Within the frame of the EMPIrE test, four monolithic mini-plates were irradiated in the ATR reactor. In two of them, the monolithic U(Mo) foil had been PVD-coated with Zr before the plate manufacturing. Extensive microstructural characterizations were performed on a fresh archive mini-plate, using Optical Microscopy (OM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) combined with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Electron Backscattered Diffraction (EBSD) and Focused Ion Beam (FIB)/Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) with nano EDS. A particular attention was paid to the examination of the U(Mo) foil, the PVD coating, the cladding/Zr and Zr/U(Mo) interfaces. The Zr coating has a thickness around 15 ㎛. It has a columnar microstructure and appears dense. The cohesion of the cladding/Zr and Zr/U(Mo) interfaces seems to be satisfactory. An almost continuous layer with a thickness of the order of 100-300 nm is present at the cladding/Zr interface and corresponds to an oxidized part of the Zr coating. At the Zr/U(Mo) interface, a thin discontinuous layer is observed. It could correspond to locally oxidized U(Mo). This work provides a basis for interpreting the results of characterizations on EMPIrE irradiated plates.
Frequency Offset and Channel Estimation in Cooperative Relay Networks
Kyeong Jin Kim,Iltis, R. A.,Poor, H. V. IEEE 2011 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON VEHICULAR TECHNOLOGY Vol.60 No.7

A new joint frequency offset and channel estimator for cooperative relay networks operating over time-varying multipath channels based on Gauss-Hermite integration (GHI) and approximate Rao-Blackwellization (GHI-ARB) is proposed. The resulting algorithm incorporates parallel Schmidt-Kalman filters (SKFs) to separate all interfering links at the destination receiver. In each SKF, Rao-Blackwellization is conditioned on a GHI integration point. Using the Rao-Blackwellization for the frequency offset in the Gauss-Hermite filter (GHF), a joint channel and frequency offset can be efficiently estimated by the proposed GHI-approximate Rao-Blackwellization-based SKF (GHI-ARB-SKF) in the relay network. Simulation results show the superiority of the proposed GHI-ARB-SKF over a Rao-Blackwellized unscented-Kalman-filter (GHI-ARB-UKF)-based approach.

A Reduced Feedback Precoder for MIMO-OFDM Cooperative Diversity Systems
Kyeong Jin Kim,Yijia Fan,Iltis, R. A.,Poor, H. V.,Moon Ho Lee IEEE 2012 IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON VEHICULAR TECHNOLOGY Vol.61 No.2

A new precoder that reduces the feedback overhead in an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based relay network is proposed. A joint singular value decomposition (SVD) and QR decomposition is employed on the source-destination link and the source-relay-destination link. Using the proposed precoder, only one precoding matrix needs to be fed back, independent of the total number of subcarriers. Kernel density estimation is applied to determine approximate forms of unknown distributions of the end-to-end effective channel powers obtained by this precoder. Using approximated probability density functions (pdfs) for these effective channel powers, closed-form expressions for the link achievable average sum-rate and the outage probability can be derived and then their accuracies verified via Monte Carlo simulations. The achievable sum-rates are also compared with that of SVD-based precoders and for varying codebook size.
