아프가니스탄인 유학생의 한국대학생활 적응과정에 관한 질적 사례 연구

세계화의 영향으로 인해, 한국대학에 교육받는 외국인 유학생 수가 증가하고 있다. 외국인 유학생을 더 적극적으로 유치하고자 한국은 ‘Study Korea Project’를 진행되어 오고 이들을 제대로 지도하고 지원하는 목적으로 그동안 수많은 연구도 진행되었다. 통계청에 따르면 2022년에 외국인 유학생 수는 163,697명이며, 이 중에 78명이 아프가니스탄인 유학생이다. 본 연구는 아프가니스탄인 유학생의 한국대학생활 적응과정에 관한 질적 사례 연구이다. 연구자는 5명의 아프가니스탄인 유학생을 연구참여자로 선정하여 심층면담을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 이에 따라 아프가니스탄인 유학생의 한국대학생활 적응과정은 ‘풍요로운 환경’, ‘극복하기 어려운 장벽’, ‘귀국 선택의 어려움’, ‘배우며 나아가기’와 같은 4가지로 분류되었다. 풍요로운 환경은 아프가니스탄인 유학생이 한국에서 모국과 달리, 잘 발전된 사회 경험을 포함한다. 아프가니스탄인 유학생이 한국에서 수준 높은 교육환경을 만끽하며, 종교적 의무 없는 사회 질서를 경험한다. 그리고 자유와 안전이 보장되어 있어서 개인이 자신의 가치와 목표를 인식하고 결정의 권한 갖는 것을 경험한다. 문화 차이, 학문적 수준 차이, 경제적 문제가 극복하기 어려운 장벽이다. 아프가니스탄인 유학생이 지역사회 구성원과 관계 맺는 것과 한국의 나이 문화 이해하는 것에 어려움을 느낀다. 아울러, 국적으로 인해 판단이나 무시당해서 큰 스트레스와 불안감을 경험한다. 그리고 아프가니스탄인 유학생이 종교의 차이와 히잡으로 인해 부정적인 시선을 받고 이 부분도 그들에게 극복하기 어려운 장벽이다. 귀국 선택의 어려움은 위험하고 안전하지 않은 아프가니스탄의 상황과 유학생의 선택 책임감을 포함한다. 탈레반의 재 정권으로 인해 나라가 안전하지 않고 시민들이 더 이상 근무, 교육 등 다양한 활동을 자유롭게 하지 못한다. 아울러, 탈레반에 의해 여성의 권리가 제한되어서 그들이 귀국을 두려워한다. 이런 상황에서 귀국하면 가족에게 큰 부담이 될 수 있어서 한국대학생활 적응과정이 아무리 어려워도 극복해야 하는 것을 선택한다. 그뿐만 아니라, 연구참여자들이 유학은 자기의 선택이어서 포기하지 않고 적응의 어려움을 극복하기 위해 열심히 노력한다. 배우며 나아가기는 다양한 활동을 포함한다. 첫째는 폐쇄적인 태도를 버리고 한국식 사회 질서에 순응해야 할 필요를 느낀다. 둘째, 모국의 종교적 가치관에서 벗어나고 언어장벽을 극복하는 것이 필수다. 그리고 소속 대학의 지원시스템 사용하는 것도 사회적응의 어려움을 극복하는 것에 큰 도움이 된다. 셋째, 좋고 성공적인 미래를 만들기 위해 지속적인 노력이 필요하며, 노동시장과 맞는 전공 선택하는 것이 중요하다. Globalization has made it easier for students to study abroad and it has had a profound effect on increasing international students studying at Korean universities. on the other hand, to increases the enrollment of international students in Korean Institutions, Korean government has implemented the ‘Study Korea Project’. according to the statistics from the Korean Statistical Office, in 2022, the number of foreign students attending Korean universities were 163,697, including 78 students from Afghanistan. to provide proper guidance and assistance to the foreign students, numerous studies has been conducted but the Afghan students remained unstudied. This study is a qualitative case study on the Korean University Life Adjustment Process of Afghan Students. For the purpose of fulfilling the study, five Afghan students which are attending Korean universities, were selected as participants for about six months from March to August 2022. In this qualitative study, in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted. As a result, the characteristics of Korean university life adjustment process of Afghan students are shown as ‘prosperous environment’, invincible barriers’, ‘the challenging return home’, and ‘learning and advancing’. A prosperous environment in Korea offers a great opportunity to Afghan students to study in a well-developed society and enjoy a high-quality educational environment. Also, they experience a new societal order without religious obligations. Moreover, they can experience the assurance of freedom and safety, allowing them to recognize their own values and goals and have the authority to make decisions. Cultural differences, disparities in academic standards, and financial challenges pose the significant barriers that are difficult to surmount. these barriers prevent Afghan students to establish relationships with the local community. Additionally, they experience significant stress and anxiety due to judgment and disregard based on their nationality and religious differences. The challenging return home include the dangerous and unsafe situation in Afghanistan and the responsibility of the students for their choice. Due to the Taliban regime, the country is no longer safe, and people, specially women are not allowed to work and study. Due to restrictions on women’s right imposed by the Taliban, they fear returning home. despite the challenges of adjusting to Korean society, they tend to stay and overcome them. Furthermore, the participants in the study, considering studying abroad as their own choice, make diligent efforts to overcome the difficulties of adjustment without giving up.
