Degradation of Chlorinated Phenols by Zero Valent Iron and Bimetals of Iron: A Review

        Buddhika Gunawardana,Naresh Singhal,Peter Swedlund 대한환경공학회 2011 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.16 No.4

Chlorophenols (CPs) are widely used industrial chemicals that have been identified as being toxic to both humans and the environment. Zero valent iron (ZVI) and iron based bimetallic systems have the potential to efficiently dechlorinate CPs. This paper reviews the research conducted in this area over the past decade, with emphasis on the processes and mechanisms for the removal of CPs, as well as the characterization and role of the iron oxides formed on the ZVI surface. The removal of dissolved CPs in iron-water systems occurs via dechlorination, sorption and co-precipitation. Although ZVI has been commonly used for the dechlorination of CPs, its long term reactivity is limited due to surface passivation over time. However, iron based bimetallic systems are an effective alternative for overcoming this limitation. Bimetallic systems prepared by physically mixing ZVI and the catalyst or through reductive deposition of a catalyst onto ZVI have been shown to display superior performance over unmodified ZVI. Nonetheless, the efficiency and rate of hydrodechlorination of CPs by bimetals depend on the type of metal combinations used, properties of the metals and characteristics of the target CP. The presence and formation of various iron oxides can affect the reactivities of ZVI and bimetals. Oxides, such as green rust and magnetite, facilitate the dechlorination of CPs by ZVI and bimetals, while oxide films, such as hematite, maghemite, lepidocrocite and goethite, passivate the iron surface and hinder the dechlorination reaction. Key environmental parameters, such as solution pH, presence of dissolved oxygen and dissolved co-contaminants, exert significant impacts on the rate and extent of CP dechlorination by ZVI and bimetals.

      • Destination Image of Sri Lanka and Tourist Loyalty: Multidimensional Image Analysis of Sri Lanka

        H M R S S Gunawardana 한국문화관광학회 2015 문화관광연구 Vol.17 No.2

This study has been designed to explore the destination image of Sri Lankan in terms of cognitive and affective components and to measure its influence on tourist loyalty. Accordingly, extensive literature review along with interviews were conducted to identify the attributes specific to the Sri Lanka to measure the image component. Sample of 211 responses were taken to assess the image of Sri Lanka and thereby test the impact of image component on tourist loyalty towards Sri Lanka. Principle Component Analysis revealed four image component representing affective and cognitive components and they were regressed in loyalty showing influence of former components on tourist loyalty. In particularly, affective image has been identified as main component that influence on tourist loyalty and therefore marketers should focus their special attention to highlight this aspect of Sri Lanka to target market.

Thio and Nitrogen Analogues of Acronycine

Geewananda, Y.A.,Gunawardana, P.,Cordell, Geoffrey A. The Pharmaceutical Society of Korea 1995 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.18 No.3

The thio, thio acetyl, oxime, and several hydrazone and azine derivatives of the antitumor alkaloid acronycine (1) were prepared. NMR spectroscopy was used to study the configurations around the C=N double bond in these acronycine derivatives. In the hydrazones and azines of acronycine the N-N bond assumes a syn configuration to the $C_6-OCH_3$ group, while the NO bond in the oxime and the N-N bond in noracronycine hydrazone and azines assumes an anti configuration.

      • An experimental study for decentralized damage detection of beam structures using wireless sensor networks

        Jayawardhana, Madhuka,Zhu, Xinqun,Liyanapathirana, Ranjith,Gunawardana, Upul Techno-Press 2015 Structural monitoring and maintenance Vol.2 No.3

This paper addresses the issue of reliability and performance in wireless sensor networks (WSN) based structural health monitoring (SHM), particularly with decentralized damage identification techniques. Two decentralized damage identification algorithms, namely, the autoregressive (AR) model based damage index and the Wiener filter method are developed for structural damage detection. The ambient and impact testing have been carried out on the steel beam structure in the laboratory. Seven wireless sensors are installed evenly along the steel beam and seven wired sensor are also installed on the beam to monitor the dynamic responses as comparison. The results showed that wireless measurements performed very much similar to wired measurements in detecting and localizing damages in the steel beam. Therefore, apart from the usual advantages of cost effectiveness, manageability, modularity etc., wireless sensors can be considered a possible substitute for wired sensors in SHM systems.
