Ford, Ford Madox 성균관대학교 번역·TESOL대학원 2020 국내석사
The Brown Owl is a fairy story written by the famous British author, Ford Madox Ford in 1892 at the age of eighteen. This story is one of his less known, earlier works making it valuable to translate to Korean readers. In addition, the characteristics of the protagonist, Princess Ismara, deviates from the typical archetype of princesses in literature. She is not just beautiful and naive, but brave, independent, and strategic although she displays mixed dispositions between weakness and valor in the story. The source text, written for British readers in the late 19th century, was translated for Korean readers in the early 21st century. The key to solving the inherent differences between time and culture was the belief that “the master of literary work is the reader.” Although the translation aimed to preserve the cultural contexts present in the original text, on rare occasions it became an obstacle interfering with the reader’s connection towards the text. Therefore, the parts that obstructed the reader from relating to the text were replaced with the closest ‘equivalent’ expressions. For example, the expression in the original text, “to prove the moon was made of blue cheese,” was replaced with “to prove the rabbit lives on the moon” to enhance the readability. This translation work does not limit itself to one strategy, but rather demonstrates the combined utilization of both strategies innately present in the domestication vs. foreignization dichotomy debate. Therefore, it emphasizes the main purpose of literature, whether original or translated, it must exist for the readers.
