        A new and simple analytical approach to determining the natural frequencies of framed tube structures

        This paper presents a new and simple solution for determining the natural frequencies of framed tube combined with shear-walls and tube-in-tube systems. The novelty of the presented approach is based on the bending moment function approximation instead of the mode shape function approximation. This novelty makes the presented solution very simpler and very shorter in the mathematical calculations process. The shear stiffness, flexural stiffness and mass per unit length of the structure are variable along the height. The effect of the structure weight on its natural frequencies is considered using a variable axial force. The effects of shear lag phenomena has been investigated on the natural frequencies of the structure. The whole structure is modeled by an equivalent non-prismatic shear-flexural cantilever beam under variable axial forces. The governing differential equation of motion is converted into a system of linear algebraic equations and the natural frequencies are calculated by determining a non-trivial solution for the system of equations. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified through several numerical examples and the results are compared with the literature.

        Design equations for prefabricated steel moment connections

        Recently, modular prefabricated steel moment connections have been widely studied by several researchers. These connections are made of tubular columns that are ended to horizontal plates at both sides, an inter-story short column, and truss beams that are joined to the connecting plates using top and bottom plates. In this study, a series of equations have been developed and presented for designing each component of this type of connection. Then, to verify the proposed equations, the connection was modeled in ABAQUS and then the results extracted from the equations and modeling were compared. The findings indicated that the proposed equations have the required accuracy.

      • Optimization of lateral resisting system of framed tubes combined with outrigger and belt truss

        In this paper, the optimum location of the belt truss-outrigger for a combined system of framed tube, shear core and outrigger-belt truss is calculated. The optimum location is determined by maximization of the first natural frequency. The framed tube is modeled using a non-prismatic cantilever beam with hollow box cross section. The governing differential equation is solved using the weak form integral equations and the natural frequencies of the structure are calculated. The graphs are introduced for quick calculation of the first natural frequency. The location of the belt truss-outrigger that maximizes the first natural frequency of the structure is introduced as an optimum location. The structure is modeled using SAP-2000 finite elements software. In the modelling, the location of the belt truss-outrigger is changed along the height of the structure. With various locations of the outrigger, the lateral deflection of the all stories and axial force in the columns of the outer tube are calculated. The analysis is repeated by locating the outrigger-belt truss at the optimum location. The analysis results are compared and effect of the optimum location on the lateral deflection and the shear lag phenomena are investigated.

        Evaluation the behavior of pre-fabricated moment connection with a new geometry of pyramidal end block under monotonic and cyclic loadings

        Researchers have been long studying new building implementation methods to improve the quality of construction, reduce the time of assembly, and increase productivity. One of these methods is the use of modular pre-fabricated structural forms that are composed of a beam, column, short column, pyramidal end block, and connection plates. In this study, a new geometry for the pyramidal end block was proposed that helps facilitate the assembly procedure. Since the proposed configuration affects the performance of this form of connection, its behavior was evaluated using finite element method. For this purpose, the connection was modeled in ABAQUS and then validated by comparing the outputs with experimental results. The research proceeded through analyzing 16 specimens under monotonic and cyclic loading. The results indicated that using the pyramidal end block not only makes the assembly process easier but also reduces the out-of-plane displacement of the short column webs and the vertical displacement of beam end. By choosing appropriate section properties for column and beam, the connection can bear a rotation up to 0.01 radians within its inelastic region and a total of 0.04 radians without any significant reduction in its bearing capacity.

        The effect of beam section property on the behavior of modular prefabricated steel moment connection

        The specially prefabricated steel moment connections with pyramid head is one of the significant innovations in the steel structures forms to improve the installation time and simplify the construction procedure. The beams in this structure form are supported by two top and bottom angles and web double angles. Such a configuration despite its advantages increases the welding operation and filed installation time and costs. In this paper, the effect of using beams with channel and I section in three classes of seismically compact, seismically non-compact, and slender section according to width-to-thickness ratio on the behavior of the connection was investigated under monotonic and cyclic loading. Modeling was performed by ABAQUS and verified by the results of an experimental specimen. The findings indicated that using I and channel section instead of angle section reduces the amount of welding materials as well as easing the installation procedure. However, it has no significant effect on the ultimate strength and ductility of the connection. Furthermore, if the beam section is seismically compact, this form is considered as a special moment frame that has a rotation capacity up to 0.04 radians without any reduction in connection moment resistance.

        Nonlinear control of structure using neuro-predictive algorithm

        A new neural network (NN) predictive controller (NNPC) algorithm has been developed and tested in the computer simulation of active control of a nonlinear structure. In the present method an NN is used as a predictor. This NN has been trained to predict the future response of the structure to determine the control forces. These control forces are calculated by minimizing the difference between the predicted and desired responses via a numerical minimization algorithm. Since the NNPC is very time consuming and not suitable for real-time control, it is then used to train an NN controller. To consider the effectiveness of the controller on probability of damage, fragility curves are generated. The approach is validated by using simulated response of a 3 story nonlinear benchmark building excited by several historical earthquake records. The simulation results are then compared with a linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) active controller. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm is completely effective in relative displacement reduction.

      • Numerical and experimental behavior of moment concrete frame retrofitted with TADAS metal yielding damper under lateral loading

        Since the cost of reconstruction is very high and the structure may have been damaged by an earthquake, we must retrofit the structure. Therefore, the importance of studying this issue is very high in order to achieve the desired resistance against the regulations. The present study involved the numerical and experimental analysis of nine concrete frames, consisting of three concrete frames, three concrete frames with bracing, and three concrete frames with a TADAS damper. The purpose of this study is to strengthen the damaged concrete frame using braces and TADAS dampers. Observations were made of the frames as they were subjected to controlled displacement. Also, ABAQUS software was used to compare numerical and experimental results. According to the results, the software was sufficiently capable of modeling the studied frames. Additionally, a parametric study was conducted on the thickness and number of bending plates. Thickness increases from 8 mm to 12 mm, 8 mm to 15 mm, and 8 mm to 20 mm, increasing the base shear by about 6.7%, 11.1%, and 25%, respectively. Furthermore, increasing the number of plates from 4 to 5, 4 to 6, and 4 to 7 increased base shears by about 4.5%, 8.4%, and 14%, respectively.
