        Curvature as a Measure of the Thermodynamic Interaction

        We present a systematic and consistent construction of geometrothermodynamics by using Riemannian contact geometry for the phase manifold and harmonic maps for the equilibrium manifold. We present several metrics for the phase manifold that are invariant with respect to Legendre transformations and induce thermodynamic metrics on the equilibrium manifold. We review all the known examples in which the curvature of the thermodynamic metrics can be used as a measure of the thermodynamic interaction.

      • Ferrofluid Soft-robot Bio-inspired by Amoeba Locomotion

        This paper presents a novel application based on the bio-inspired motion of the Amoeba. This research is focused on development a soft micro robot based on the Amoeba locomotion which can be named Whole Skin Locomotion. The robot is created using the fluid filled toroid method that acts as a body shaping feature with ferrofluid material placed within that is delivered to create the driving force. The passive fluid switch acts as an active sensitive liquid when a magnetic field is applied. Therefore, based on this behaviour in order to produce the driving motion external Electromagnetic coils are arranged as a wireless control and actuator. A number of motions and hindrances are currently presented to insure the principal motions of the robot. Some other approaches of ferrofluid soft-robot biomimetic inspired are also presented as well.

        SEASONAL FLUCTUATIONS AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

        The industrial revolution and the subsequent industrialization of the economies occurred first in temperate regions. We argue that this and the associated positive correlation between absolute latitude and GDP per capita are due to the fact that countries located far from the equator suffered more profound seasonal fluctuations in climate, namely stronger and longer winters. We propose a growth model of biased innovations that accounts for these facts and show that countries located in temperate regions were more likely to create or adopt capital-intensive modes of production. The intuition behind this result is that savings are used to smooth consumption; therefore, in places where output fluctuations are more profound, savings are bigger. Because the incentives to innovate depend on the relative supply factors, economies where savings are bigger are more likely to create or adopt capital-intensive technologies.       • A Compact Wall-Climbing and Surface Adaptation Robot for Non-Destructive Testing

        This paper describes the design of an umbilical-free mobile non-destructive testing (NDT) climbing robot for industrial applications that is capable of inspecting oil tanks, pipelines, petro-chemical tanks, bridges, railways, etc. The mechanical design is based on a wheeled mobile robot with magnetic adhesion forces optimised with flux concentrators. The robot carries a NDT wheel probe in order to detect weld defects, wall thickness and corrosion. The robot adapts to surface curvatures (both convex and concave and both along its length and width) and can make transitions between surfaces that have an angle of up to ninety degrees between them. The robot and an on-board NDT Flaw Detector are controlled remotely via wireless communication. Higher level commands remotely adjust NDT parameters, robot speeds, and control inspection tasks from the ground.

      • Testing and Evaluation of Foldable Biopsy Tools for Active Capsule Endoscope

        This paper describes the development of passive foldable biopsy tools and the improvements of active capsule endoscope as future medical devices for intestinal inspection. The present’s active locomotive capsule endoscope is a micro-robot that can travel along the way of the digestion system with wireless control and position abilities. The capsule endoscope has been integrated with novel micro-biopsy tools armed to extract tissue samples from the small and larger intestine. The entire capsule system has abilities of target random biopsies at any position of the intestinal system by magnetic control and shortly 3D sensor localization and position methods. The Active capsule endoscope system could reach the target place, be controlled at real-time by the doctor, and be able to cut-off and keep on-board of its body’s as much as possible of intestinal tissue for further analysis. The biopsy mechanism is a novel passive triggered mechanism with a highly accurate magnetic actuator for positional control and localization.

        Effectiveness and safety of partial nephrectomy—no ischemia vs. warm ischemia: Systematic review and meta-analysis

        Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness and safety of partial nephrectomy (PN) without ischemia compared with PN with warm ischemia for reducing the deterioration in renal function in patients with cT1 renal tumors. Materials and Methods: We conducted a systematic review that included patients over 18 years of age who underwent PN with or without warm ischemia for cT1 renal tumors. The primary outcome was impaired renal function. A search strategy was performed in MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, CENTRAL, the article reference lists, and the unpublished literature to reach saturation of the information. We assessed the risk of bias with the methodological index for nonrandomized studies (MINORS) tool, and we performed a meta-analysis according to the type of variable. Results: We found a total of 5,682 articles, of which 14 met the inclusion criteria. Seven studies evaluated renal function, identifying a difference in means (MD) of 3.50 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.16 to 5.83), favoring no ischemia. We did not find any significant differences regarding intraoperative bleeding or operative time (MD, 55 mL; 95% CI, −33.16 to 144.08; and MD, 1.87; 95% CI, −20.47 to 24.21; respectively). Conclusions: In this study, PN without ischemia showed a decrease in deterioration of the estimated glomerular filtration rate compared with warm ischemia.

        EXCHANGE INTERACTIONS IN SOFT NANOCRYSTALLINE MATERIALS

        Fe rich nanocrystals embedded in an amorphous magnetic matrix have been shown to exhibit outstanding soft magnetic properties. The cause of softness is the exchange coupling between the two-phases. In this paper some effects of the exchange coupling between the nanocrystals and the matrix are reviewed.

        Adaptation and Cross-Adaptation of Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica to Poultry Decontaminants

        Information on the potential for acquired reduced susceptibility of bacteria to poultry decontaminants occurring is lacking. Minimal Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) were established for assessing the initial susceptibility and the adaptative and cross-adaptative responses of four bacterial strains (Listeria monocytogenes serovar 1/2a, L. monocytogenes serovar 4b, Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium, and S. enterica serotype Enteritidis) to four poultry decontaminants (trisodium phosphate, acidified sodium chlorite -ASC-, citric acid, and peroxyacetic acid). The initial susceptibility was observed to differ among species (all decontaminants) and between Salmonella strains (ASC). These inter- and intra-specific variations highlight (1) the need for strict monitoring of decontaminant concentrations to inactivate all target pathogens of concern, and (2) the importance of selecting adequate test strains in decontamination studies. MICs of ASC (0.17±0.02 to 0.21±0.02 mg/ml) were higher than the U.S. authorized concentration when applied as a pre-chiller or chiller solution (0.05 to 0.15 mg/ml). Progressively increasing decontaminant concentrations resulted in reduced susceptibility of strains. The highest increase in MIC was 1.88 to 2.71-fold (ASC). All decontaminants were shown to cause cross-adaptation of strains between both related and unrelated compounds, the highest increase in MIC being 1.82-fold (ASC). Our results suggest that the in-use concentrations of ASC could, in certain conditions, be ineffective against Listeria and Salmonella strains. The adaptative and cross-adaptative responses of strains tested to poultry decontaminants are of minor concern. However, the observations being presented here are based on in vitro studies, and further research into practical applications are needed in order to confirm these findings.
