Application of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for the Treatment of Acanthomatous Epulis in a Dog

        김민수,Huisheng Xie,Yumiko Bannai 한국임상수의학회 2008 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.25 No.1

A 5-year-old male Chihuahua with oral discomfort due to the presence of a maxillary acanthomatous epulis was referred to the acupuncture service at the Veterinary Medical Center of the University of Florida. For the patient, acupuncture treatments were performed for 11 sessions, at 1 month intervals with Chinese herbal medicine. The acupuncture points and Chinese herbal medicine used were selected based on TCM principles. The selected acupoints were Zusanli (ST36), Fenglong (ST40), Gongsun (SP4), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Pishu (BL20), Weishu (BL21), Taichang (LIV3), and Baihui (GV20). In addition, the Chinese herbal formulas Nei Xiao Wan and Si Jun Zi Tang were chosen. After one year of acupuncture and administration of Chinese herbal medicine, the acanthomatous epulis was remarkably decreased in size. It is considered that the use of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine would be useful treatments of canine acanthomatous epulis.

        말의 만성요통에 대한 전침치료 효과

        김민수,Huisheng Xie,서강문,남치주 한국임상수의학회 2005 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.22 No.2

This study was performed to investigate that electro-acupuncture might relieve chronic back pain in horses. Twenty horses with chronic back pain were chosen from referring to College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida. They were assigned the patients referred to 2 treatment groups and 1 control group. The treatment group I was electrostimulated to 4 acupoints. The acupuncture points of Lumbosacral point, GV-6, BL26, and BL54 were used. The treatment group II was taken the phenylbutazone orally. Control group was administered the normal saline per oral. Back pain score system was used to evaluate the degree of back pain. The treatment group I had significant lower back pain score from two times of electroacupuncture treatment. However, the treatment group II and control group did not change back pain scores during experimental periods. Thus, Electroacupuncture treatment might be effective therapy for chronic back pain in horses.

The Use of Gui-Pi-Tang in Small Animals with Immune-Mediated Blood Disorders

        Isabelle Busta,Huisheng Xie,김민수 한국임상수의학회 2009 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.26 No.2

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is one of the most common causes of anemia in small animals and immune-mediate thrombocytopenia (IMT) is also an immune mediated disease that affects small animals. The initial treatment for IMHA and IMT is medical suppression of the immune system with glucocorticoids and other immunosuppressive drugs. However, even with appropriate treatments, some animals are not responsive to the treatment and may need further immunosuppressive therapies or some alternative medicines. An eight-year-old spayed female Siamese cat with IMHA and an eight-year-old castrated male King Charles Spaniel dog with IMT were referred to the traditional medical service of the veterinary medical center. Both animals were unresponsive to steroids or other immunosuppressive treatments. Gui-Pi-Tang, one of the traditional herbal medicines, was administered to the animals. After 1-month of Gui-Pi-Tang administration, the packed cell volume (PCV) of the cat and platelets count of the dog had showed remarkable improvement. After four months of follow up in the cat, and 18 months of follow up in the dog, the improved PCV and platelet counts of the animals were maintained normally. Therefore, Gui-Pi-Tang might be considered as an alternative treatment in small animals with immune-mediated blood disorders.

Canine and Feline Patients Referred Exclusively for Acupuncture and Herbs: A Two Year Retrospective Analysis

        Justin Shmalberg,Huisheng Xie,Mushtaq A. Memon 사단법인약침학회 2019 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.12 No.5

Acupuncture and the administration of herbal supplements are increasingly used in veterinary practice, but no retrospective studies have examined patient characteristics and treatment interventions in a population of dogs and cats presenting exclusively for such therapies. This two-year retrospective analysis of 161 referrals to an integrative medicine service at an academic teaching hospital found that dogs were more frequently treated than cats (91.9% vs. 8.1%, respectively) and that small animal patients most frequently were presented for musculoskeletal (26.7%), neurologic (16.8%), oncologic (14.9%), and dermatologic (10.6%) conditions. Cats were older than treated dogs (12.7 Æ 3.7 vs. 9.5 Æ 4.3 years) and more likely to be treated for oncologic complaints (odds ratio Z 5.6). Patients received acupuncture (95.4%), herbal supplements (76.4%), acupuncture with percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (electroacupuncture, 26.1%), and/or cyanocobalamin injections in acupuncture points (pharmacopuncture, 23.6%). Some differences were detected between treatment groups. This retrospective analysis provides a foundation for designing future prospective studies using acupuncture and herbs in dogs and cats.

Horses Referred to a Teaching Hospital Exclusively for Acupuncture and Herbs: A Three-Year Retrospective Analysis

        Justin Shmalberg,Huisheng Xie,Mushtaq A. Memon 사단법인약침학회 2019 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.12 No.5

Equine acupuncture and herbal medicine are increasingly popular and have been anecdotally used in the treatment of a number of conditions. There is, however, a lack of data on the most commonly treated conditions in horses. The medical records of 164 horses presented exclusively for acupuncture and herbal therapy over a three-year period from October 2012 to October 2015 were evaluated from a mixed animal integrative medicine service at a veterinary academic teaching hospital. Horses were presented primarily for musculoskeletal conditions (62.0%), gastrointestinal disorders (9.5%), and anhydrosis (6.1%). Nearly half of all treated horses were geldings, and the mean age of treatment was 10.7 Æ 6.5 years. The most common breeds were Warmbloods (28.2%), Quarter horses (20.2%), Thoroughbreds (17.8%), and Arabians (8.0%). Treatments included acupuncture (90.2%), herbal supplements (79.8%), electroacupuncture (69.9%), B12 injections (pharmacoacupuncture, 29.4%), or administration of autologous blood at acupuncture points (hemoacupuncture, 8.0%). Thirty-eight (38) different herbal formulas were recommended during the study period. Horses that were not provided herbal recommendations were more likely to present with gastrointestinal complaints (odds ratio Z 11.2). Sex, breed, and presenting complaint had no or minimal impact on the types of treatments performed during the visit. However, data regarding patient characteristics and presenting complaints provide novel information which can be used to design prospective clinical trials.

Effect of nano-CeO2 on cobalt-based alloy laser coatings

        Li, Mingxi,Zhang, Shihong,Li, Huisheng,He, Yizhu,Yoon, Jae-Hong,Cho, Tong-Yul Elsevier 2008 Journal of materials processing technology Vol. No.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Cobalt-based alloy coatings with/without nano-CeO2 addition prepared by a 5kW CO2 laser on Q235 low carbon steel were introduced. The effects of nanoparticles on the macro-quality, microstructure, phase composition, and wear resistance of the coatings were investigated. The microstructure and phases composition of the coatings were analyzed using Olympus-Pme-3 type microscope, Philip Xl 30 type scanning electron microscope and XD-3A type X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The wear resistance was tested using MM-200 type sliding wear machine, and the wear mechanism was analyzed by JSM-35C type scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that defect (such as crack, gas hole, etc.) -free coatings were obtained. There existed γ-Co and Cr23C6 in cobalt-based alloy coatings. Another two phases of CeCo2 and ϵ-Co were identified with nanoparticles addition. Fine microstructure and equiaxed dendrite were obtained by adding nano-CeO2. The relative wear resistance is improved with the increased amount of nano-CeO2, and the coatings with the best wear resistance when laser power was 2.0kW by adding 1.5wt.% CeO2. The mechanism was found from abrasive/adhesive wear to fretting wear. The wear resistance decreased with 2.0wt.% CeO2 addition.</P>

      • HTAP2 multi-model estimates of premature human mortality due to intercontinental transport of air pollution and emission sectors

        Liang, Ciao-Kai,West, J. Jason,Silva, Raquel A.,Bian, Huisheng,Chin, Mian,Davila, Yanko,Dentener, Frank J.,Emmons, Louisa,Flemming, Johannes,Folberth, Gerd,Henze, Daven,Im, Ulas,Jonson, Jan Eiof,Keati Copernicus GmbH 2018 Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics Vol.18 No.14

<P><p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Ambient air pollution from ozone and fine particulate matter is associated with premature mortality. As emissions from one continent influence air quality over others, changes in emissions can also influence human health on other continents. We estimate global air-pollution-related premature mortality from exposure to PM<span class='inline-formula'>2.5</span> and ozone and the avoided deaths due to 20<span class='thinspace'></span>% anthropogenic emission reductions from six source regions, North America (NAM), Europe (EUR), South Asia (SAS), East Asia (EAS), Russia-Belarus-Ukraine (RBU), and the Middle East (MDE), three global emission sectors, power and industry (PIN), ground transportation (TRN), and residential (RES), and one global domain (GLO), using an ensemble of global chemical transport model simulations coordinated by the second phase of the Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollutants (TF HTAP2), and epidemiologically derived<span id='page10498'/> concentration response functions. We build on results from previous studies of TF HTAP by using improved atmospheric models driven by new estimates of 2010 anthropogenic emissions (excluding methane), with more source and receptor regions, new consideration of source sector impacts, and new epidemiological mortality functions. We estimate 290<span class='thinspace'></span>000 (95<span class='thinspace'></span>% confidence interval (CI): 30<span class='thinspace'></span>000, 600<span class='thinspace'></span>000) premature <span class='inline-formula'>O3</span>-related deaths and 2.8 million (0.5 million, 4.6 million) PM<span class='inline-formula'>2.5</span>-related premature deaths globally for the baseline year 2010. While 20<span class='thinspace'></span>% emission reductions from one region generally lead to more avoided deaths within the source region than outside, reducing emissions from MDE and RBU can avoid more <span class='inline-formula'>O3</span>-related deaths outside of these regions than within, and reducing MDE emissions also avoids more PM<span class='inline-formula'>2.5</span>-related deaths outside of MDE than within. Our findings that most avoided <span class='inline-formula'>O3</span>-related deaths from emission reductions in NAM and EUR occur outside of those regions contrast with those of previous studies, while estimates of PM<span class='inline-formula'>2.5</span>-related deaths from NAM, EUR, SAS, and EAS emission reductions agree well. In addition, EUR, MDE, and RBU have more avoided <span class='inline-formula'>O3</span>-related deaths from reducing foreign emissions than from domestic reductions. For six regional emission reductions, the total avoided extra-regional mortality is estimated as 6000 (<span class='inline-formula'>−</span>3400, 15<span class='thinspace'></span>500) deaths per year and 25<span class='thinspace'></span>100 (8200, 35<span class='thinspace'></span>800) deaths per year through changes in <span class='inline-formula'>O3</span> and PM<span class='inline-formula'>2.5</span>, respectively. Interregional transport of air pollutants leads to more deaths through changes in PM<span class='inline-formula'>2.5</span> than in <span class='inline-formula'>O3</span>, even though <span class='inline-formula'>O3</span> is transported more on interregional scales, since PM<span class='inline-formula'>2.5</span> has a stronger influence on mortality. For NAM and EUR, our estimates of avoided mortality from regional and extra-regional emission reductions are comparable to those estimated by regional models for these same experiments. In sectoral emission reductions, TRN emissions account for the greatest fraction (26-53<span class='thinspace'></span>% of global emission reduction) of <span class='inline-formula'>O3</span>-rela

siRNA-Mediated Suppression of Synuclein γ Inhibits MDA-MB-231 Cell Migration and Proliferation by Downregulating the Phosphorylation of AKT and ERK

        Jingsong He,Ni Xie,Jianbo Yang,Hong Guan,Weicai Chen,Huisheng Wu,Zishan Yuan,Kun Wang,Guojin Li,Jie Sun,Limin Yu 한국유방암학회 2014 Journal of breast cancer Vol.17 No.3

Purpose: Synuclein-γ (SNCG), which was initially identified asbreast cancer specific gene 1, is highly expressed in advancedbreast cancers, but not in normal or benign breast tissue. Thisstudy aimed to evaluate the effects of SNCG siRNA-treatmenton breast cancer cells and elucidate the associated mechanisms. Methods: Vectors containing SNCG and negative control(NC) siRNAs were transfected into MDA-MB-231 cells; mRNAlevels were determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Cell proliferation was evaluated using the MTT assay, cell migrationwas assessed by the Transwell assay, apoptosis and cellcycle analyses were conducted with the flow cytometer, andWestern blot analysis was performed to determine the relativelevels of AKT, ERK, p-AKT, and p-ERK expression. Results:SNCG mRNA levels were significantly reduced in MDA-MB-231cells transfected with SNCG siRNA. Our results indicate that inSNCG siRNA-treated cells, cell migration and proliferation decreasedsignificantly, apoptosis was induced, and the cell cyclewas arrested. Western blot analysis indicated that the proteinlevels of p-AKT and p-ERK were much lower in the SNCG siRNA-treated groups, than in the control and NC groups. Conclusion:SNCG siRNA could decrease the migration and proliferationof breast cancer cells by downregulating the phosphorylationof AKT and ERK.
