Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is important crop as a staple carbohydrate sources and was regarded as domesticated in Asia region. The seed dormancy is one of the domesticated traits, and this character allows that plants survive in various environment. The degree of dormancy have been targeted for controling in breeding program while weak dormancy cause pre-harvest sprouting contrary to the nonuniform seed germination by strong dormancy. In this study, we surveyed the variation of germiability in diverse rice genetic resources including japonica and indica ecotype. Overall, the degree of seed dormancy of rice germplasm was distinguished into four groups and admixed types; first group(G-1) included accessions revealing high germiability, the accessions of second group(G-2) acquired the high germiability by after-ripening process, third group(G-3)’s accessions showed high germiability after dormancy breaking process and the accessions of last group(G-4) maintained the low germiability in spite of the dormancy breaking process. Among the 51 japonica accessions G-1, G-2, G-3 and G-4 included 15, 15, 11 and 10 accessions, respectively, and among 40 indica accessions, G-1, G-2, G-3 and G-4 groups included 15, 15, 9 and 1 accessions, respectively. Based on these primary test, we plan to detail examine the seed germiability and survey the genetic factors affecting the degree of germiability in representative accessions of each group

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are microorganisms that are believed to provide health benefits. Here, we isolated LAB from Indian fermented foods, such as traditional Yogurt and Dosa. LAB from Yogurt most significantly induced TNF-α and IL-1β production, whereas LAB from Dosa induced mild cytokine production. After 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis, a Yogurt-borne lactic acid bacterium was identified and classified as Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, and it was renamed L. delbrueckii K552 for the further studies. Our data suggest that the newly isolated L. delbrueckii can be used for the treatment of immune deficiency disorders.

Jeon, Jong-Rok,Yoon, Ho Young,Shin, Gyeong-Im,Jeong, Song Yi,Cha, Joon-Yung,Kim, Woe-Yeon The Korean Society of Grassland and Forage Science 2018 한국초지조사료학회지 Vol.38 No.3
Humic substances that can be obtained from coal resources such as leonardite in a bulk scale have been employed as crop stimulators and soil conditioners. The polymeric organics containing a variety of aromatic and aliphatic structures are known to activate plants in a multifunctional way, thus resulting in enhanced germination rate and abiotic stress resistance concomitant with induction of numerous genes and proteins. Although detailed structural-functional relationship of humic substances for plant stimulations has not been deciphered yet, cutting-edge analytical tools have unraveled critical features of humic architectures that could be linked to the action mechanisms of their plant stimulations. In this review article, we introduce key findings of humic structures and related biological functions that boost plant growth and abiotic stress resistance. Oxygen-based functional groups and plant hormone-like structures combined with labile and recalcitrant carbon backbones are believed to be critical moieties to induce plant stimulations. Some proteins such as HIGH-AFFINITY $K^+$ TRANSPORTER 1, phospholipase A2 and $H^+$-ATPase have been also recognized as key players that could be critically involved in humic substance-driven changes in plant physiology.

We identified embryo-lethal mutants of rice (<I>Oryza sativa</I>) in which T-DNAs were inserted in <I>OsMPK6</I>. Embryonic organs were absent because their development was arrested at the globular stage. Similar to observations made with <I>gle4</I>, <I>shootless</I>, and <I>organless</I>, the <I>osmpk6</I> mutations affected the initial step of cell differentiation. Expression of an apical–basal axis marker gene, <I>OSH1</I>, was reduced in the mutant embryos while that of the radial axes marker genes <I>OsSCR</I> and <I>OsPNH1</I> was not detected. The signal for <I>ROC1</I>, a protodermal cell marker, was weak at the globular stage and gradually disappeared. Transcript levels of auxin and gibberellin biosynthesis genes were diminished in <I>osmpk6</I> embryos. In addition, phytoalexin biosynthesis genes were down-regulated in <I>osmpk6</I> and a major diterpene phytoalexin, momilactone A, did not accumulate in the mutant embryos. These results indicate that <I>OsMPK6</I> begins to play a critical role during early embryogenesis, especially when the L1 radial axis is being formed.</P></▼2>

<P>OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare the incremental value of FDG PET/CT over CT for the assessment of mediastinal nodal status between patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and those with NSCLC but without IPF. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-two patients with NSCLC and IPF (mean age, 66 years) were matched to 168 patients with NSCLC but without IPF (mean age, 65 years). Patients underwent surgical mediastinal nodal staging after both integrated PET/CT and contrast-enhanced CT scans had been obtained. Histopathologic nodal assessment served as the reference standard. RESULTS: PET/CT had better specificity (91% [29/32 patients] vs 47% [15/32]; p = 0.0002) and accuracy (83% [35/42] vs 50% [21/42]; p = 0.001) than CT did in patients with IPF. In patients without IPF, PET/CT was better than CT alone with regard to sensitivity (62% [26/42] vs 40% [17/42]; p = 0.0067), specificity (96% [121/126] vs 84% [106/126]; p = 0.0002), and accuracy (88% [147/168] vs 73% [123/168]; p < 0.0001). Thus, the incremental accuracy of PET/CT, which was 33% (14/42) for patients with IPF and 14% (24/168) for patients without IPF (p = 0.0041), was mainly the result of improved specificity. CONCLUSION: PET/CT offers significantly increased accuracy versus CT in mediastinal nodal staging in patients with NSCLC and IPF compared with patients with NSCLC but without IPF, mainly because of improved specificity.</P>

<P>The conventional Phillips ethylene trimerization catalyst prepared by reacting Cr(EH) 3 (EH = 2-ethylhexanoate), 2,5-dimethylpyrrole (Me2C4H2NH), Et3Al, and Et2AlCl in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent was improved to obtain a congener composed of a new chromium precursor (EH)(2)CrOH, (Me2C4H2N) AlEt2, and Et3Al center dot ClAlEt2. Reaction of CrCl3 with 3 equiv. Na(EH) in water did not generate Cr(EH)(3), but unexpectedly produced (EH) 2CrOH. In comparison with the erratic catalytic performance of the original Phillips system, due to the ill-defined nature of the Cr(EH)(3) source (16 or 6.8 x 10(6) g per mol-Cr h depending on the source), the improved system exhibited consistently high activity (54 x 10(6) g per mol-Cr h). Reaction of (EH)(2)CrOH with (Me2C4H2N) AlMe2 center dot OEt2 afforded the dimeric Cr(II)-complex (6) coordinated by (eta(5)-Me2C4H2N)AlMe2(NC4H2Me2)and mu(2)-kappa(1):eta(2)-Me2C4H2N ligands. 6 provided highly active species when activated with Et3Al center dot ClAlEt2.</P>

Yi, Gi-Hwan,Park, Dong-Soo,Chung, Eun-Sook,Song, Song-Yi,Jeon, Nam-Soo,Nam, Min-Hee,Kim, Doh-Hoon,Han, Chang-Deok,Eun, Moo-Young,Ku, Yeon-Chung The Korean Society of Crop Science 2006 Korean journal of crop science Vol.51 No.6
It is important to understand pedigree of rice cultivars commonly used for breeding. In this paper, pedigree tables for tracking the pedigree of 17 representative rice cultivars recommended by Rural development Adminstration (RDA) were completed and analyzed using two kinds of web database system; 'IRIS' and 'RRDB'. Seven cultivars, namely, 'Sangmibyeo', 'Ilpumbyeo', 'Saegewhabyeo', 'Surabyeo', 'Shindongjinbyeo', 'Ilmibyeo' and 'Jungwhabyeo' had 'Koshihikari' on the pedigree of their ancestor. Besides 'Koshihikari', the most feguently used ancestral germplasms among the high quality rice cultivars were 'Fujisaka 5', 'Kameno o' and 'Asahi', 'Fujisaka 5' was used as ancestral parent in 12 out of 17 cultivars. Interestingly, 'Kameno o' was used in pedigree of 16 out of 17 high quality varieties and 'Asahi' was used in the ancestral pedigree of all 17 varieties. 'Hwayeongbyeo' was used as one of parent in the breeding of 'Dongjin 1', 'Hwabongbyeo', 'Saegewhabyeo' and 'Junambyeo'. 'Ilpumbyeo' was used in the breeding pathway of 'Junambyeo' and 'Saegewhabyeo', 'Mangeumbyeo' itself was not enlisted as one of high quality rice cultivars, but was used as a breeding parent of three high quality varieties, namely, 'Saegewhabyeo', 'Hwabongbyeo' and 'Nampyeongbyeo'. Incorporated with evaluation data, pedigree will provide a valuable chance to genealogical tracking of agronomic traits such as disease resistance, grain quality and etc.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have beneficial effects on intestinal health and skin diseases. Lipoteichoic acid (LTA), a cell wall component of gram-positive bacteria, is known to induce the production of several cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-8 and affect the intestinal microflora, anti-aging, sepsis, and cholesterol level. In this study, Weissella cibaria was isolated from Indian dairy products, and we examined its immune-enhancing effects. Live and heatkilled W. cibaria did not induce the secretion of immune-related cytokines, whereas LTA isolated from W. cibaria (cLTA) significantly increased the secretion of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 in a dose-dependent manner. cLTA increased the phosphorylation of nuclear factor kappalight-chain-enhancer of activated B cells, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases, and c-Jun Nterminal kinases in THP-1 cells. The secretion of TNF-α and IL-6 was also increased in the cLTA-treated mouse splenocytes. These results suggest that cLTA, but not W. cibaria whole cells, has immune-boosting potential and can be used to treat immunosuppression diseases.
