        Differential Diagnosis of a Left Atrial Mass after Surgical Excision of Myxoma: a Remnant or a Thrombus?

        1Division of Cardiology, Department of Internal Medicine, 2Department of Internal Medicine, Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea Echocardiographic diagnosis of atrial myxoma may not always be straightforward, and the distinction between myxoma and thrombi is not easy, especially when we observe a mass after successful surgery. Our report describes a 72-year-old woman who presented with right upper limb hemiparesis and was subsequently diagnosed as having transient ischemic attack due to a left atrial myxoma. One month after successful surgical resection of the tumor, the patient developed left-sided weakness. Echocardiography revealed a left atrial mass attached to the interatrial septum. Intravenous heparin was administered as a therapeutic trial for postoperative thrombi, which resulted in a decrease in mass size within a week. Anticoagulation with warfarin was continued, and complete resolution was demonstrated on a 4-month follow-up transesophageal echocardiography. This case highlights the fact that thrombus formation at the surgical site should be considered an unusual but potential complication after surgical resection of left atrial myxomas.

      • Electrical modulation of a photonic crystal band-edge laser with a graphene monolayer

        <P>The electrical control of photonic crystal (PhC) lasers has been an attractive but challenging issue. Laser operation by electrical injection is of key importance for the viability and applicability of the PhC lasers. Another key factor is the electrical modulation of the laser output. The Fermi level of a graphene monolayer can be controlled by electrical gating, which adjusts its optical absorption. In this study, a graphene monolayer sheet is integrated on top of a two-dimensional PhC structure composed of InGaAsP multiple-quantum-wells (MQWs) in order to demonstrate the electrical modulation of a high-power (microwatt-scale) PhC band-edge laser. The introduced dielectric spacer layer presets the delicate balance between the optical gain from the MQWs and optical loss at the graphene monolayer. The proposed device is covered by an ion-gel film, which enables a low-voltage laser modulation at |<I>V</I>g|≤1 V. The modulation is extensively investigated experimentally, and the obtained results are confirmed by performing numerical simulations.</P>

        Fault Diagnosis of Ball Bearings within Rotational Machines Using the Infrared Thermography Method

        In this paper, the novel approach for the fault diagnosis of the bearing equipped with rotational mechanical facilities was studied. As research works, by applying the ball bearing used extensively in many industrial fields, experiments were conducted in order to propose the new prognostic method about the condition monitoring for the rotational bodies based on the condition analysis of infrared thermography. Also, by using the vibration spectrum analysis, the real time monitoring was performed. As results, it was confirmed that infrared thermography method could be adapted into monitor and diagnose the fault for bearing by evaluating quantitatively and qualitatively the temperature characteristics according to the condition of the ball bearing.
