreana</I> by the supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) method. EO was analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and 68 compounds were identified constituting 95.66% of the oil. The major components were elemol (11.17%), terpinen-4-ol (9.77%), sabinene (8.86%), 10(15)-cadien-4-ol (7.16%), α-terpineol (6.13%), α-pinene (6.07%) and γ-terpinene (4.71%). To investigate the memory-enhancing effects, we conducted a passive avoidance test using a scopolamine (1 mg/kg, ip)-induced amnesia mouse model. A peritoneal injection of EO from <I>A. koreana</I> (100 mg/kg) showed a memory enhancing effect of 72.7% compared with the control. These results suggest that EO of <I>A. koreana</I> may be a useful therapeutic agent against such amnesia-inducing diseases as Alzheimer and vascular dementia.</P>
CNT-Au nanocomposite deposition on gold microelectrodes for improved neural recordings

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Microelectrode arrays (MEAs) are widely used in neural recordings of cultured neurons and neural tissues. The impedance of neural electrodes is an important factor because it determines the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the recorded neural signals. Here, we developed a modified technique using CNT-Au nanocomposites (CANs) for MEAs. The impedance of CAN-modified microelectrodes was greatly decreased <I>versus</I> pure gold microelectrodes due to their large electrochemical surface area (ESA). Importantly, when compared in terms of “impedance with respect to surface area” with previous reports, the value was 8.8MΩμm<SUP>2</SUP>, which is outstanding. Cultured neurons showed good viability and the SNR (average SNR=92) of recorded neural signals with CAN-modified microelectrodes was sufficiently high compared with previous studies. This modified technique will provide a significant advancement in MEA chips and could also be applied to various neural electrodes, such as Si electrodes, multiple site electrodes, and tetrodes.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The hierarchical structure was developed using CANs to enhance the electrochemical surface area (ESA) of MEA electrode. </LI> <LI> The MEA impedance modified with CANs was reduced by approximately 99.3% compared with pure gold microelectrode, and the impedance magnitude was around 50kΩ. </LI> <LI> Comparing the “impedance with respect to surface area (=ІZІ<SUB>at1kHz</SUB> ×surface area)” with previous studies, <B> <I>the value of our results is ranked third in the 11 previous studies</I> </B>. </LI> <LI> <B> <I>The recording performance</I> </B> (peak amplitude: 340–470μV<SUB>pp</SUB>, noise level: 3.5-5.3μV<SUB>rms</SUB>) <B> <I>is outstanding compared to previous reports</I> </B> (peak amplitude: 100–500μV<SUB>pp</SUB>, noise level: 3–5μV<SUB>rms</SUB>). </LI> </UL> </P>
