Cinnamon Plant Extract as Corrosion Inhibitor for Steel Used in Waste Water Treatment Plants and Its Biological Effect on Escherichia coli

        Fouda, Abd El-Aziz S.,Nazeer, Ahmed Abdel,El-Khateeb, Ayman Y.,Fakih, Mohamed Korean Chemical Society 2014 대한화학회지 Vol.58 No.4

The inhibition effect of cinnamon plant extract as a green corrosion inhibitor for steel in sulfide polluted salt water was studied by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM). The results showed that cinnamon plant extract in sulfide polluted salt water is a good corrosion inhibitor with inhibition efficiency reached to 80% at 250 ppm of the plant extract. The adsorption of cinnamon obeys Temkin adsorption isotherm, and acts as a mixed-type of inhibitor but dominantly as a cathodic inhibitor in sulfide polluted salt water.

Effect of Adding Physiotherapy Program to the Conservative Medical Therapy on Quality of Life and Pain in Chronic Rhinosinusitis Patients

        Fouda Khaled Z.,Eladl Hadaya M.,Ameer Mariam A.,Allam Nesma M. 대한재활의학회 2023 Annals of Rehabilitation Medicine Vol.47 No.5

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of combining physiotherapy techniques with conservative medical treatment in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) patients. Methods: Sixty-eight volunteers with CRS were randomly assigned. Group A received only traditional medical treatment, whereas group B received a physiotherapy program that included pulsed ultrasound therapy, sinus manual drainage techniques, and self-sinus massage technique in addition to traditional medical treatment. Interventions were applied 3 sessions a week for 4 weeks. The rhinosinusitis disability index (RSDI) served as the main outcome indicator for assessing the quality of life, and the secondary outcome measure was the pressure pain threshold (PPT) using a pressure algometer. Results: Wilcoxon signed rank test revealed a significant reduction (p<0.001) in total RSDI values from 71.08±1.13 pretest to 47.14±1.15 posttest for group A, while it decreased from 70.64±1.20 pretreatment to 31.76±1.04 posttreatment for group B; furthermore, Mann–Whitney U-test revealed a significant difference (p<0.001) in total RSDI values between both groups when comparing the change of the pre-post data values, it was 23.94±0.95 for group A and 38.88±0.67 for group B. The independent t-test revealed a highly statistically significant increase (p<0.001) in the PPT values in the experimental group compared to the control group. Conclusion: The physiotherapy program which included pulsed ultrasound therapy, sinus manual drainage technique, and self-sinus massage technique in conjunction with conventional medical treatment was more beneficial for enhancing the quality of life and PPT than traditional medical treatment alone in CRS patients.

Synthesis, Optimization, and Characterization of Cellulase Enzyme Obtained from Thermotolerant Bacillus subtilis F3: An Insight into Cotton Fabric Polishing Activity

        Fouda Amr,Alshallash Khalid S.,Atta Hossam M.,El Gamal Mamdouh S.,Bakry Mohamed M.,Alawam Abdullah S.,Salem Salem S. 한국미생물·생명공학회 2024 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.34 No.1

The efficacy of 40 bacterial isolates obtained from hot spring water samples to produce cellulase enzymes was investigated. As a result, the strain Bacillus subtilis F3, which was identified using traditional and molecular methods, was selected as the most potent for cellulase production. Optimization was carried out using one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) and BOX-Behnken Design to detect the best conditions for the highest cellulase activity. This was accomplished after an incubation period of 24 h at 45o C and pH 8, with an inoculum size of 1% (v/v), 5 g/l of peptone as nitrogen source, and 7.5 g/l of CMC. Moreover, the best concentration of ammonium sulfate for cellulase enzyme precipitation was 60% followed by purification using a dialysis bag and Sephadex G-100 column chromatography to collect the purified enzyme. The purified cellulase enzyme was characterized by 5.39-fold enrichment, with a specific activity of 54.20 U/mg and a molecular weight of 439 kDa. There were 15 amino acids involved in the purified cellulase, with high concentrations of 160 and 100 mg/l for glycine and proline respectively. The highest stability and activity of the purified cellulase was attained at pH 7 and 50o C in the presence of 150 ppm of CaCl2, NaCl, and ZnO metal ions. Finally, the biopolishing activity of the cellulase enzyme, as indicated by weight loss percentages of the cotton fabric, was dependent on concentration and treatment time. Overall, the thermotolerant B. subtilis F3 strain has the potential to provide highly stable and highly active cellulase enzyme for use in biopolishing of cotton fabrics.

Role of Some Benzohydrazide Derivatives as Corrosion Inhibitors for Carbon Steel in HCl Solution

Fouda, A.S.,Mohamed, M.T.,Soltan, M.R. The Korean Electrochemical Society 2013 Journal of electrochemical science and technology Vol.4 No.2

Corrosion inhibition of carbon steel in 2M HCl by some benzohydrazide derivatives (I-III) was studied using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques at $30^{\circ}C$. Polarization studies showed that all the investigated compounds are of mixed type inhibitors. Temperature studies revealed a decrease in efficiency with rise in temperature and corrosion activation energies increased in the presence of the hydrazide derivatives, probably implying that physical adsorption of cationic species may be responsible for the observed inhibition behavior. Electrochemical impedance studies showed that the presence of benzohydrazide derivatives decreases the double layer capacitance and increases the charge transfer resistance. The adsorption of these compounds on carbon steel surface was found to obey Temkin's adsorption isotherm. Synergistic effects increased the inhibition efficiency in the presence of halide additives namely KI and KBr. An inhibition mechanism was proposed in terms of strongly adsorption of inhibitor molecules on carbon steel surface.

Electrochemical Adsorption Properties and Inhibition of Zinc Corrosion by Two Chromones in Sulfuric Acid Solutions

        Fouda, Abd El-Aziz S.,Nazeer, Ahmed Abdel,Saber, Ahmed Korean Chemical Society 2014 대한화학회지 Vol.58 No.2

The electrochemical behavior and corrosion inhibition of zinc in 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ in the absence and presence of some chromones has been investigated using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM) techniques. The presence of these investigated compounds in the corrosive solutions decrease the weight loss, the corrosion current density, and double layer capacitance but increases the charge transfer resistance. Polarization studies were carried out at room temperature, and showed that all the studied compounds act as mixed type inhibitors with a slight predominance of cathodic character. The effect of temperature on corrosion inhibition has been studied and the thermodynamic activation and adsorption parameters were determined and discussed. The adsorption of the investigated compounds on zinc was found to obey Langmuir adsorption isotherm.

Effect of β-Blocker Inhibitors on Aluminum Corrosion

        Fouda, A. S.,El-Ewady, G. Y.,Shalabi, K. Korean Chemical Society 2011 대한화학회지 Vol.55 No.2

Corrosion of aluminum in 0.1 M HCl solution in the absence and presence of ${\beta}$-blocker inhibitors (atenolol, propranolol, timolol and nadolol) was investigated using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. The inhibition efficiency increased with inhibitor concentration and decreased with rise of temperature. Potentiodynamic polarization curves revealed that they acted as cathodic inhibitors. Some thermodynamic parameters were calculated and discussed. All inhibitors were adsorbed on Al surface obeying Frumkin isotherm. All EIS tests exhibited one capacitive loop which indicates that the corrosion reaction is controlled by charge transfer process. The inhibition efficiencies of all test methods were in good agreement.

Lornoxicam & Tenoxicam Drugs as Green Corrosion Inhibitors for Carbon Steel in 1 M H2SO4 Solution

Fouda, A.S.,El-Defrawy, A.M.,El-Sherbeni, M.W. The Korean Electrochemical Society 2013 Journal of electrochemical science and technology Vol.4 No.2

Inhibition performance of Lornoxicam & Tenoxicam against corrosion of carbon steel in 1M $H_2SO_4$ solutions was investigated by weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The inhibition efficiency increased with increasing inhibitor's concentration, but decreased with increase in temperature. Potentiodynamic polarization curves showed that, the inhibitors were of mixed type. The apparent activation energy ($E^*_a$) and other thermodynamic parameters for the corrosion process have also been calculated and discussed. The inhibition of carbon steel corrosion is due to the adsorption of the inhibitor molecules on the surface, which follows Temkin adsorption isotherm. The mechanism of inhibition was discussed in the light of the chemical structure of the undertaken inhibitors.

Extract of Camellia sinensis as Green Inhibitor for the Corrosion of Mild Steel in Aqueous Solution

        Fouda, Abd El-Aziz S.,Mekkia, Dina,Badr, Abeer H. Korean Chemical Society 2013 대한화학회지 Vol.57 No.2

Corrosion inhibition of mild steel used in water station in 35 ppm aluminum sulfate and 10 ppm chloride solution by Camellia sinensis leaves extract was studied using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques at $30^{\circ}C$. Results show that the inhibition efficiency increases with increasing concentration of the extract and decreases with increasing temperature. Inhibitive effect was afforded by adsorption of the extract's components which was found to accord with Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Inhibition mechanism is deduced from the temperature dependence of the inhibition efficiency and was further corroborated by the values of activation parameters obtained from the experimental data.

Aqueous Extract of Coriander Seeds as Green Corrosion Inhibitor for 304 Stainless Steel in Hydrochloric Acid Solutions

        Fouda, Abd El-Aziz. S.,Rashwan, Salah M.,Abo-Mosallam, Hytham A. Korean Chemical Society 2014 대한화학회지 Vol.58 No.1

Corrosion inhibition of 304 stainless steel (SS) in 1 M HCl by aqueous extract of coriander seeds was studied using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM) techniques. Values of inhibition efficiency obtained are dependent upon the concentration of extract and temperature. Generally, inhibition was found to increase with inhibitor concentration, but decrease with temperature. Physical adsorption mechanism has been proposed for the inhibition with Langmuir adsorption isotherm obeyed. Values of activation energy of the inhibited corrosion reaction of 304 SS are greater than the value obtained for the blank. Thermodynamic consideration reveals that adsorption of aqueous extract of coriander seeds 304 SS surface is spontaneous.

Role of Some Phenylthiourea Derivatives as Corrosion Inhibitors for Carbon Steel in HCl Solution

        Fouda, Abd El-Aziz El-Sayed,Hussein, Ahmed Korean Chemical Society 2012 대한화학회지 Vol.56 No.2

Five derivatives of phenylthiourea namely: 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-phenylthiourea (1), 1-(4-methylphenyl)-3- phenylthiourea (2), 1-(4-bromophenyl)-3-phenylthiourea (3), 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-phenylthiourea (4) and 1-phenylthiourea (5) have been evaluated as new inhibitors for the corrosion of carbon steel in 2 M HCl solution using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements showed that these derivatives are mixed-type inhibitors. The inhibition efficiency was found to increase with inhibitor concentration and decreases with rise in temperature. The thermodynamic parameters of adsorption and activation were determined and discussed. Nyquist plots showed depressed semicircles with their centre below real axis. The adsorption process of studied derivatives on carbon steel surface obeys Temkin adsorption isotherm. The synergistic effect of these derivatives and some anions is discussed from the viewpoint of adsorption models. The electrochemical results are in good agreement with the calculated quantum chemical HOMO and LUMO energies of the tested molecules.
