Export Growth Dynamics and Real Exchange Rate: Evidence from Armenia

        Gor A. Khachatryan,Aleksandr Grigoryan 한국국제경제학회 2020 International Economic Journal Vol.34 No.3

In the light of recently revealed evidence that suggests a weaker impact of exchange rates on trade, this paper empirically studies the link between real exchange rate and exports in the context of a developing country, Armenia, using quarterly data from January 2001 to June 2019. In the course of this analysis, by performing a rolling regression, we confirm the evidence of a subdued impact of exchange rates on exports. We also investigate the effects of exchange rate volatility on exports for Armenia, where exchange rate risk is not generally hedged by exporting firms. Though dozens of studies have examined the effect of exchange rate fluctuations on international trade, the influence of exchange rate volatility is still ambiguous from empirical point of view. Our estimations indicate that short-term exchange rate volatility has no impact on exports. Finally, we study the dynamics of the prolonged overvaluation of exchange rates observed in the economy of Armenia since the early 2000s, which caused a continual deterioration in its external competitiveness. Using the instrumental variable–generalized method of moments (IV-GMM) framework, we estimate a two-stage model for the real effective exchange rate (REER) with endogenous remittances and find evidence of the Dutch disease in Armenia.

      • Control of compliant legged quadruped robots in the workspace

        Gor, M M,Pathak, P M,Samantaray, A K,Yang, J-M,Kwak, S W SAGE Publications 2015 Simulation Vol.91 No.2

Locomotion control of a quadruped robot requires a well-defined gait pattern (i.e., a coordinated actuation of its four legs in some particular fashion with respect to time). It is of practical importance to move the leg tips in a desired trajectory in order to achieve specific objectives such as to avoid obstacles, minimize energy consumption and locomotion time. Along with body displacement, body orientation is an equally important limit parameter during each leg step of the gait pattern. There are several possible gait patterns that maintain stable and aesthetically pleasing locomotion, and most of these are biologically inspired. This article presents quadruped locomotion control in the workspace through a novel control scheme in which the leg forward motion is controlled in the workspace while the body forward motion is controlled by providing the required effort directly to the joint actuators. In this control approach, the leg tip trajectory error drives a proportional-integral controller that is then transformed through the Jacobian to generate the corrective joint torques. For the body forward motion, leg motion is arrested and the joints are provided with opposite motion, which are controlled by a proportional-integral-derivative controller. The proposed method is simple and easy to implement in the workspace. The performance of the proposed control scheme is evaluated through simulations and animations.

      • Fault accommodation in compliant quadruped robot through a moving appendage mechanism

        Gor, M.M.,Pathak, P.M.,Samantaray, A.K.,Yang, J.-M.,Kwak, S.W. Elsevier 2018 Mechanism and machine theory Vol.121 No.-

Abstract

Quadruped robots provide better stability and speed in comparison to other legged robots. However, its joint actuator or sensor failure severely affects locomotion. Strategies for actuator and sensor fault accommodation in a compliant legged quadruped are presented here. A pair of orthogonally mounted moving appendages mechanism is proposed here to accommodate locked joint failure. These appendages as rack mounted inertias perform controlled motion during actuator failure. A strategy for sensor fault accommodation is also presented. A three-dimensional multi-body dynamics model of quadruped robot and its fault accommodation strategies are developed using bond graph modeling approach. The control performance is validated both through simulations and experiments.

Highlights

Locked-joint and sensor faults of a quadruped robot are detected and isolated.

Fault tolerant operation of a quadruped robot is considered for various missions.

Actuator faults are accommodated with controlled moving appendages.

Sensor fusion is used to reconstruct faulty sensor data.

Online system reconfiguration is validated using simulations and experiments.

Determination of the Process Parameters Relative Influence on kLa Value using Taguchi Design Methodology

Andreja GOR?EK,Marko TRAM?EK 한국공업화학회 2007 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.13 No.7

This article describes experimental determination of the relative impact of significant process parameters that influence volumetric oxygen mass transfer coefficient (kLa) using Taguchi design methodology. For this purpose an automated RC1 reaction calorimeter (Mettler-Toledo), which was originally developed for chemical processes, was modified for the bioprocesses. Simple fermentation using Baker’s yeast was studied to illustrate the design procedure. Orthogonal array L25 was selected for the proposed design and ANOVA method was used for recognizing the relative influence of the process parameters. Within the observed range of temperature (), fermentation media volume (VFM), and yeast mass concentration (γY), these process parameters were found to be unimportant compared to the volumetric air flow rate (qV,a) and rotational frequency of the stirrer (fm). The qV,a had a substantial effect on the kLa value (89.2 %) and the fm had just a small one (3.6 %), meanwhile the remain fraction to 100 % represents error. The results refer strictly to the selected case study. Anyhow, the proposed procedure shows that application of the Taguchi approach for analyzing the oxygen mass transfer based on the experimental data obtained from a highly-automated laboratory reactor appears to have potential usage in general biopharmaceutical process design.

New species of Hornera (Bryozoa, Cyclostomata) from Jeju Island (Korea)

Kamil Zágoršek,최현석,민범식,양호진,서지은 국립생물자원관 2017 Journal of species research Vol.6 No.3

The first occurrence of the genus Hornera (Bryozoa, Cyclostomata) is reported from waters around Jeju Island, Korean Peninsula. Hornera jeongsangi n. sp. differs from all known species of the genus Hornera in having very prominent spiny protrusions around the autozooidal apertures, which are not arranged in fascicles, the gonozooidal ooeciopore facing frontally and nonporous zooidal walls around the ooeciopore.

Analysis of Paddy Soil Chemical Properties and Rice Quality in Central Area (Sejong) in Korea

        Nag-Gor Choi,Jong-Hyun Park,Seong-Soo Kang 한국토양비료학회 2018 한국토양비료학회지 Vol.51 No.1

This study was carried out to review and compare crop cultivations upon chemical properties of paddy soil and qualitative characteristics of rice in Sejong-city from a point of view of farming extension to rice farmers and to utilize the result of the study as a basic guideline for precise agricultural practice. The pH in soils of Sejong was about 6.1-6.6 and had no difference with an average pH of paddy soils in Chung-Nam with pH 6.1. However, the average of organic matter, calcium (Ca) and available silicate in Sejong was lower than the average of them in Chung-Nam. The yields of rice were higher in 2010 than in 2011 and 2012, and the protein contents of rice were the highest in 2011 while the lowest water contents of rice in 2011. The protein contents upon regions were the highest in 2011 with 6.1%, and the amylose contents were the highest in Yeondong-myun, Jeoneu-myun, and Yeonseo-myun in 2010 while Kumnam-myun and Jeondong-myun were the highest in 2012. With the increase of precipitation, the protein content level in rice was increased while the amylose content level tended to decrease. Correlations between the chemical properties of paddy soil and the quality of rice and between level of organic matter in soil and amylose contents were negative (r = -0.507), and the correlation between the moisture contents and amylose contents (r = 0.419) and between the water contents and whiteness (r = 0.485) were positive. Because the quantity and quality of rice yield is determined by the soil characteristics, the consultation to farmers for the proactive soil analysis and for the maintenance of stable level of pH, organic matter and available silicate based on historical results of analysis is highly recommended. Also, the analysis on the effect of the weather and the soil characteristics affecting the quality and quantity of rice would be another good way.
