Synthesis and characterization of alumina/carbon nanotube composite powders
임대순,Jeong-WookAn 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2002 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.3 No.3
Synthesis and characterization of alumina/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite powders have been investigated for production of nanotube reinforced ceramic composites. The alumina/CNT powder was prepared by catalytic decomposition of acetylene gas with iron supported on alumina. The catalyst source was iron nitrate and the iron content was controlled up to 5.0 mol % to change the CNT compositions in the composite powders. The nanotube content in the powders was determined by an elemental analyzer. The quantity and quality of the CNT in the powders have been investigated with SEM, TEM, XRD and BET. The content of CNT was increased up to 12.5 wt. % and the CNT diameter increased with increasing iron catalyst content. The surface area and carbon content analysis shows that the quality of CNT is highest at 1.0 mol % iron catalyst loading. The synthesized CNT was fairly well-dispersed in the alumina powder.
Effect of carbon nanotube additions on the microstructure of hot-pressed alumina
임대순,Jeong-WookAn 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2002 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.3 No.3
Alumina/carbon nanotube (CNT) composites with different CNT contents were fabricated by hot-pressing to investigate the effect of CNT additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites. Alumina/CNT powders were obtained by forming the CNTs with the aid of catalyst particles supported on the alumina particles. The CNT contents were varied from 0 to 12.5 wt.% by changing the content of the iron nitrate catalyst precursor. The relative densities and the matrix grain size decreased with increasing CNT content. Hardness reached a maximum with about 4 wt.% added CNT. The effect of CNT additions on microhardness was explained by the matrix microstructure and reinforcement effect of CNT.
Tribological behavior of carbon nanotube composite coatings on C/C composite
Dae-SoonLim,Jeong-WookAn 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2002 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.3 No.3
Carbon nanotube (CNT) composite coatings were applied onto C/C composites to improve their wear behavior. CNT was synthesized by catalytic decomposition of acetylene gas. The nanotube slurry was prepared by mixing CNT, phenolic resin and methanol to deposit on and infiltrate into the C/C composites. The CNT composite coatings on C/C composites were carbonized in a nitrogen atmosphere. The tribological properties were determined using a ball on disk type wear tester. The results showed that the CNT composite coating decreased the wear rate significantly and increased the friction coefficient slightly.
