A Corpus Analysis of Hedges in Lingua Franca English
한지원(Jee-Won Hahn) 한국사회언어학회 2020 사회언어학 Vol.28 No.4
English globalization entails the use of English by speakers from mother tongues other than English. Trained and professional non-native speakers of English have reportedly achieved communicative competence owing to bilingual or multilingual experiences. Their pragmatic competence developed through diverse interactions with speakers from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds (Kecskes 2015). In this study, hedges were explored in international briefings where English was used as a lingua franca by professionals of an organization. Three hedging devices including modal verbs, modal adverbs, and pronouns were analyzed to investigate their pragmatic competence. In addition, the professional non-native English briefings were compared with the U.S. briefings for their similarities and differences. Results showed developmental patterns from learner English while they shared similarities with native data. These findings were accounted for by the varieties of English and the genre differences. Implications for pragmatic competence are discussed as well.
Pragmatic Comprehension of Conversational Implicature in L2 English: Effect of Instruction
한지원(Jee-Won Hahn) 한국영어교과교육학회 2020 영어교과교육 Vol.19 No.3
Non-native speakers of English are known to have difficulty in interpreting conversational implicatures even though they are advanced level of language proficiency (Cook & Liddicoat, 2002; Roever, 2010). The current study examines the effect of pragmatic instruction on interpreting conversational implicature, focusing on Korean EFL learners. To improve learners’ comprehension, linguistic theory, based on Grice (1975), was incorporated into classroom instruction. Activities from previous studies (Murray, 2009, 2011) were adopted and modified for college-level students. Then a brief survey was conducted to find whether the teaching of conversational implicatures was effective between the pre-test and post-test. The results of the study revealed that the mean differences between the pre-test and post-test were statistically significant. The learners performed better than before receiving the instruction. Among the types of implicatures, Pope Q and relevance-based implicatures were relatively easily recognized by the learners while indirect criticism was difficult, which was consistent with previously identified patterns (Lee, 2002; Taguchi, 2005). Pedagogical implicatures are discussed with reference to the role of linguistic theory in English education.

This study investigates interactional competence for the sake of developing complete language proficiency. As a way of responding appropriately, the speech act of commiserating is highlighted in this study. When someone details an unpleasant or unsatisfying experience, commiserating is a common reaction (Boxer 1993). Two ``troubles-telling`` situations are selected from collection and the data are compared depending on different situations. According to the findings, situational factors are found to affect the types of commiseration strategies used. When there is someone or someone`s behavior to be blamed, focusing on the offense is the most common behavior in Korean. When there`s no object to be blamed, encouraging the trouble-teller is the most preferred. A cross-cultural view has been considered in order to understand Korean data from a broad context. From this view, perspective-taking plays a role in distinguishing cultural differences in expressing empathy.
