Electrodegradation of tetracycline using stainless steel net electrodes: Screening of main effective parameters and interactions by means of a two-level factorial design

        Maryam Foroughi,Hamid Reza Soheil Arezoomand,Ali Reza Rahmani,Ghorban Asgari,Davood Nematollahi,Kaan Yetilmezsoy,Mohammad Reza Samarghandi 한국화학공학회 2017 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.34 No.11

Performance of electrodegradation process using stainless steel net electrodes was explored for removal of tetracycline (TC) from synthetic wastewater in a laboratory batch study. Main effects of various operating parameters, such as initial TC concentration (20 and 100mg/L), reaction pH (3.0 and 9.0), current density (4.1 and 17.1mA/cm2), agitation speed (250 and 750 rpm), and electrolysis time (20, 50, and 80 min), and their interactions on the TC removal efficiency, were optimized by means of a five-factor and two-level factorial experimental design methodology. The significance of responses obtained from the proposed design (sixteen experimental runs under batch mode conditions) was statistically evaluated by preparing a Pareto chart, half-normal probability plot, and plots of main effects and their interactions (herein referred to as Factions) within the framework of the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The statistical results corroborated with 95% certainty that TC concentration, pH, and current density showed the largest effects (absolute values) on the TC removal efficiency. Besides the most effective Factions, a sodium sulfate (used as supporting electrolyte) dose of 1 g/200 cc was determined as the optimum value for the studied process. Under the conditions of an initial TC concentration=20 mg/L, a reaction pH=3.0, current density=17.1mA/cm2, an agitation speed=250 rpm, and an electrolysis time=20min, about 70% of TC could be successfully removed from the simulated wastewater. Findings of this experimental study clearly confirmed the applicability of the electrodegradation process for the removal of a broad spectrum antibacterial agent like TC, and also demonstrated the effectiveness of the factorial design methodology before transferring the obtained experimental knowledge for a full-scale facility.

      • A Study of Asymmetrical Decision Support in Computerized Negotiation Support Systems (NSS)

        Abbas Foroughi,William C. Perkins,James C. Hershauer People&Global Business Association 2015 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.20 No.1

This study examines an issue not considered to date by previous NSS studies―asymmetrical decision support in negotiating pairs. In this laboratory study, all buyer‐seller bargaining pairs communicate electronically but access to the custom‐built DSS is varied, with the goal of determining the impact of decision support asymmetry on decision outcomes and negotiator attitudes. The authors find that, especially in low conflict treatments, DSS support helps negotiators achieve higher joint outcomes even if only one participant has a DSS. The results also provide evidence for the argument that the DSS component in an NSS permits higher joint outcomes and more balanced contracts, while the electronic communication component impacts positively on negotiator attitudes.

Characterization of flow properties of pharmaceutical pellets in draft tube conical spout-fluid beds

Mohammad Foroughi-Dahr,Rahmat Sotudeh-Gharebagh,Navid Mostoufi 한국공업화학회 2018 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.68 No.-

Experimental studies of the hydrodynamic performance of the draft tube conical spout-fluid bed (DCSF) were conducted using pharmaceutical pellets. The experiments were carried out in a DCSF consisted of two sections: (a) a conical section with the cross section of 120 mm × 250 mm and the height of 270 mm, (b) a cylindrical section with the diameter of 250 mm and the height of 600 mm. The flow characteristics of solids were investigated with a high speed camera and a pezoresistive absolute pressure transducer simultaneously. These characteristics revealed different flow regimes in the DCSF: packed bed at low gas velocities, fluidized bed in draft tube at higher gas velocities until minimum spouting, and spouted bed. The stable spouting was identified by the presence of two dominant frequencies of the power spectrum density of pressure fluctuation signature: (i) the frequency band 6–9 Hz and (ii) the frequency band 12–15 Hz. The pressure drops across the draft tube as well as the annulus measured in order to better recognize the flow structure in the DCSF. It was observed that the pressure drop across the draft tube, the pressure drop across the annulus, and the minimum spouting velocity increase with the increase in the height of draft tube and distance of the entrainment zone, but with the decrease in the distributor hole pitch. Finally, this study provided novel insight into the hydrodynamic of DCSF, particularly minimum spouting and stable spouting in the DCSF which contains valuable information for process design and scale-up of spouted bed equipment.

Strategies to Increase Exercise Compliance and Adherence for Breast Cancer Survivors: A Descriptive Review.

Paul Yang,Nasim Foroughi,Sharon Kilbreath 국제물리치료학회 2010 Journal of International Academy of Physical Ther Vol.1 No.2

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer primarily affecting women and negatively impacting the individuals, families, and the health care system. Despite the well-known benefits of exercise for breast cancer survivors, rate of physical activity declines during adjuvant therapy and may not return to pre-diagnosis levels. In addition, low levels of adherence to exercise have been observed in this cohort. The challenge is to identify strategies that are effective in promoting exercise adherence. Several of the studies use social cognitive theory as a theoretical framework to design exercise interventions that encourage adherence. Within and without this framework, they have implemented interventions within the home and gym-based environments. Strategies used to encourage adherence to exercise programs and which are readily implemented in most situations have included distribution of print materials and pedometers, as well as recommendation from the oncologist. Other strategies that may be less feasible have included provision of trainers, gym memberships, regular phone-calls, and psychologist-lead stress management sessions.

Investigating the Relationship of Sustainability Factors with Project Management Success

Khalilzadeh, Mohammad,Akbari, Hassan,Foroughi, Amin Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers 2016 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.15 No.4

One of the main concerns of the present age, is attending to the issue of sustainability that in recent decades, the concept of it has grown in terms of recognition and importance. Sustainability have defined further the development of the welfare and living standards of the present generation, without the lives of future generations is at stake. One of these tasks of the business is project management and today, "green or sustainable project management" as one of the most important global trends of project management have been identified. The issue of present study was to investigate the relationship of sustainability factors with success of a project. The population of the research consists of directors of oil and gas in the South Pars region including 150 people that according to Cochran formula, the number of samples were obtained 108 people. In this study, data collection was conducted based on a structured questionnaire that from a sample set of questions was used for sustainability impact on 6 scale of project management success. For this purpose, the whole five-item Likert has been used. Also for statistical analysis, PLS software was used. The results of path analysis at confidence level of 95%, showed a significant relationship exists between "sustainability factor" and "project success criteria." Since the correlation coefficient is positive, so this type of relationship is positive. Thus all the hypotheses at confidence level of 95 percent was confirmed and it became clear that there is a significant positive relationship between "sustainability factors" and "project success criteria."

      • A novel approach for optimal DG allocation in distribution network for minimizing voltage sag

        Hashemian, Pejman,Nematollahi, Amin Foroughi,Vahidi, Behrooz Techno-Press 2019 Advances in energy research Vol.6 No.1

The cost incurred by voltage sag effect in power networks has always been of important concern for discussions. Due to the environmental constraints, fossil fuel shortage crisis and low efficiency of conventional power plants, decentralized generation and renewable based DG have become trends in recent decades; because DGs can reduce the voltage sag effect in distribution networks noticeably; therefore, optimum allocation of DGs in order to maximize their effectiveness is highly important in order to maximize their effectiveness. In this paper, a new method is proposed for calculating the cost incurred by voltage sag effect in power networks. Thus, a new objective function is provided that comprehends technical standards as minimization of the cost incurred by voltage sag effect, active power losses and economic criterion as the installation and maintenance costs of DGs. Considering operational constraints of the system, the optimum allocation of DGs is a constrained optimization problem in which Lightning Attachment procedure optimization (LAPO) is used to resolve it and is the optimum number, size and location of DGs are determined in IEEE 33 bus test system and IEEE 34 bus test system. The results show that optimum allocation of DGs not only reduces the cost incurred by voltage sag effect, but also improves the other characteristics of the system.

Investigation of Polypyrrole Coatings Containing Nanosized Metal Oxides for Corrosion Protection of AA2024 Al Alloy

Fekri, F.,Shahidi, M.,Foroughi, M.M.,Kazemipour, M. The Korean Electrochemical Society 2019 Journal of electrochemical science and technology Vol.10 No.2

The corrosion protection of AA2024 PPy coated samples doping with nanosized metal oxides, including $TiO_2$ and $CeO_2$ nanoparticles and $Nd_2O_3$ nanorods, during exposure to the solutions of 0.1 M $H_2SO_4$ and 3.5% NaCl was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) techniques. The nanorods of $Nd_2O_3$ were synthesized by cathodic pulse electrochemical deposition technique. The barrier properties of the different PPy coatings containing nanosized metal oxides immersed in $H_2SO_4$ solution were ranked as follows: $Nd_2O_3$ > $TiO_2$ > $CeO_2$. Therefore, the $Nd_2O_3$ coating sample provided the highest corrosion protection at any time of immersion up to 72 hours after immersing in $H_2SO_4$ solution. On the other hand, the $CeO_2$ coating sample displayed the best anticorrosive properties among the other coating samples after immersion in NaCl solution up to 28 days. This is due to the inhibition effect of cerium ions on aluminum alloys at near-neutral solutions.
