Host People's Kindness and Migrant Workers' Cultural Adaptation: Evidence from South Korea

        Jihyun Ryou(Jihyun Ryou),Sang-Yeon Kim(Sang-Yeon Kim) 한국학술연구원 2022 Korea Observer Vol.53 No.4

This study purports to determine the predictors of migrant workers' cultural adaptation in South Korea. In the main, we examined the extent to which the level of inter-/intracultural socializing, exposure to local/native media, and host culture receptivity affect the level of cultural adaptation in cognitive, affective, behavioral domains. Potential impacts of demographic factors (e.g., age, sex, ethnicity, marital status, living alone vs. with family, education level, residency in years, perceived cultural similarity) were also explored. To find answers to the research questions, a total of 634 migrant workers from 37 different nations were reached using a snowball sampling. Surveys were collected in 12 districts of Seoul, the capital of South Korea, and 21 adjacent metropolitan areas. Results indicate that intercultural interaction with host people and media exposure to local contents tend to help improve their knowledge about South Korea (e.g., language, culture). With all else equal, migrant workers treated kindly by Koreans at the workplace and in service sectors, and those living with family, compared to those who live alone, tended to enjoy a greater satisfaction with work and life in South Korea and were more willing to stay. Practical implications for Korean policymakers include encouraging competent migrant workers to move together with the family, making administrative efforts to further simplify the documentation process, and initiating public campaigns to raise host culture receptivity among Korean citizens.

      • Hierarchical CRGK Supporting a Secure Multicast Communication for a Large Number of Users

PARK, Jihyun,LEE, Jeongsu,KIM, Jeonghyun,RYOU, Jaecheol The Institute of Electronics, Information and Comm 2010 IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS - Vol.93 No.4

<P>A multicast content service, including numerous devices, requires an efficient group key management scheme as one of its core components. The purpose of group key management is to provide a secure key-sharing scheme among the members of a group so that messages transmitted via broadcasting or multicasting are not exposed to non-members. The Chinese Remaindering Group Key (CRGK) is an efficient group key management scheme based on the Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT). It optimizes the number of re-key messages, the user-side key computation cost, and the number of stored keys. However, CRGK is not fit for a group with a large number of members because of the high computation complexity of the CRT. In this paper, we propose a Hierarchical CRGK (HCRGK) scheme that supports a group with a large number of members. We improved CRGK by adopting it to include an <I>n</I>-ary tree structure. The tree approach simplifies the group key management by distributing the group key computation to subgroups. Our scheme requires at most (log<I>mN</I> + 1) re-key messages for a group with <I>N</I> members and a short computation time even when the group is very large.</P>

Effect of Polylysine on Scrapie Prion Protein Propagation in Spleen during Asymptomatic Stage of Experimental Prion Disease in Mice

( William B Titlow ),( Muhammad Waqas ),( Jihyun Lee ),( Jae Youl Cho ),( Sang Yeol Lee ),( Dae Hwan Kim ),( Chongsuk Ryou ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2016 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.26 No.9

Prion diseases are incurable neurodegenerative disorders. Our previous study demonstrated that polylysine was effective in prolonging the incubation period in a rodent model and in alleviating the scrapie prion protein (PrPSc) burden in the brain at the terminal stage of the disease. Here, we report that intraperitoneal administration of polylysine suppresses the accumulation of prions in the spleen during the early stages of the disease. This study supports the congruence of PrPSc inhibition by polylysine in both the spleen and brain.

Morphological, microstructural, and photoluminescence characterization of heterogeneous/homogeneous TeO2 nanostructures based on effect of different N2 gas flow rates

        Na, Han Gil,Jung, Taek-Kyun,Ryou, Min,Lee, Ji-Woon,Beck, Jihyun,Hyun, Soong-Keun,Choi, Myung Sik,Mirzaei, Ali,Choe, Kyeonghwan,Kim, Hyoun Woo,Jin, Changhyun ELSEVIER SCIENCE 2017 Journal of Alloys and Compounds Vol.695 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>TeO2 nanowires with diameters ranging from a few tens to hundreds of nanometers and lengths of a few tens of micrometers were prepared by thermal evaporation of Te powder with a Co catalyst. Initially, bead-like γ-TeO2 nanoparticles on the surface of pre-formed thick TeO2 nanowires were heterogeneously formed. Subsequently, uniform thin TeO2 nanowires without the γ-TeO2 phase were homogeneously synthesized by changing only the inlet N2 gas flow rates and keeping other process parameters constant. The morphological and microstructural evolution of the two different nanomaterials was examined by X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The optical properties of the nanomaterials were also investigated using photoluminescence spectroscopy. The emission peaks in the PL measurement without the supply of N2 gas showed a synergetic effect between (1) bead-like orthorhombic γ-TeO2 nanoparticles that show two specific emission bands at 388 nm and 590 nm; and (2) uniform tetragonal TeO2 nanowires that show a characteristic emission band at 440 nm. In contrast, the pure tetragonal TeO2 nanostructures synthesized under a N2 gas flow rate of 2 standard liters per minute flow rate revealed a red-shifted emission band at 450 nm compared to heterogeneous structures of the same composition. The origins of the growth and emission mechanisms in the different TeO2 structures are also discussed.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The hybrid system of TeO2-based nanostructures was investigated. </LI> <LI> Two different TeO2 properties may have originated from different gas flows. </LI> <LI> Morphological, microstructural, and optical transition was observed. </LI> </UL> </P>

Mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs)

Prions are proteinaceous infectious particles that cause neurodegenerative diseases, such as scrapie in sheep, bovine spongiform encephalopathy in cattle and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans. Although the detailed process, regarding the abnormal conversion of prion proteins (PrP), remains to be fully elucidated, a number of environmental factors appear to affect the formation of misfolded PrP, termed PrPSc. Because oceanic algae contain mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), which exhibit cellular defensive activities under a variety of stress conditions, we investigated the level of PrPSc in prion-infected neuroblastoma cells using mycosporine-glycine, porphyra-334 and shinorine. When judged by the level of protease-resistant PrPSc in western blots, porphyra-334 and shinorine increased the level of PrPSc in cells, but mycosporine-glycine did not. The current results indicate that the MAAs tested in this study enhance the formation of PrPSc.
