<P>Silicon nanoparticles trapped in an ordered mesoporous carbon composite were prepared by a one-step self-assembly with solvent evaporation using the triblock copolymer Pluronic F127 and a resorcinol–formaldehyde polymer as the templating agent and carbon precursor respectively. Such a one-pot synthesis of Si/ordered mesoporous carbon nanocomposite is suitable for large-scale synthesis. Characterization confirmed that the Si nanoparticles were trapped in the ordered mesoporous carbon, as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction analysis and nitrogen sorption isotherms. The composite showed a high reversible capacity above 700 mA h g−1 during 50 cycles at 2 A g−1. The improved electrochemical performance of the composite can be ascribed to the buffering effect of spaces formed in the ordered pore channels during the volume expansion of silicon and the rapid movement of lithium ions through the uniform cylindrical pore structure of the mesopores.</P>

Purpose: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) assessment test (CAT) is widely used to measure quality of life in COPD. This tool is also one of determinants of COPD severity to guide COPD management. This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of COPD patients according to CAT score level measured at baseline. Method: COPD patients with CAT score measured at baseline were retrospectively identified from COPD registry of Samsung Medical Center between February 2016 and April 2019. COPD was defined as post-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1)/ forced vital capacity (FVC) < 0.7 and age ≥ 40 years. Patients were grouped into quintiles of CAT score level. Baseline clinical characteristics and lung function parameters were compared according to CAT score quintiles. Result: A total of 725 patients were included and median (interquartile range [IQR]) CAT score was 17 (11 - 24). Median (IQR) of each CAT score quintile were 6 (4 - 8), 13 (11 - 14), 18 (17 - 19), 23 (22 - 25), and 30 (28 - 34). Age, sex, smoking history and Charlson comorbidity index score did not differ according to CAT score quintiles. Dyspnea of modified medical research council (mMRC) grade ≥ 2 and the previous history of any exacerbation significantly increased across CAT score quintiles, while post bronchodilator FEV1 and diffusing capacity of lung for carbon monoxide (DLco) significantly decreased across CAT score quintiles. Conclusion: Among the clinical characteristics of COPD patients, dyspnea, previous history of any exacerbation, post bronchodilator FEV1 and DLco were significantly associated with CAT score level.

Purpose: The recognition of bronchiectasis is growing with increasing prevalence. Recent retrospective study showed the benefit of lung function improvement with use of bronchodilator in bronchiectasis patients with obstructive spirometric pattern. However, there was no available study to evaluate the effect of bronchodilator therapy to the bronchiectasis patients with pure restrictive spirometric pattern (RSP). Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effect of bronchodilator therapy in patients with bronchiectasis and RSP. Method: A retrospective review of bronchiectasis patients diagnosed by chest computed tomography (CT) scan from January 2015 to December 2018 was performed and 356 patients showed pure RSP. Among them, 124 patients received inhaled bronchodilator therapy and performed lung function tests within 1 year before the therapy and after 3-12 months of the therapy. We compared pre and post-treatment lung function of these 124 patients. Result: The median age of the patients was 63 years and 54% of patients (67/124) were male. The median duration of inhaler therapy was 6.1 months. In PFT, the median baseline forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and ratio of FEV1/FVC were 1.68L/62.5% predicted, 2.14L/62.0% predicted, and 77.0%, respectively. After bronchodilator therapy, the median FEV1, FVC, and FEV1/FVC were 1.72L/62.0% predicted, 2.15L/61.0% predicted and 76.0%, respectively, without significant change of lung function after inhaler therapy. Conclusion: The effect of the bronchodilator might be limited in bronchiectasis patients with pure restrictive spirometric pattern.
Fabrication and design equation of film-type large-scale interdigitated supercapacitor chips.

<P>We report large-scale interdigitated supercapacitor chips based on pseudo-capacitive metal oxide electrodes. A novel method is presented, which provides a powerful fabrication technology of interdigitated supercapacitors operated by a pseudo-capacitive reaction. Also, we empirically develop an equation that describes the relationship between capacitance, mass, and sweep rate in an actual supercapacitor system.</P>
