        Two-Stream Convolutional Neural Network for Video Action Recognition

        Video action recognition is widely used in video surveillance, behavior detection, human-computer interaction, medically assisted diagnosis and motion analysis. However, video action recognition can be disturbed by many factors, such as background, illumination and so on. Two-stream convolutional neural network uses the video spatial and temporal models to train separately, and performs fusion at the output end. The multi segment Two-Stream convolutional neural network model trains temporal and spatial information from the video to extract their feature and fuse them, then determine the category of video action. Google Xception model and the transfer learning is adopted in this paper, and the Xception model which trained on ImageNet is used as the initial weight. It greatly overcomes the problem of model underfitting caused by insufficient video behavior dataset, and it can effectively reduce the influence of various factors in the video. This way also greatly improves the accuracy and reduces the training time. What’s more, to make up for the shortage of dataset, the kinetics400 dataset was used for pre-training, which greatly improved the accuracy of the model. In this applied research, through continuous efforts, the expected goal is basically achieved, and according to the study and research, the design of the original dual-flow model is improved.

        A Wide-range Tunable Wavelength-stabilization Technique for Semiconductor Lasers

        This paper presents a wide-range tunable wavelength-locking technology based on optoelectronic oscillation (OEO) loops for optical fiber sensors and microwave photonics applications, explains the theoretical fundamentals of the design, and demonstrates a method for locking the relative wavelength differences between a leader semiconductor laser and its follower lasers. The input of the OEO loop in the proposed scheme (the relative wavelength difference) determines the radio-frequency (RF) signal frequency of the oscillation output, which is quantized into an injection current signal for feedback to control the wavelength drift of follower lasers so that they follow the wavelength change of the leader laser. The results from a 10-hour continuous experiment in a field environment show that the wavelength-locking accuracy reached ±0.38 GHz with an Allan deviation of 6.1 pm over 2 hours, and the wavelength jitter between the leader and follower lasers was suppressed within 0.01 nm, even though the test equipment was not isolated from vibrations and the temperature was not controlled. Moreover, the tunable range of wavelength locking was maintained from 10 to 17 nm for nonideal electrical devices with limited bandwidth.

      • Prognostic Significance of Beclin-1 Expression in Colorectal Cancer: a Meta-analysis

        Objective: Beclin-1 has recently been observed as an essential marker of autophagy in several cancers. However, the prognostic role of Beclin-1 in colorectal neoplasia remains controversial. Our study aimed to evaluate the potential association between Beclin-1 expression and the outcome of colorectal cancer patients. Materials and Methods: All related studies were systematically searched in Pubmed, Embase, Springer and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure databases (CNKI), and then a meta-analysis was performed to determine the association of Beclin-1 expression with clinical outcomes. Finally, a total of 6 articles were included in our analysis. Results: Our data showed that high Beclin-1 expression in patients with CRC was associated with poor prognosis in terms of tumor distant metastasis (OR=2.090, 95%CI=1.061-4.119, p=0.033) and overall survival (RR=1.422, 95%CI=1.032-1.959, p=0.031). However, we did not found any correlation between Beclin-1 over-expression and tumor differentiation (OR=1.711, 95%CI=0.920-3.183, p=0.090). In addition, there was no evidence of publication bias as suggested by Egger's tests for tumor distant metastasis (p=1.000), differentiation (p=1.000) and OS (p=0.308). Conclusions: Our present meta-analysis indicated that elevated Beclin-1 expression iss associated with tumor metastasis and a poor prognosis in patients with CRC. Beclin-1 might serve as an efficient prognostic indicator in CRC, and could be a new molecular target in CRC therapy.

        Novel blood-based hypomethylation of SH3BP5 is associated with very early-stage lung adenocarcinoma

        Background: Early detection is essential to improve the survival of lung cancer (LC). The quantitative measurement of specific DNA methylation changes in the peripheral blood could provide an efficient strategy for the detection of early cancer. Objective: We applied a candidate approach and assess the association between blood-based SH3BP5 methylation and the risk of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) in a case-control cohort. Methods: The methylation level of four CpG sites in the promoter of SH3BP5 gene was quantitatively determined by mass spectrometry in 171 very early-stage LUAD patients (93.6% LUAD at stage I) and 190 age and gender-matched controls. The logistic regression and non-parametric tests were used for the statistical analyses. Results: We observed a significant association between decreased methylation of SH3BP5_CpG_4 in the peripheral blood and increased risk of LUAD (odds ratio (OR) per-10% methylation = 1.51, P = 0.006, FDR = 0.024), and even for the LUAD at stage I (OR per-10% methylation = 1.53, P = 0.006, FDR = 0.024). Moreover, the lower quartile of SH3BP5_CpG_4 methylation was correlated with increased risk for LUAD with a P trend of 0.011. Further investigation disclosed that the hypomethylation of SH3BP5_CpG_4 was mostly associated with LUAD in younger subjects (OR per-10% methylation = 2.02, P = 0.010, age < 55 years old) and probably could be enhanced by advance stage. Conclusion: Our study revealed an association between blood-based SH3BP5 hypomethylation and very early-stage LUAD, which provides a novel support for the blood-based methylation signatures as a potential marker for the evaluation of cancer risk.

        Development of Nested PCR, Multiplex PCR, and Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification Assays for Rapid Detection of Cylindrocladium scoparium on Eucalyptus

        Eucalyptus dieback disease, caused by Cylindrocladium scoparium, has occurred in last few years in large Eucalyptus planting areas in China and other countries. Rapid, simple, and reliable diagnostic techniques are desired for the early detection of Eucalyptus dieback of C. scoparium prior to formulation of efficient control plan. For this purpose, three PCR-based methods of nested PCR, multiplex PCR, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) were developed for detection of C. scoparium based on factor 1-alpha (tef1) and beta-tubulin gene in this study. All of the three methods showed highly specific to C. scoparium. The sensitivities of the nested PCR and LAMP were much higher than the multiplex PCR. The sensitivity of multiplex PCR was also higher than regular PCR. C. scoparium could be detected within 60 min from infected Eucalyptus plants by LAMP, while at least 2 h was needed by the rest two methods. Using different Eucalyptus tissues as samples for C. scoparium detection, all of the three PCR-based methods showed much better detection results than regular PCR. Base on the results from this study, we concluded that any of the three PCR-based methods could be used as diagnostic technology for the development of efficient strategies of Eucalyptus dieback disease control. Particularly, LAMP was the most practical method in field application because of its one-step and rapid reaction, simple operation, single-tube utilization, and simple visualization of amplification products.

        Comparison of Molecular Linkage Maps and QTLs for Morphological Traits in Two Reciprocal Backcross Populations of Rice

        Comparison of maps and QTLs between populations may provide us with a better understanding of molecular maps and the inheritance of traits. We developed and used two reciprocal BC1F1 populations, IP/DS//IP and IP/DS//DS, for QTL analysis. DS (Dasanbyeo) is a Korean tongil-type cultivar (derived from an indica x japonica cross and similar to indica in its genetic make-up) and IP (Ilpumbyeo) is a Korean japonica cultivar. We constructed two molecular linkage maps corresponding to each backcross population using 196 markers for each map. The length of each chromosome was longer in the IP/DS//IP population than in the IP/DS//DS population, indicating that more recombinants were produced in the IP/DS//IP population. Distorted segregation was observed for 44 and 19 marker loci for the IP/DS//IP and IP/DS//DS populations, respectively; these were mostly skewed in favor of the indica alleles. A total of 36 main effect QTLs (M-QTLs) and 15 digenic epistatic interactions (E-QTLs) were detected for the seven traits investigated. The phenotypic variation explained (PVE) by M-QTLs ranged from 3.4% to 88.2%. Total PVE of the M-QTLs for each trait was significantly higher than that of the E-QTLs. The total number of M-QTLs identified in the IP/DS//IP population was higher than in the IP/DS//DS population. However, the total PVE by the M-QTLs and E-QTLs together for each trait was similar in the two populations, suggesting that the two BC1F1 populations are equally useful for QTL analysis. Maps and QTLs in the two populations were compared. Eleven new QTLs were identified for SN, SF, GL, and GW in this study, and they will be valuable in marker-assisted selection, particularly for improving grain traits in tongil-type varieties.

      • Identification of Quantitative Trait Loci for Cold Response of Seedling Vigor Traits in Rice

        The quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for the seedling vigor traits under 12<SUP>o</SUP>C cold water irrigation, such as the seedling height, the seedling fresh weight, the seedling dry weight, and their cold response index, were identified using an F<SUB>2-3</SUB> population including 200 individuals and lines derived from a cross of indica and japonica ''Milyang 23/Jileng 1'' with microsatellite markers. All seedling vigor traits exhibited a continuous distribution near normal in F3 lines; these traits were quantitative traits controlled by multiple genes. Twelve QTLs conferring the seedling vigor traits under cold water irrigation were detected on chromosomes 1, 2, 7, 8, and 12, which explained the observed phenotypic variance from 5.2% to 17.9%. Among them, qCSH2 and qCSH12 were located in RM262-RM263 on chromosome 2 and RM270-RM17 on chromosome 12, respectively, which were associated with the seedling height. qSDW12 and qCSDW1 were located in RM19-RM270 on chromosome 12 and RM129-RM9 on chromosome 1, respectively, which were correlated with the seedling dry weight and its cold response index, and the explained 16.6%, 17.9%, 15.9%, and 16.2% of the observed phenotypic variation, respectively. These QTLs alleles were derived from cold-tolerant parent Jileng 1; the gene actions of the two front genes showed their additive effect, and the two genes belind showed dominant and over dominant effects, respectively.

        Electrical characteristics of a discharge in saltwater

        Experiments are conducted to reveal the electrical characteristics of a pulsed discharge in saltwater. To check the influence of the electrode material on discharge, we used stainless steel, red copper, and W–Cu alloy (the content of tungsten is 80%) in our experiment. As a result, four different types of discharges are observed: a typical spark discharge, a typical corona discharge, a corona discharge with a bulge, and a mixed spark discharge. In the spark discharge mode, a RLC oscillating circuit is used to describe the current after the breakdown of the electrode gap. Previous studies were mainly done using freshwater; thus, the current in the pre-breakdown period was approximately 0. However, saltwater is full of ions and is highly conductive, which brings about the appearance of a conductive current in the pre-breakdown stage. When the conductive current is considered, we obtain the analytical expression for the current in saltwater by solving the second-order ordinary coefficient differential equation with current as a variable. In combination with the short-circuit method, the constant resistance of the plasma channel is finally calculated. Actually, the channel resistance is not always the same after the breakdown. Based on the actual resistance in the first half-cycle after the breakdown, we propose a time-varying channel resistance model. By data fitting, we determined the coefficients in the time-varying channel resistance model; we also discuss the relationship between the coefficients. The results show that the fitting curve is in good agreement with the measured one.

        Fine Mapping and Candidate Gene Analysis of the Floury Endosperm Gene, FLO(a), in Rice

        In addition to its role as an energy source for plants, animals and humans, starch is also an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels. In rice, the eating and cooking quality of the grain is determined by its starch properties. The floury endosperm of rice has been explored as an agronomical trait in breeding and genetics studies. In the present study, we characterized a floury endosperm mutant, flo(a), derived from treatment of Oryza sativa ssp. japonica cultivar Hwacheong with MNU. The innermost endosperm of the flo(a) mutant exhibited floury characteristics while the outer layer of the endosperm appeared normal. Starch granules in the flo(a) mutant formed a loosely-packed crystalline structure and X-ray diffraction revealed that the overall crystallinity of the starch was decreased compared to wild-type. The FLO(a) gene was isolated via a map-based cloning approach and predicted to encode the tetratricopeptide repeat domaincontaining protein, OsTPR. Three mutant alleles contain a nucleotide substitution that generated one stop codon or one splice site, respectively, which presumably disrupts the interaction of the functionally conserved TPR motifs. Taken together, our map-based cloning approach pinpointed an OsTPR as a strong candidate of FLO(a), and the proteins that contain TPR motifs might play a significant role in rice starch biosynthetic pathways.

        Hydrothermal synthesize and photocatalytic ability of a new silver vanadate semiconductor K<sub>2/5</sub>Ag<sub>3/5</sub>VO<sub>3</sub> with stable α-AgVO<sub>3</sub> structure

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A silver vanadate semiconductor K<SUB>2/5</SUB>Ag<SUB>3/5</SUB>VO<SUB>3</SUB> with the stable α-AgVO<SUB>3</SUB> structure has been prepared via the hydrothermal method. The structural refinements were completed. Similar to the well-known β-AgVO<SUB>3</SUB>, K<SUB>2/5</SUB>Ag<SUB>3/5</SUB>VO<SUB>3</SUB> also keeps one-dimensional crystallization habit with a high ratio of length to diameter. The surface was characterized by the SEM, TEM, energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) spectrum and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms. The UV–vis absorption spectrum shows that K<SUB>2/5</SUB>Ag<SUB>3/5</SUB>VO<SUB>3</SUB> nanowire has narrow band energy (2.02eV) characterized by indirect allowed electronic transition. K<SUB>2/5</SUB>Ag<SUB>3/5</SUB>VO<SUB>3</SUB> nanowires present a very good dispersion in water. Photocatalysis was tested by the photo-degradation of methylene blue (MB) solution.
