        Whereas with the Diesel Engine, emission reduction is the key challenge, with the Gasoline engine the improvement of fuel economy within attractive cost is the major development driver. The combination of cam phaser and variable charge motion is a very cost effective measure to reduce fuel consumption. Spray guided GDI systems provide a more significant step in fuel economy, however, are still limited by the lean exhaust gas after treatment both in terms of cost, worldwide application and real world fuel economy. Homogeneous GDI is most attractive in combination with turbo-charging and can be applied worldwide. With refined systems featuring double cam phaser, GDI and turbo-charging, an equivalent CO₂emission level to the Diesel engine at even better vehicle performance can be obtained. Whereas such fuel economy concepts will be introduced into the market quite soon, electro-hydraulical camless systems clearly outperform electromagnetic systems and are a very attractive long-term solution that combines excellent fuel economy with extremely low emission.
