A Semantic Study of the Translation of Homonymous Terms in Sacred Texts: the Qur’an in focus

Hossein Vahid Dastjerdi,Bahareh Zamani 세종대학교 언어연구소 2009 Journal of Universal Language Vol.10 No.1

Homonymy, as a feature of semantics, presents a challenge for translators. It has actually been argued that homonymous terms might give rise to serious problems in translation, since their occurrence in a sentence can result in a certain amount of ambiguity. On this basis, the present study aims at providing a short overview of the main theoretical issues concerning homonymy, identifying a limited number of homonymous terms in the Qur’an along with their equivalents in five well-known English renderings of this sacred Scripture, and discovering the strategies for the translation of this feature as well as determining the extent of translators’ success in avoiding ambiguity they face in performing the translation task in this respect.

Translation of Poetry: Towards a Practical Model for Translation Analysis and Assessment of Poetic Discourse

Hossein Vahid Dastjerdi,,Haadi Hakimshafaaii,Zahra Jannesaari 세종대학교 언어연구소 2008 Journal of Universal Language Vol.9 No.1

Among translation issues, poetry translation is the most problematic area challenging both translators and authorities in the field of translation studies. Translation of poetry as a yet unanalyzed ‘black box’ (Francis 2006) has been a much debated issue since olden times, with many pros and cons and dichotomist reasoning as to its possibility or impossibility. This is due to the high cultural prestige of poetry which requires time, effort and ingenuity to translate traditional rhyme, rhythm structures and the figurative language involved. In the present study, a Persian piece of poetry by the contemporary Iranian poet, Musavi Garmaroodi, A. (1984) and its English translation by Vahid, D. H. (2006) will be focused upon and descriptively analyzed at both linguistic and extra linguistic levels. 8 Towards a Practical Model for Translation Analysis and Assessment of Poetic Discourse The aim is to identify the formative elements of versified discourse in the source and target texts (ST/TT) and to arrive at a tentative model of translation analysis which can serve as a measure for translation assessment of poetic genre.

Expansion in Subtitling: The Case of Three English Films with Persian Subtitles

Hossein Vahid Dastjerdi,,Reza Rahekhoda 세종대학교 언어연구소 2010 Journal of Universal Language Vol.11 No.1

This study investigates the application of expansion in Persian subtitles of English films. More precisely, this study aims at classifying the different types of expansions used in subtitles as well as investigating the appropriateness or inappropriateness of the employment of each type, considering the time and space constraints which are peculiar to subtitling. To achieve this purpose, three English films, “The Net” (1995), “Contact” (1997), and “Mission Impossible 2” (2000), available with Persian subtitles, were selected for the study. To gather the required data, these films were watched and the Persian subtitles in which expansion had been used were identified and extracted along with their English dialogs. Then, the extracted Persian subtitles were classified based on the reason that gave rise to expansion in each case. Then, the appropriateness or inappropriateness of using expansion in the extracted Persian subtitles was descriptively investigated. Finally, an equivalent not containing any expansion was proposed for those cases in which the meaning could be fully transferred without this strategy. The findings of the study indicated that a number of reasons gave rise to the expansion of subtitles. These reasons range from explicitation (explicitation of visual, co-textual and contextual information),mistranslation and paraphrasing to subtitler’s preferences. Furthermore,it was found that the application of expansion was inappropriate in all cases except for those caused by explicitation of contextual information since correct and shorter equivalents, which were equally capable of conveying the intended meaning, could be posited for the original dialogs.

Componential Analysis of Equivalents in Multimodal Translation: A Study of English and Persian Descriptions of Historical Objects in Iranian Museum Captions

Razieh Shivaei,Hossein Vahid Dastjerdi 세종대학교 언어연구소 2011 Journal of Universal Language Vol.12 No.1

Translating the descriptions of museum objects, as a sort of multimodal translation, is now widely used in Iran. English as an international language is the target language of this type of translation which introduces historical and ancient objects to tourists. Although there are many experts of museum affairs in Iran, the significant task of translation in museums lacks language competence on the part of the native translators. In addition, this type of translation requires congruity among all museums, for in many cases the names of the same objects are translated differently in different museums. This research was thus aimed at examining the accuracy of English translations of the Persian texts written for historical objects, and suggesting a unified method for this type of translation. The necessary data were initially gathered through photographing 524 historical and ancient objects from 7 main museums in Iran. Then, the information related to the names, raw materials and types of decoration of objects, in both languages (Persian and English), were selected and their meaning components were analysed. The semantic features of both Persian and English terms and their relevant synonyms were then compared and contrasted. Finally, the English terms with the highest degree of correspondence in terms of meaning were specified as the most pertinent equivalents. The findings of the study will be offered to museums as a consistent list of Persian and English equivalents of different names, kinds of materials and types of decoration of objects. This, it is hoped, will remove inconsistency in the translations of museum items at the national level.
