Generalized $(C,r)$-Hankel operator and $(R,r)$-Hankel operator on general Hilbert spaces

Hankel operators and their variants have abundant applications in numerous fields. For a non-zero complex number $r$, the $r$-Hankel operators on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ define a class of one such variant. This article introduces and explores some properties of two other variants of Hankel operators namely $k^{th}$-order $(C,r)$-Hankel operators and $k^{th}$-order $(R,r)$-Hankel operators $(k \geq 2)$ which are closely related to $r$-Hankel operators in such a way that a $k^{th}$-order $(C,r)$-Hankel matrix is formed from $r^k$-Hankel matrix on deleting every consecutive $(k-1)$ columns after the first column and a $k^{th}$-order $(R, r^k)$-Hankel matrix is formed from $r$-Hankel matrix if after the first column, every consecutive $(k-1)$ columns are deleted. For $|r| \neq 1$, the characterizations for the boundedness of these operators are also completely investigated. Finally, an appropriate approach is also presented to extend these matrices to two-way infinite matrices.
Decline in Pulmonary Function Tests after Menopause

Objectives: Menopause is the permanent cessation of menstruation resulting from the loss of ovarian follicular activity. There is limited and conflicting evidence for an association between lung function and menopause. The purpose of this study is to evaluate Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) in postmenopausal women. Methods: Digital Spirometer was used to measure PFTs in premenopausal (n = 49) and postmenopausal (n = 46) women. Results: Significant decline in many PFT parameters was observed. Conclusions: Menopausal status is associated with low lung function. (J Menopausal Med 2018;24:34-40)
Bipartite clavicular attachment of the sternocleidomastoid muscle: a case report

Morphological variations of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle assume relevance during attempted surgical interventions in the cervical region. The present study reports bipartite clavicular attachment of the SCM in the neck of an adult male cadaver during performance of a routine anatomy demonstration. The anomaly was unilaterally observed on the left side of the neck. The clavicular head of the muscle exhibited two bellies, one medial and one lateral. While the medial belly was fused with the sternal head, the lateral belly appeared to blend with the medial. Cranially, the SCM attached to the mastoid process and superior nuchal line. We have attempted to elucidate the embryological basis of the above muscular variant. Additionally, we discuss its clinical relevance, highlighting the utility of the SCM in various reconstructive procedures. We assert that detailed anatomical knowledge of such SCM variants is of utility not only to the gross anatomist, but also for neck and orthopaedic surgeons and anaesthetists. Moreover, radiologists require familiarity with such aberrations to decipher magnetic resonance imaging scans of the cervical region.
Hypoglycemic effect of a polyherbal aqueous extract in experimentally induced diabetic rats

The present study was carried out to investigate the hypoglycemic effect of a polyherbal aqueous extract (Curcuma longa Linn., Emblica officinalis Gaertn., Trigonella foenum-graecum Linn., Enicostemma littorale Blume) in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Short term experiments showed a decrease in blood glucose levels at $2^{nd}\;hr$ of administration of the aqueous extract in alloxan-induced diabetic rats with increase in serum insulin levels. The extract did not show any effect on blood glucose or serum insulin levels in normoglycaemic rats. Treatment with the extract (1.5 g dry plant equivalent extarct/100 g body weight/day) for 20 days in diabetic rats showed a significant decrease in blood glucose and glycosylated haemoglobin levels and an increase in serum insulin levels. The aqueous extract also showed an enhanced glucose-induced insulin release at 11.1 mM glucose from isolated rat pancreatic islets. The extract did not show any toxicity at the particular dose used.
Compositional Correlations in Canine Genome Reflects Similarity with Human Genes

The base compositional correlations that hold among various coding and noncoding regions of the canine genome have been analysed. The distribution pattern of genes, on the basis of $GC_3$ composition, shows a wide range similar to that observed in human. However the occurrence of maximum number of genes was observed in the range of 65-75% of $GC_3$ composition. The correlation between the coding DNA sequences of canine with the different noncoding regions (introns and flanking regions) is found to be significant and in many cases the degree of correlation show similarity to human genome. We found that these correlations are not limited to the GC content alone, but is holding at the level of the frequency of individual bases as well. The present study suggests that canines ideally belong to the predicted 'general mammalian pattern' of genome composition along with human beings.

<P>A KB cancer cell-selective, liquid crystal microdroplets emulsion is prepared using folic acid-conjugated block copolymers (PS-<I>b</I>-PAA-FA) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a mediator to induce configurational transitions in 4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) liquid crystal microdroplets emulsion. The prepared liquid crystal microdroplets emulsion has shown a configurational transition from radial to bipolar on interacting with KB cancer cells, but no transition from radial to bipolar configuration is observed when liquid crystal microdroplets emulsion was allowed to interact with other normal cells such as fibroblast and osteoblast. The KB cancer cell selectivity of liquid crystal microdroplets emulsion has been considered due to the presence of KB cancer cell folate receptor-specific ligand (FA) at the surface of liquid crystal microdroplets, which allowed liquid crystal microdroplets to interact specifically with KB cancer cells. The ligand–receptor interactions have been considered responsible for triggering the configurational transitions from radial to bipolar in liquid crystal microdroplets emulsion. Thus, folate ligand anchored liquid crystal microdroplets emulsion has shown a potential to be used for <I>in vitro</I> detection of KB cancer cells in the early stage of tumor development.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/langd5/2014/langd5.2014.30.issue-35/la502032k/production/images/medium/la-2014-02032k_0010.gif'></P>

The antidiabetic efficacy of Enicostemma littorale Blume (chhota chirayata) aqueous extract was examined in newly diagnosed non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients taking only the extract and was administered as two divided doses, half an hour before meal as 5g of aqueous extract per single dose. Out of the 20 patients volunteered, 11 successfully completed the 2 month trial and a significant decrease in fasting & postprandial blood glucose and glycosylated haemoglobin levels were observed along with a significant improvement in the antioxidant parameters of the patients. There was also a significant increase in serum insulin levels in 7 patients after extract treatment as compared to levels before treatment. Serum total cholesterol and serum triglyceride levels were decreased significantly with a significant increase in serum HDLCholesterol levels. Other vital parameters remained stable and no side effects were observed. This is the first report showing the hypoglycemic, antioxidant and hypolipidemic properties of the aqueous extract of E. littorale Blume in non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus patients.
