        Imaging Characteristics of Perosomus elumbis in a Puppy

        A 4-day-old, male Poodle dog was presented with dull, depressed and exhausted activity after the birth. On physical examination, the puppy showed arthrogryposis, muscular atrophy and no movement of hindlimbs. Palpation on dorsum revealed an absence of lumbar and sacral vertebrae. On prenatal and postnatal radiography, lumbar vertebrae, sacrum and coccygeal vertebrae were not visualized. On ultrasonography, bilateral kidney and urinary bladder were observed. On computed tomography, there were no apparent abnormalities in the forelimbs, cervical vertebrae or head, while lumbar vertebrae, sacrum and coccygeal vertebrae were not observed. At necropsy examination, the liver, stomach, intestine, kidney and urinary bladder were normal. This congenital anomaly was consistent with Perosomus elumbis. Perosomus elumbis in dogs is a rare condition of unknown etiology. In this report, Perosomus elumbis was evaluated with radiography, ultrasound and computed tomography.

      • Ginsenoside Rc Is a New Selective UGT1A9 Inhibitor in Human Liver Microsomes and Recombinant Human UGT Isoforms

        <P>Ginseng is known to have inhibitory effects on UGT1A9 activity. However, little is known about the inhibitory effects of ginsenosides, the major active compounds in ginseng, on UGT1A9 activity. In vitro investigation of UGT1A9 inhibition by ginsenosides was carried out using human liver microsomes (HLMs). Among 10 ginsenosides, ginsenoside Rc was the strongest inhibitor of UGT1A9-mediated mycophenolic acid glucuronidase activity. Further inhibition kinetic studies using HLMs suggested that ginsenoside Rc competitively and noncompetitively inhibited UGT1A9-mediated propofol and mycophenolic acid glucuronidation activities, with <I>K</I><SUB>i</SUB> values of 2.83 and 3.31 <I>μ</I>M, respectively. Next, to investigate whether the inhibitory effect of ginsenoside Rc is specific to the UGT1A9 isoform, we studied the inhibitory potency of ginsenoside Rc on nine human uridine diphospho-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) activities using recombinant human UGT isoforms. Ginsenoside Rc exhibited a 12.9-fold selectivity (which was similar to niflumic acid at 12.5-fold) for UGT1A9 inhibition. Ginsenoside Rc at 50 <I>μ</I>M also inhibited none of the other UGT isoform–specific activities above 12.0%, except for UGT1A9 (>91.5%) in HLMs, indicating that ginsenoside Rc might be used as a selective UGT1A9 inhibitor in reaction phenotyping studies of new chemical entities. Considering lower plasma concentrations (0.01 <I>μ</I>M) of ginsenoside Rc in healthy subjects and no induction potential on UGT isoforms, ginsenoside Rc does not cause pharmacokinetic drug interactions with other coadministered drugs metabolized by UGT1A9.</P><P><B>SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT</B></P><P>Ginsenoside Rc selectively inhibited UGT1A9-mediated propofol and mycophenolic acid glucuronidation activities in human liver microsomes and recombinant uridine diphospho-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) isoforms. It exhibited a 12.9-fold selectivity for UGT1A9 inhibition. Therefore, ginsenoside Rc might be used as a selective UGT1A9 inhibitor in reaction phenotyping studies of new chemical entities, such as niflumic acid.</P>

      • Traveling-wave antenna for the current drive using the fast wave in the lower hybrid-frequency range in the Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus (VEST)

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>An antenna using the fast wave in the lower hybrid-resonance frequency range is proposed for the significant attainment of the heating and current-drive efficiencies. For the operational stability regarding the change of the plasma load, the proposed antenna is designed as the combline-structure traveling-wave antenna. It consists of two tapered coaxial cables, two exciting straps of the folded-monopole structure, 12 radiating straps, 11 field isolators, and the Faraday shield. Regarding the vacuum load, the simulated and measured results show the wide impedance bandwidth (45 MHz, VSWR < 2) of the proposed antenna in conjunction with the traveling-wave-antenna structure and the folded-monopole exciting strap. Regarding the plasma load, the simulated results show that the proposed antenna provides the impedance bandwidth (35 MHz, VSWR < 2), and the fast wave is coupled with an input power from 51.5 − 90%. The measured and simulated coupling efficiencies are highly compatible in the Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus (VEST). According to the frequency-range changes, the simulated-variable range of the parallel refractive index (n<SUB>||</SUB>) is from 3 − 4.5 in the operational frequency band of 475–510 MHz.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The development of an efficient external-current-drive device is required. </LI> <LI> The Lower Hybrid Fast Wave can propagate into central region in higher-density plasma. </LI> <LI> The combline-type traveling-wave antenna (TWA) is proposed for the heating and current-drive efficiencies. </LI> <LI> The coupling research between the antenna and simulated plasma model is carried out. </LI> <LI> The simulation and experiment results are compared regarding the coupling efficiency. </LI> </UL> </P>

        National post-market surveillance assessment of veterinary medicines in Korea during 2018-2021

        Veterinary medicines have been widely used for disease protection, growth promotion, and feed efficacy development of animals. Along with development of livestock and pet industry, veterinary medicine market in Korea has increased up to 1 billion US dollar in 2021. The national post-market surveillance (NMS) assessment is important system to manage quality control of veterinary medicines that have reached the open market in Korea. In this study, post marketed veterinary medicines have been analyzed particularly for the active ingredient contents based on the rule, “Tips on animal pharmaceutical audit” and monitored the noncomplicant compounds for prevention of adverse drug event. 6,620 veterinray medicines were chosen by NVRQS-SE10-V1 software program which we developed annually in Korea during 2018-2021. The programe chooses veterinary medicines which is 70% were selected products with high sales in order, 20% were selected products with low sales randomly and 10% were noncompliant product from last year automatically, as we input year`s sales and noncompliant product data. The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) leads collection of veterinary medicines from manufacturing companies, drug stores, and hospitals. The NMS assay was analyzed particularly for the active ingredient ingredients performed using liquid and gas chromatography, titration, UV/Vis spectrophometer, pH, and bioassay in Korea Animal Health Production Association (KAHPA). A total of 129 cases were deemed noncompliant and the average noncompliance rate for veterinray medicines was 1.9%. Among noncompliant products violating regulations, the leading cause was insufficient quantity of major ingredients. The compounds found to be noncompliant most frequently were tylosin, spiramycin, ampicillin, amoxicillin and colistin, respectively In this study, we analyzed the results of post marketing surveillance assay from 2018 to 2021 particularly violation rate and pattern. The overall trend indicated gradually decreasing noncompliance rate from 2.7% to 1.6%, suggesting that the quality of veterinary medicines has improved according to the steadily NMS assay and settlement of Korea Veterinary Good Manufacturing Practice (KVGMP) system.

        Hypertrophic pyloric gastropathy with Helicobacter spp. in a dog

        A 12-year-old, castrated male, mixed dog presented with a history of gradual abdominal distention for a year and anorexia recently, with abdominal radiographs showing a gastric pylorus distention. A solitary, pedunculated, heterogeneous mass arising from the mucosal layer in the pylorus with intact wall layers was identified during ultrasound and computed tomography. The gastric muscular layer was evenly thick. After surgical excision of the mass, histological examination confirmed hypertrophic pyloric gastropathy with polypoid growth and Helicobacter spp. infiltrating the gastric mucosal epithelium. This is the first reported diagnostic imaging case of hypertrophic pyloric gastropathy with Helicobacter spp. in a dog.

        제7차 제2외국어과 교육과정과 고등학교 일본문화 교과서에 관한 고찰 1 : 『文化を知ゐ』를 중심으로

        本稿では、第7次第2外国語科教育課程においての文化教育の多様な側面とこの教育課程に合わせて初めて編纂された高校の日本文化教科書『文化を知る』の内容を分析してみた。第7次教育課程の目標をもとに編纂された教科書だけに、日本文化についての多方面の内容で構成され、学習者としては日本についての客観的な知識と日常生活文化がわかるテキストと言えよう。しかし、第7次第2外国語教育課程、なかでも「言語的材料としての文化」という項目に基づいて各章を分析した結果、第2外国語の教育でもっとも基本的な問題である「相手国の言語習慣及び行動」を理解するための内容は含まれていなかった。この点は、文化教育を通して意思疏通能力を育てると示した第7次教育課程のなかで押し立てた目標に反していることである。したがって、これから編纂される文化教科書での学習者のための言語教育についての考慮は重要な課題である。 また、教科書の内容構成の時、注意事項として示している1)学生の興味、必要、知的レベルなどを考えて意思疏通意欲を導き出せるものにする3)読み、書き、聞き、話しは連携性を持つように構成する、と示した2つの事項を、文化教科書とは言っても文化教育と言語教育とは取り離しては考えられないだけに充分考慮しなければならない。 さらに、単に他国文化を学習するだけではなく、他国文化を学習することで自国文化をより深く理解し、紹介していけるきっかけにすべきであろう。ということで、本教科書でも教師と学習者が目標文化と母文化について比較・検討しながら一緒に考えられるコーナが必要ではないかと考えられる。すなわち、母文化についてのことを主学習コーナではなく、課題学習・自律学習コーナに限定している構成を改めることが求められる。 これらの改善を通して本教科書は、第7次教育課程の目標にかなう文化教材として広く活用されよう。
